Nice price for sure. I would like to know more as well. I am looking to replace mine too. I have been quoted ~$250 for Bilstein lifters through a close source of mine.

Did you not clean yours and even made a video? ;)

I did, and I mixed the bags up when I put them on a shelf. I'm an idiot. I now have 1 or 2 that are really bad. I am still thinking of taking the uninstalled ones and cleaning them again or just replacing the whole set.

So you managed to install one that was not cleaned?

I'm an idiot.

Nope.

just replacing the whole set.

It's tempting, but not with the price that my local Mazda dealer wants for oem-lifters (120usd each)

I read about valve stems that people tends to have issues with non-oem brands. Therefore I'm a little worried about non-oem lifters as well. :p

That's what I did. I managed to put 1 or more in the car that sat dry for 5-6 years in the car. :p

You *could* also try to cross reference the part though Ford and Kia. They used B6 and BP engines in their products.

That's curious about the valve stems because I guess I don't understand how that could happen, unless the material on the non-OE lifters is too soft (or hard)? Mazda doesn't make lifters, so that's why I was going to stick with the Bilsteins I was quoted.

The only reference to ITM I found was as an engine component company based out of LA (Carson). They are and import/export supplier. In direct reference to lifters, the Mitsubishi enthusiasts reference them, but the reputation was unknown from my findings.

Considering the process to swap these out, I'm more inclined to buy a known brand at $250 rather than another I don't. Just my $.02.

Agree, but not 1900usd as the insane local Mazda dealer wants.

I did write some mumbling over at another site (https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=621423).

Hmmm, I think $40/ea or whatever you are seeing there is gouging. I saw them for between $8 and $20 each by searching around the internet. As the point of this thread, it's the quality of the components for the price, or value. What's it worth to you? I can probably swap mine out in a few hours, but I am hoping to wait until the weather cools. At the same time, you could refurbish a spare set or your own for under $100 in chemical and tools. Probably enlarge the holes on the bucket a little, if so inclined. It's a time vs cost issue in that instance. If the parts are in demand, you could refurbish the set you remove and sell them or as is.

Stian, I was doing some reading this weekend about ultrasonic cleaning, the DIY HLA cleaning at the top of this section, and I am going to try to refurb my HLAs. I bought a small, 65 watt ultrasonic cleaner with a heating element, so I am going to try that. The cleaner is about $60.

I was reading how machinists will place parts in plastic bags, put liquid cleaner in the bags, and then put the bags in water in the ultrasonic cleaner. This is to protect the cleaner bin.

I'll disassemble the HLAs and keep the parts together in their own bag, and run them through the ultrasonic cleaner. It may be slow, but at least my wife will get a cleaner for her jewelry. ;)

I'll try to document what I do. I think I will be more mindful of where the oil hole for the HLAs are oriented as well when I install them.

Brief update:

My iSonic ultrasonic cleaner arrived today. I found my other set of HLAs and sure enough, I DID mix them. :( The good news is that the clean ones were labeled and separate, I just placed them in the wrong bin. The other 8 were from the spare engine. When I took those apart, I now understand why the ones in my current engine tick so bad! They are dirtier than Alex's t-shirt after taco Tuesday.

I broke down the dirty HLAs and put each in their own bag, then filled the bag with about an ounce of Purple Power cleaner, burped and sealed the bags and placed them in the tank.

Anyway, I ran them through two 8 minute cycles and they came out cleaner than the first set I did two years ago! The heating element on my ultrasonic cleaned, combined with the chemical acted like a hot-tank bath with ultrasonic waves blasting at them. Really very cool!

Cool that it worked so well.

On the other hand now I can't wait for you to test out the ITM lifters. :p

Awesome reply. :)

I have my share of flaws, one major mental one is that I have problems transferring thoughts to written word.

My intention was the say that since you got such a good result cleaning your lifters you will probably not try out the ITM lifters. :)
So I have to decide all by my self if I should try them out or not. :p

I only found a few posts elsewhere about people who used them. I have an extra set, so worst case I'm out $65 and a few hours but still have a neat tool to use later for other stuff.

Cleaning was a success! Had some friends over to help/laugh at me, and eat tacos, drink beer.

Pretty straight forward job, took a few hours, but could have been shorter had I not installed the intake cam caps backwards. No big deal. :)

Started it up and it was a hellacious noise as the HLAs filled up. I was sure to point the HLA holes towards the tiny galleys in the bores on the head. I had one stubborn one, but I went for a drive and by the time I reached 2 miles, it was fine. I drove the car hard to heat up the oil, parked it to see if the HLAs would drain out and return to their ticking, but they didn't. :) I can feel the extra power of having the HLAs fully operational. There were 2 or 3 that were pretty soft. All is well.

This was more like tar than oil.

IMO all it takes is a 20K mile oil change and you get this. :(

Would be surprised if they were not given the gunk that was in them. Oddly, there's something really satisfying to me in de-crapping old parts, more than actually replacing them with brand new ones.

Is soft good or bad?

I did clean mine and was not satisfied with the result, some where hard and did travel smooth and full length compared to the rest. Guess I will cherry pick from the bag of lifters I got from a friend of mine.

Dang. I found they began to firm up as I bled them. I was feeling for how smoothly they compressed and watched for easily and consistently each released the air. When I started the car, they are ticked really bad for the first few minutes. They quieted down and were fine from then on.
