View Full Version : LE leather kit for 1995 Limited Edition Seats

Ok let me start by saying thank you to "Martin" for leading the way on this with his NB recovered seats with LE red leather that he ordered custom made by "www.interior-innovations.com" So I did contact them and sent them my original worn out 1995 Limited Seat covers that I painstakingly removed from the seats to be used as pattern thus getting some discount from the set. Remember to be very patient with the company as the covers are made in Pakistan. It took them 8 months to send me my set. It is also very difficult to contact them by phone. They responded thru email. Anyways if you do order just be patient and you will be rewarded with a beautiful red/maroon LE seat cover. Just like this one..........(initial test fit BTW)

Pakistan?? Eight months?? Goat??

But for a fraction of the price of the stateside company that makes LE cover for this seats. The color of the leather they use is very similar to the OEM. The pics does not do justice. But for the price they can't be beat at least for now.

They look great but 8 months is a long time for seat cover. However I cannot say much as I waited 8 months for my Nakamae seats from japan. And I have ordered plenty more from japan that takes a while.

I had my M seats covered in black leather with perforated leather inserts. Took about a week and cost $600. The rear of the seats was matching black vinyl.

What was the cost if you don't mind me asking?

I believe they charges $385 shipped for genuine leather like this one. Mine was discounted due to the seat covers I have to send them for pattern making. This set is full leather including the back and lower sides. The only vinyl is the inside lining. It may take a bit faster now since they already have created a set.

If you're close to Mendocino, CA. I know of a set selling for around $150. Intact foam and perfect for a recovering project.

I went through the pictures in your photobucket links, and saw one of the cars I softly renovated years ago, with the interior picture showing my red seats and mostly red interior. I'm glad you did the homework to get someone else to commit to the '95 M edition patterned seats. Leatherseats.com can provide the same pattern, or with different custom requests, such as perforations, multicolors, different stitching, etc. I hope the company you found is reliable because the cost is roughly 30% considering the amount of leather you describe. Keep us posted as to viability, ok?

I hear that wearing on the seats in a storage room is pretty uncommon though :teehee:

I understand about the concern but I did check around regarding the reliability of Interior-Innovations prior to sending them the funds and they are registered and had no issues with any of the card services including paypal. They probably can take custom orders i.e perforations, stitching and color choices. The leather they used on my set is definitely a "top-grain" as compare to the one used by leatherseats.com which is a 'full-grain" and thereby more expensive. Even the OEM leather used was top-grain. Had this company base in the US, we will not see prices as low as this. But make no mistake the quality of finish on these sets can't be justified by the pics. I am not taking away the quality of other companies that make our seat covers but their prices are just prohibitive IMO. And in this case l think lesser price does not mean inferior. As to color match with our aging LE cars judge for yourself if their leather is not close enough. The swatch you see is the "ecstacy cobalt red", one that is being used by leatherseat.com

6 days? Awesome so they have resolve their production problem. I wish I knew about that perforated leather. Well I am recovering my regular 93 seats so I will order a perforated one hopefully he has it on the maroon color.

Leatherseat.com price of $1400 was beyond common sense IMO that is why they never move much. If they stayed between $800-900 they could have kept the demand. Plus the fact that there was not much 95 Limited Edition seats and the available ones I saw needs to have new foams to begin with, the total cost of the project is a killer.

BTW the bottom part could be a pain to install so use a little steam (I used a bit of hair dryer heat) to soften the leather and foam. Enjoy the install. G/L

FYI the 93 LE "OEM red" is called "burgundy/maroon at interior-innovations. Just to clarify as they also have red on their drop down color choices.

$445 is definitely cheap.

How can leatherseat.com end production when everything they do is made to order. That sounds silly to me. If they can't make a set for a pattern they already have what can they produce then? Just wondering.

This is what they said

Thanks for your call and email regarding your 1995 Mazda Miata M Edition. Unfortunately we have discontinued this pattern recently due to low sales volume for the 95 M-Edition with Low-Back buckets, so I no longer have anything available for this vehicle. I'm very sorry about that. My only suggestion would be to visit with your local automotive upholstery shop.

You may want to double check that the headrest receivers are black, and note that there are two different part numbers because they are slightly different, one has a small spring for the detent in the metal headrest bar. The black ones are not easy for American Mazda dealers to get, or it may be cost prohibitive. If so, IL Motorsports may be able to get them since the black ones were available for the black cloth two piece seats available in Europe and Japan. I got mine through Rosenthal Mazda 8 years ago or so when I put together the group buy at leatherseats.com for the M-edition seats. My seats have been in many different cars by now, the red leather looks great with almost any offset color. I'm sorry that leatherseats no longer wants to make them, but am glad another source was found. Mine are full leather, with black factory plastic, and look great. I was seriously considering selling them, but I'm torn. I went so far as to put them in the classifieds at another website, and even though I had an interested party, I decided to keep them. I'll see, I may want to get another Miata eventually, probably, ahhh, who knows.

I received mine today (took about 10 days to receive). One question: I don't see any provisions for hog rings/zip-ties. There are no holes on the outside and for the inside there is a rigid plastic strip where the hog rings will attach to the foam. There are also no holes for the headrests.
Am I supposed to cut the holes myself?

If you use hog rings, the wire rings will cut thru as you press them with the hog pliers. But if you use zip-ties then you will have to punch/poke a hole right behind the plastic strip so you can insert the zip-ties. I used the tip of a small knife and poked a nice cut the size of the zip-tie. Be careful to not over cut more than you need. A small ice pick would do too.

As for the head rest it's the same. Once you place the cover feel for the two holes and then punch a hole thru it. I used an ice pick then I carefully increased the holes with a small but very sharp scissors. Nothing fancy. Just enough for the head rest posts guides to go thru. Just make certain you find the right spots. I know it felt weird to cut a nice piece of work.

Now the hardest cut would be for the seat belt attachment on the side. "Only if you are using NA8 seat belts". If you use NA6 then no need to cut out. It's a small metal tongue that has a screw hole found on the side of the bottom part of the seat. I found it a tricky as these pieces are bent (like "Y) so first I placed the bottom cover with out tying them up then I pencil mark the spots where I need to cut (about half an inch cut). Then I first inserted the side where the cuts are thru the tongues as these pieces protrudes out. Only then I fully placed the cover. Now, you have to take time and use some kind of heat (I used hair dryer)to make sure that the leather cover is warm (professionals uses steam) so you can stretch it over the seat. It's a little challenging so "TAKE YOUR TIME". Also warm up the foam as this will make it easier to press down. Again it is not a one motion move as you will tear the leather or the stitches so do not rush. Once you encounter tight spots leave the cover on that position and warm up that tight spot and also the other side that had already been placed. Here is the pic of it installed. Also, look at the small spot that I over stretched without properly warming the leather so heed my warning. I learned very quickly as there are several tight spots. This the sign of a properly fitted kit. So thank you Khalid. G/L

I received the headrest bezels from MX5UK. Since I didn't know what each part was, I ordered four of each. So when I'm done building the seats I should have an extra set. The part numbers I ordered are:

J001-88-148A 02 which is the non-latching guide
J001-88-147A 02 which is the latching guide

Hi Jason

Do you have an extra set still?
