View Full Version : What Other Hardware Needed While Doing Rear Brakes?

My '92 needs rear brakes & rotors. I am considering Porter field R4S, Stop Tech Sport or Hawk HPS pads. What else should I have ready to replace while while I'm doing the brake job? This '92 has 53K miles and is just purchased so I don't know it intimately yet and not sure until I get in there what I will be dealing with. I would like to attempt to at least have all parts for the brake job when I do it so I don't have go chase down parts while in the midst.

Do you guys recommend any other hardware by default for an unknown situation like this?

Pins & pins bushings perhaps (is it just 1 pin per side that is replaceable)?
Will the pads I'm considering come with new backing plates?
Anything else?

Suppose it depends how deep you want to go. You could always change the lines for stainless when you are in there. Also a good time to paint the calipers and brackets as well as the center part of the rotors.
I like a little more rear braking and with stock pads up front the Axxis Ultimates would go well in the rear.
Be sure to loosen the pad adjusting screw to spread the pads apart.

I've done that on my Buick with custom wheels. The paint only lasted a year.

Does anyone have a better experience than that? What paint are you using and what steps to prep?

Clean up the slider pins and re-grease everything with high temp grease as well.

I'm refreshing the brakes on my '91 now, also. Here's where I'm at thus far:

I was going to paint the calipers, but found that a little love with a high speed wire wheel (4" diameter on my drill) and they look near-new. Be careful of rubber pieces.

Centric rotors are already black in the middle!

I went Hawk HPS and am adding braided lines (about $100 for all 4 lines).

If I find braking feel to be insufficient, I may mess with different master cylinders and boosters. Lots of info on that around...

After the wire wheel, what did you use to protect the metal from rust?

Which part number/model name Centrics did you use? I see a few different types avail for a Miata on Rock Auto.

Where did you buy your Hawk pads?

I bought the Centric e-coated ones for my rears. I have Amazon Prime, and with the free shipping, it was a great deal

I haven't applied anything to protect them at this point. I'm assuming they're 25 years-old, and as nicely as they cleaned up this time, I can do it again in a few years if need-be.

I used Amazon like Demon for the Rotors, and I think I did the same with the pads. If you're being super-frugal, it never hurts to throw part #'s into google and see what comes up, sometimes you can find good deals with free shipping.

Hawk Pads Part #HB148 F.560 (0000-03-5101-HO) D457, HB157 F484 (000-03-5111-HO) D458

Centric Rotors # 120.45034, not sure if front or rear. One set came in bags, so no numbers on those... sorry!

You can use Caliper paint, I just used a high temp paint and all is well. I use acetone to clean them.

Looks like the Centric rotors are a much better price on Rock Auto...rear CENTRIC 12045035 Premium are $13.09 each with $6.99 delivery for 2. Too bad they don't seem to sell StopTech, Porterfield or hawk pads....
