So the installation is 99% done. I just need to paint two areas I chose not to have covered, one in the foot well, and the seatbelt tower rear, due to wear concerns, which I'll do tomorrow. The carpet will be replaced with a black one as soon as I source a full-loop RHD black carpet, which I think I will have in hand in spring. I don't usually use my Gmail photo account, but will try this time: https://plus.google.com/photos/118121605272897436502/albums/6075132699507620545

Stunning. A one of a kind unique interior. If I am not mistaken, you have a built motor as well. That makes sitting in that plush cockpit an even better experience. Congrats on creating such a special roadster.

Thank you, and yes, I've the 2.0 high-comp stroker. In the suspension department there're the V8R control arms, Kiesler drop spindles, FM rail braces, butterfly brace and AFCO shocks. The AFCOs are going to go, however, in favor of some Xidas. Wilwood calipers/DBA rotors on all four corners provide plenty of thermal capacity for stopping, and drop weight. Little by little I'm nearing completion.

This is insane. It's so incredibly over the top but yet it all works so well.

How do you like having the radio so far away? I did something similar in an old car and it grew old pretty quick always reaching over. I'm guessing this doesn't see daily duty...

Just get the Pandora or heart radio phone app and then your radio station controls are in your hand.

That model has a small remote I keep in the center console but so far I've not needed it. I don't futz around with audio too much; my playlists are set ahead of time. Regardless, though, the trade off was worth it to me.

I want to thank PFunk for allowing me to be a small part of this impressive build. To have my parts be in the same company with Nakamae, and installed by RS Aizawa is a miata owner's dream come true. [fan boy mode on] I'm still stoked that the RS Aizawa guys handled my parts!! how cool is that?! wait..that came out wrong… :D
I'm happy to see the final product, and it has lit a fire under me to finish my own NB build. :thumbs-up

WOW, I am really out of words for this one! The interior looks perfect! Such an inspiration! I have to admit that I will shamelessly copy some of your features in my interior!

P.S. Does anyone know if RetroModern makes/will make the "tombstone" stainless part available?

Absolutely stunning! Pfunk - I'm coming to Tokyo in September and wondering if you can point me to any stores that would carry Nakamae products? I'm looking to pick-up some interior pieces but also specifically want to try sitting in one of their Type R seats to see if I fit :). Would love any pointers you have on stores I should check out. Thanks!

Both, actually, though I am out of the classroom as of this year.

I've never seen any Nakamae gear in stores here, actually. I drove down to Osaka to meet him when he agreed to do all the work I wanted, and then he sent all the finished pieces up to RS Aizawa to install for me. Even at RS A's shop there isn't much kicking around. Nakamae san is in his 60s now and has been making retirement noises for a while. It seems that he mostly takes on bigger custom jobs these days, though he does still make smaller bits. I know he's neck-deep in a full custom NA build now, all tan leather interior for a Ferrari-red NA the RS A boys are building for a customer.

Is he still making parts? He'd told me when he finished my stuff that he was getting out of the parts business...

Thanks Pfunk, appreciated. Can only dream of having a full custom build on my NA(s) with Nakamae and RS A, your NB is inspiring! Pity SoCal is so far away. Is there any way for a gaijin to contact him to find out what might still be possible? Rumblings of his retirement don't bode well for my project!

Would be great too if you could let me know if you have any thoughts on shops in Tokyo that would be worth visiting when I'm over next month.

He prefers seeing the car and person he's going to work with in person; that said, if you've an intriguing build planned and cash in hand, he might take it on. Prepare yourself, however, as a full custom interior costs north of $10KUSD. If you're going for "the look" but think that kind of money is silly, and plenty of people (most, even?) do, so no judgement here, you'd do better to hit up some of the knockoff shops out of China. If you're set on Nakamae, are ready to do a cash wire (50% up front, balance prior to shipping), and can be patient as he makes it all (sometimes takes a year in all), post here exactly what you want and I can talk with RSA. You'd have to have color drawings and the like ready to go.

Pfunk
08-21-2015, 02:54 PM
Another thought: surely there must be a badass custom shop in SoCal who could do everything you want, to any style??

Pfunk
08-21-2015, 03:02 PM
As for Tokyo shops, there is Car Make Corns (東京都江戸川区 西瑞江4-1-1), in Chiba there's RE Amemiya (千葉県富里市七栄439-10), in Saitama there's Garage Vary (埼玉県和光市下新倉5-18-21), and in Kanagawa there's RS Aizawa (神奈川県座間市栗原中央4-16-58). You'll want to hire a car to hit all these, though!

Pfunk if you don't mind me asking, I believe that some of your (now brown) interior trim is left in plastic, right? If yes, what did you/Nakamae used to dye/paint the plastic? How do you find them holding up?

Pfunk
08-27-2015, 04:13 PM
There are two sections that are plastic still, and all the trim buttons, of course. They were painted by RS Aizawa but I don't know what type of dye/paint they used, honestly. They're holding up quite well. It's been a while since I've been to visit RSA but if I remember the next time I'm out there I will ask,.

I doubt he intends on stopping, but at some point he'll have to...
