Saw there was interest in some Zoom Engineering products. So in case new folks are not aware of Zoom Engineering they have been around since the 80's, maybe longer. The owner makes lots of products for Miata including; bodykits, exhausts, Side Mirrors, Rear View Mirrors, Vintage Lights, Leather Goods, Shift Knobs, and even some very cool A/C Vent Drink holders that keep your drinks cold.

The above photo is just one his Roadsters, he has several. Including a very nice BRG.

Koga-san is the owner and can generally be found every year selling his parts at the annual Karuizawa Meeting in Japan

If you guys are looking for high quality parts this gentleman makes some of the best quality parts around. They might be expensive for some, however owners that have his parts installed will surely let you know how happy they are with what they have.

I have the cf side mirrors and love them! :drinkto: Bought them thru Rod (Tetsuya Garage). Although they have smaller mirror areas, the convex tinted glass really makes for great visibility and they look AMAZING to boot!

some of his best known products are all of the different Mirror Options.

For you guys that have the 1994 and later Miata with the mirror attached to the glass, you just need a window mounted arm like this.

Then you can just pick your mirror and it screws right on !!

If you park your car outside on a windy/rainy day, does it collect leaves, rain, dirt etc? Is it difficult to clean it?

It actually has a drain hole that lines up with the stock drain tube that the car has. So, water collection is not an issue. Yes, it can collect leaves but its easy to scoop it out. And also true that it needs some elbow grease to keep it as shiny as it can be. But mine sleeps in the garage :-)

To save some money, I generally order a bunch of stuff from one vendor, like http://www.MiataRoadster.com, http://www.TetsuyaGarage.com or http://www.REV9Autosport.com and have them pack it all in a huge box and pay one shipping price vs piece mail, just my 0.02 cents.

Yes. You can Slampen. Rakuten is a huge site. It just turna out that Zoom has a store in there. It has many pages of stuff. Both for cars and motorcycles. But a big emphasis on interior parts. Mirrors variations, etc. Only thing that is a challenge is the japanese everything. But that is expected. They do offer great service and prices

I've wondered the same thing about the Monaco (only read one review from an NA owner that originally bought the 203 but exchanged it for a 240 and was happier). Given it's asymmetrical, also wondering if it's specifically designed/ shaped for a RHD car.. anyone know?

Well thanks to Randy aka Phatmiata and Corey aka Corifto making me aware of Rakuten i went ahead and bought a Zoom Engineering fuel lid, Zoom Engineering TS carbon fiber rear view mirror and Zoom G1 mirror arm from Zoom Engineering's store, so I'm very excited! :frantic:

I thank you but my wallet does not! :fp: Thankfully my wife liked the fuel lid because she said she never liked my current one, Runabout Type II, so that will be up for sale soon. She also noticed the cf rear mirror "looks like" the side mirrors so even a non enthusiast can make the connection. :) So Warbird will have Zoom-Zoom-Zoom, soon. :drinkto:

Edit: Plans for other Zoom parts is already formulating in my "sick, twisted mind". :slayer:

Congrats Greasemonkey! I ordered the fuel lid and CF side mirrors (after you helped me confirm I'd be happier with the longer passenger side arm ). The process was fast, just keep an eye out for their order confirmation back that you have to reply to. I haven't ordered the matching rear view as I'm still undecided between TS and Aero (I like the Monaco but I believe it's asymmetrical for RHD only). It's not just measuring vs stock for size because of the wide angle glass. Looking forward to hearing your first hand report. Which one did you go with?

When I confirmed my order for the fuel lid, they emailed me and asked if this was intentionally a duplicate order for the same address. Turns our Mrs. R had picked up on me really wanting one and snuck in an early Xmas order. Was super impressed they saved us the disappointment of receiving two!

Greasemonkey2000

Look forward to see your Zoom parts installed! :)

I bought the TS carbon fiber rear view mirror because it is the widest at 256mm/10" of the Zoom mirrors followed by the Monaco 240 at 240mm/9.4", Aero at 205mm/8.1", Monaco 203 at 203mm/8", Little mirror at 155mm/6.1" and Compact Room mirror at 136mm/5.4".

I still want a Zoom tombstone if i go NA6 dash and Zoom center console and might get a brand new set of Zoom cf side mirrors.

I have a question for all you Zoom Engineering fuel lid owners, i have read they need to be polished a few times a year, depending on weather/etc, is this true? I figured it must be because Zoom actually includes a polishing compound. I NEVER had to do this with my Runabout fuel lid so was curious, thanks in advance! :)

JamieH
12-20-2015, 03:43 PM
Yes, you're going to want to polish it every so often. It's bare, otherwise untreated, aluminum. And that Pikal polish included with new Zoom lids is good stuff. Keep it on a shelf with the rest of your car care products with a white microfiber and just give it a quick polish before a drive whenever you notice it looks less than stunning.

oldgrayleather
12-20-2015, 03:47 PM
I polished mine for the pic. It had a lot of small white oxidization type marks all over. Didn't get a mirror finish but think that's more a case of not enough elbow grease.

JamieH

Yep, bare aluminum exposed to rain will have water/oxidation spots pop up, and they are stubborn to remove.

The G03(body) i bought this morning did look a little different than the one Bill sent me a pic of but the mounting portion from what I could see looks correct, although Bill said it fit a little loose but stayed put. Thanks Tony! I still can't figure out how you got yours quicker? I ordered mine on the 18th, iirc, i think you said you ordered yours a day or two later. Either way 10 days from order to arrival from Japan is pretty good.

I have the same issue with my arm in zoom monaco 240... I think zoom should change that on their website...

I emailed them withe the issue - they asked me to send picture of wrong arm. Just waiting for their anwser (I believe they shoul replace the arm), if not I will need to order new/correct one.

Thanks to my "internal parts clock" I managed to hear the door bell thru my deep R.E.M. sleep, I worked last night, and got outside just in time to get a box via the wonderful USPS gentleman from Zoom Engineering in Japan since they require a signature. Here is the contents of said box that made it here in just 6 days from Japan:

Zoom Engineering G03 rear view mirror arm which is suppose to be for the 05-08 NC according to their site BUT it is the correct one for NA8's w/ the rear view mirror mounted to the windshield.

First things first I had to confirm the Zoom Engineering G03 rear view mirror arm that Bill w/ Miata Roadster said should fit, did indeed fit.......YES IT DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU BILL!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a comparison pic of the OEM NA8 windshield mounted rear view mirror vs the Zoom Engineering TS carbon fiber mirror w/ G03 arm:

As you can see the Zoom Engineering TS cf mirror is a little bigger and according to Zoom is their widest mirror at 256mm/10", I measured the physical dimensions of the mirror at 10 1/8" wide and 2 5/8" tall w/ a actual mirror size of 9 3/8'' wide and 2 1/4'' tall vs the OEM mirror I measured and the physical dimensions of the mirror is 9 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" tall and a mirror size of 9" wide and 2 1/4" tall. Here are some comparison pics of the OEM installed vs the Zoom Engineering TS carbon fiber mirror:

The Zoom Engineering mirror even though only being a little bigger, seems to make a great improvement due to the mirror being convex and having the anti glare coating so I'm excited how much of a difference it makes when driving. Bill had mentioned his fit loosely but thankfully this one fit snug thanks to a Phillips head screw that you tighten that has a nut on the other side of the mount that fills the gap between the arm and mounting tab.

Also they have a plastic version, listed as POM iirc, and a aluminum version of this mount, listed as ALUM iirc, and the listing on Rakuten didn't specify one or the other, iirc, but thankfully I got the aluminum version.

Thanks again to Bill w/ Miata Roadster for being such a big help with establishing the correct rear view mirror arm I needed from Zoom and Randy aka Phatmiata because im certain he had informed me of the same thing via PM but I had deleted the PM I guess.

A really subtle mod, looks right at home! Also, huge thumbs up for Bill being so professional and helpful, and for you giving him the credit he deserves. Really hard to find such people these days...

Thanks Peter and Harry! :drinkto:

It is a more subtle modification and would virtually go undetected from the outside of the vehicle if not for the carbon fiber finish. Imo, the Zoom Engineering rear view mirror is FANTASTIC! Definitely a part that is equal parts form and function and that doesn't happen very often.

The convex and slightly bigger mirror make a significant improvement in the field of view(just refer to the pics from the drivers seat/view for a idea) and the anti glare coating works amazingly well! After sun down/at night, even if someone had their brights on in a higher vehicle behind me there is virtually no glare, i absolutely love this mirror and highly recommend it for anyone that wants any of the aforementioned benefits!:slayer:

Fuel lid showed up past week, super nice piece! Should have the mirrors in hand this week, as they shipped on the 5th! Can't wait to get this stuff installed!

I may do something along the lines of powder coating or hydrodipping the mounts for the mirrors and erhaos even the lid itself, I have a $300 credit at the dippers after winning a contest with them. I'd probably have them done to match the work I had done to my work wheels last year.

Has anyone painted/powder coated a zoom fuel lid? I wonder how it would look?

There was a picture of one powdercoated black and it looked really nice and subtle. However, it is such a nice part I would not do it.

In today's age, is it better to order direct from Zoom Engineering via their website for shipping to USA via EMS? Or is it better to use their Rakuten shop?

I've used their Rakuten shop a couple of times with no issues.

Unfortunately the Rakuten shop closed down a while ago but was an excellent way to view the entire Zoom collection and order directly. They take PayPal and will still ship direct and now that EMS is back to shipping to the US there is a more reasonable cost option. Yoshida-san’s English is very good and they are generally quick to respond.

It seems Zoom Engineering offer the following options:
1. Purchase directly via the Zoom Engineering website
2. Rakuten shop
3. Yahoo! Auctions Japan
4. Amazon Japan

Unfortunately, I believe my Amazon Prime Membership is limited to the United States and purchases made at Amazon.com so that’s out. And I believe Yahoo!Japan Auctions will require the use of a broker and will incur additional fees. I’ve never purchased from Rakuten before so don’t know the process. Looks like buying direct is my best bet.

I use fromjapan.co.jp for my yja and Rakuten purchases. No additional fees besides like ¥300 flat plan fee. Sometimes they have Rakuten coupons too (5-10%).

I ended up ordering directly from Zoom Engineering. The prices on their website were lowest even when compared to their Rakuten shop. I figure fewer middlemen is better for both Zoom and me. Shipping is the real killer but that's an issue regardless. Fingers crossed it arrives in good condition in a reasonable amount of time. 5 years ago I felt like there was tremendous competition for limited parts. Things have only gotten worse. If there's some rare NA item you've been wanting for a long time, don't delay! These shops and parts might not be here next year....
