Will upgrading my radiator cap to a higher psi/bar rating, without replacing any hoses, make the engine more likely to spring a coolant leak or burst a hose?

Are you upgrading from a 1.1 bar (16 PSI) to 1.3 (18.8) bar cap? I have done this swap without any problems with moderately aged hoses............

Yes, that would be the plan. I was surprised when I first read that my cap wasn't 0.9 bar, since that's what my 1.8 had. Although either could have been an autozone cap, I do know my current 1.1 says Calsonic somewhere in small letters, jdm yo.

I used a 1.3 for several years without issue. The higher the psi rating the more is suppresses the boiling point of the coolant/water. So yes it will actually put more pressure on your stock hoses. Will it cause them to burst, doubtful. When they are at that point then then needed to be changed regardless.

just my .02 cents
