The 2016 MX-5 Miata’s story is all about thrifty performance. It’s priced affordably—starting a smidge below $26,000—and its tidy size and diminutive weight make it a sprightly performer and bring another benefit to boot: The EPA just confirmed that the 2016 MX-5 is capable of up to 36 mpg on the highway.

The full numbers shake out as follows: With a six-speed manual, the EPA rates the 2016 at 27 mpg city, 34 highway, 30 combined. The automatic version (also a six-speed) gets 2 more mpg on the highway but is rated identically for city and combined mileage.

As the EPA’s comparison chart points out, that’s a sizable bump in economy over the outgoing NC Miata, which mustered only 28 mpg highway in both manual and automatic guise. We loved the NC, but we’ll never complain about a car getting lighter, smaller, and more efficient. Especially when it has three pedals and a droptop. Viva Miata!
