Can someone school me on Macro lens? Would it be better to buy extension tubes or just get an actual lens? Any recommendations for a Canon? I was looking at Kenko tubes.

In my opinion it's always better to go with an actual lens vs an extension tube. I would say for Canon, try checking out some of the 100mm primes.

A lot of good info here: http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnadetail.asp?threadID=22961
If you can afford it, I'd suggest the macro lens since it'd also serve as a portrait lens.

A good budget macro lens is the Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro, or the sigma 50mm f2.8 macro (cheaper than 105mm). Depending on what type of macro you would like to do id judge that to decide 105mm or 50mm if you go that route.

Oh and extension tubes are shit.

Here are some pics of the local town right outside of base. It's a very small town, with small cobblestone streets in most parts of the interior. My boss wanted to show me the town and took me with her when she got her nails done.

All pics taken with a Nikon D5000 and 35mm f/1.8

This was just outside the nail salon my boss was at. (The focal point was at the end of the street)

This was a cool sculpture/statue right next to the harbor/marina.

This series was taken along the waterfront before I got to the sculpture.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7030/6607586375_302de8816f_b.jpg

This one turned out to be one of my favorite shots of the day. My only gripe are the two flag poles right in the middle of the picture. I don't have photoshop so I couldn't edit them out. I have two different versions. The first one I "warmed up" the photo with basic Mac editing software. I like cause it adds a touch of color to the brick. The second is the original.

Please feel free to comment on them and what I can do better as far as exposure, composition, ideas, etc. The next time I go out I'll be sure to change my cameras color settings to "vivid" in hopes it will brighten up the colors on the buildings. I'm relearning my camera and shooting techniques after a 5 month hiatus, so bear with me lol

I got a sweet DSLR setup from my girlfriend for Christmas
Body: Canon T3i
Lens: 18-55(standard), 50mm prime, Tamron 70-300

I took these shots with the 50mm when I first got it. I am no professional and I'm still trying to figure out how to use this device. Its a big jump going from Iphone pics to DSLR!

I'm jealous! I'd like to hear a list of all of the equipment that people have! I'm just going to list my bodies, lenses and strobes so I don't make this too long haha.
I've been on my 5D forever. I moved up slowly over 10 years to get to the equipment I have now. I started with my mom's old Minolta SLR, then switched to a Canon Powershot, then I moved on to the Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) (the day it came out!), then a Canon 40D, then my 5D which is what I have now, and along with my Rebel K2 (35mm) and Minolta those are the only three bodies I currently have.
I've been collection Canon lenses for 7 years so I've currently got:
Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 L USM
Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L IS
Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L USM
Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II
Sigma 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 DG
Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 LD Tele-Macro (1:2)

Strobes:
Canon Speedlite 430 EX
Canon Speedlite 580 EX II

Lost it in an external HDD crash :(

I know how you feel, I lost half of my photos in a hard drive crash a few years ago (~50,000 photos).

I know how you feel, I lost half of my photos in a hard drive crash a few years ago (~50,000 photos).

You had it worse. I only lost a couple hundred. All shots I had taken on my D40 when I first started so nothing too major. There's really only a couple I wish I could recover since that's what I was shooting with while living in WA.

As far as gear I'm only rocking two lenses, no strobes or anything else. I'm working on it though.

Canon 50mm F/1.4 USM
Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 with macro capabilities between 200-300 (1:2)

Any critiques on those shots?

As of Now:

Canon EOS T2i
--18-55mm Kit lens
--50mm f/1.8 "nifty-fifty"
--8mm Samyang Fisheye F/ 3.5 (SHITTY compared to my old fisheye)
--Ebay Flash w/ Diffuser

Gone: Traded and Sold off
--Nikon D40x
--Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.0 Fisheye BEST fisheye i have ever used
--Nikkor 55-200mm VR decent for the price
--Nikkor 50mm f/ 1.4 honestly should have stayed with the 1.8 the extra $150 for .4 on the aperture was not worth it
--Nikkor 85mm Best portrait lens ever
--Sigma 5.6mm Decent fisheye if you like the peep hole effect

I liked Nikon for lenses, but Cameras were not my favorite.
And I love Canons for almost everything, but lens selection to me lacks certain things

I wish I would have found out about the nikkor lens to canon adapter before i sold all my shit haha

EDIT: I have a stupid list for 35mm and film equip, but this is the DSLR thread so i'll save that for another

Film Gear:
--Pentax K1000 (First one always grab)
--Argus Seventy-Five
--Nikon F3 (light leak right now :( ..)
--Minolta x-700
--about 13 different style Polaroids
--Pentax 50mm K mount f/ 1.4
--Minolta 400mm f/ 7 (horrible zoom lens haha)
--Bunch of no name 50mm ranging from f/ 1.2 - 2.0

lol more to list but im not in front of it at the moment rain check for 7 months haha

hey maybe you guys can help me out. My nikon d50 whenever i take a photo i see a red dot in the exact same place every time. Sometimes depending on the color that i am taking a photo there is a lighter red line going down the photo from the red dot. Maybe you guys have some insight.

when i try to post up a picture the picture is too small to notice. And when looking on my photos i now can not find the line. My only problem is just the one small red dot.

is this a damaged sensor or just a dirty sensor.

ok it wont let me remove the terrible photo i took that i uploaded by accident.

There is no need to take it somewhere unless you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself. You can get a little rocket blower and if that doesn't do the trick there are many different paths to take from there. Check out the tips on this site: http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/methods.html

what method would you recommend?

I haven't done it for years, but it was with face to face help from a professional and I think that eclipse cleaner is what I used. For a swab, we used half of a popsicle stick with a pec pad on the end (see bedheadben's link). Be light with the pressure. If the stain is a bit stubborn, just keep swapping out the swabbing material and continue going over it.

Warning: cat picture! Yes I am breaking the rule of the thread. Get over it :)

This is my new cat, took her from a friend who is good as a friend but not as a pet owner. Poor thing has a gash on the side of her face from where her littermate brother bit her and it's all infected (be glad you can't see it in the picture, it's quite nasty looking). Took her to the vet and got her on some anti-biotics. Previous owner said they couldn't afford to take her to the vet. She's seven months old and hadn't had a single shot until I took her to the vet. She's sweet as can be. I wuvs her.

I won't say never tilt the camera, but unless you have a specific reason to tilt the camera, try to keep it level. Of course, feel free to experiment in how you compose your shots. Some people might like tilted pictures.

It is just very apparent in landscape photos. (Yes, I've been guilty of it in the past)

Here's an example:

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2215/2050956338_f30983ab57_b.jpg

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2243/2220827997_a7b991f3cd_z.jpg?zz=1

It's such a subtle difference, but once you see it, it's hard to ignore. BTW, Picasa has an easy fix to straighten/tilt your photos. (and yes, it's free)

Horizon at the Grand Canyon is wonky, many MANY people go home and correct it. It's just the way the landscape is, in fact to get it straight he'd have to tilt the camera.

There are many noise reduction filters in PS that help a lot. You could also try mounting the camera on a tripod, using a lower ISO and a longer shutter speed. Obviously upgrading the body would help too.

I keep my iso at 200 all the time, per recommendations found on the internet and various books. I'd love to have a nicer body (I have a d5000), but I can't afford it. Some day I'd like to own the new Nikon D4, but its about $6k more than I can afford at the moment lol I might look to upgrade to the D300S someday. It seems to get good reviews and is pretty affordable.

All my low light sessions from now on are def gonna be on a tripod-- I handheld all of my previous low light shots, and as a result, had to crank the iso to 800-1600 to get the shutter speeds reasonable. (I was shooting wide open of course.)

I don't think so, but it would definitely affect sharpness. I have a UV filter for each of my lenses, but the only time I put it on, even on my L glass, is if the lens is in a somewhat dangerous situation.

Flyin 92

Hmm I might try shooting without it a few times and see if I can't sharpen up my images a bit. The biggest reason I leave it on is because I don't want my lens glass getting scratched by dirt/dust.

This was my first ever attempt at 'light painting' in the dark. My husbands E46 M3.

It's not the best, but I don't think it's that bad. I wish I wouldn't have gotten so much light on the ground in the front of the car, but more light on the side of the car and the back wheel. I used a cheap Duracell LED flashlight I had laying around the house as the only light source.

(Crappy resolution, sorry!)

So what are my options then?

If it's still under warranty, you can send it back.
If not, it's $200-300 to fix.

Otherwise, the only option is to clone it out of each picture. Some cameras and some software can automatically remove it each time, though.

Guess I will post up some of my work. Even though I enjoy photography and photography is part of my job, I rarely take the time to take quality photos myself. So often my pictures are just auto settings just to capture the moment. However, I went on a cruise 2 years ago and spent time actually caring what I was photographing. Here are some of those pics.

why does that bug you?

Something about it. Whether its the rules it feels like it breaks or something about it feels unnatural. Every time I look at those photos I feel like my eyes are constrained to the left side. I start to pull right, I hit the lines of the car not even 1/2 the way through the photo and I'm going back left again. I have to make a conscious effort to look past the car to see what's over there. If its progressive art trying to make a statement by it then I am ok with it. If its trying to be a photo of a car, well then I feel like the car isn't getting its fair share.

Edit: I think your photo comes as close as possible to pulling it off. It is below all the horizontal lines and almost works. I still would of framed it a little further right.

After awhile, all car photos start looking the same if everyone composes it the same way. There are times when empty/dead space will compliment the image.
As Ansel Adams stated, "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs."

You're definitely off to a good start. The composition looks pretty good in most of the shots. Work on playing with the depth of field, aperture and focus. Try shooting in full manual mode. Don't be afraid to take "crappy" photos while you're experimenting with new techniques.

In the last shot, the back of the car looks like it's not in focus, one of those things that would be improved through experimentation.

Thank you, all of this was shot in manual mode. I have been trying to get that shallow depth of field but have yet to get the desired effect. Maybe my lense is too small? Doing lots of reading on this tonight!

If you want a shallower depth of field, drop the aperture down. For a larger depth of field, to get everything in focus, bring it back up.

Thank you for not shooting 10000 superbokeh photos of flowers and spider webs.

I like the first shot with the car centered in the bottom 1/3 of the composition. Are you shooting RAW? You might want to try and rescue some detail out of those shadows. There's a lot lost in all that darkness. Both on the car and in the mountains in the background.

I am having on of the biggest dilemma of my life, right now. Continue saving for D800, or give my car an exterior makeover. Both will cost just about the same, give or take. I was going to source a used D700. But after some thinking, the D700 is 4 1/2 years old. D800 has a shit ton of new goodies. Question is if I should continue saving an extra grand for the D800 or start piecing together the exterior of my car. :(

Honestly go with whatever will make you more happy! Some will tell you to go with the camera and some will tell you to go with the car parts but I personally would decide on whatever I was craving more.

A good RAW editing app is your friend. I agree on the size of the files being a major pain though.

I agree however I do have the JPG settings set-up how I like on my 5D and it usually does the job. I shoot RAW when I can't get my histogram right or if I feel like there's going to be lots of clipping.

We all have cravings that we can't immediately satisfy but you're going to have to make the decision of which is more important right now.

I would probably go with the camera, just because it would provide me more happiness for longer and in more situations.

"always requires some post" well, that's why they call it RAW because you're adding all the data and processing to the image.

If your images are lacking pop, it's because you're not using the software correctly.
This picture took about 2 minutes to process in Lightroom and shot in RAW. If I shot it in JPG, it would've taken much longer to get the same result.

I still would of framed it a little further right.

i know what you mean!! sometimes it stresses me out. so stop taking pics at that angle!!

thanks. I was taking a picture of the bubble flying around and thought I should work on my people category of my photography since I'm a little nervous taking portrait pictures. I took pictures of the little girl since she wanted to show me how to make bubbles with her wand. it was fun.

the lamp picture was taken when I spotted the overgrowth from across the street while walking with my gf and took a few snaps of it quickly and ran back across the street. I was in a downtown section of new symrna yesterday eating at the Garlic. Which by the way is an amazing restaurant.

I can't wait for next week. Looks like I will finally move past point and shoots up to a better camera. The budget has stuck me to a Nikon d5100 with 2kit lenses to start a 18-55 and 70-200 or 70-300 to start with . Should be fun to start learning on.

I'm having to look at Cameta camera right now since they offer refurbished models. Looks like it will save me around $200 doing so. The one I'm looking at is like $750 with new Nikon lenses. . Thought about going to a set up with Tamron lenese but was warned against it on another forum.

Jeff,
One of my lenses (used on Nikon film) is a 28-200mm Tamron AF Aspherical XR (if) 1:38-5.6 Macro. All lens (same manufacture) are not equal. Lens works pretty good, but it's not Nikon glass. I have attached a link to some of the snap shots taken with this lens. Page #1 has some photos, page #2 all taken with the Tamron.

maybe a polarizing filter??? Kinda like taking the glare off water with sunglasses

I love pop ups
02-27-2012, 03:44 PM
Polarizing can help but probably won't eliminate, not shooting at noon also helps. Or shoot in the shade. Regardless if you have direct sun on a reflective surface...it's going to reflect pretty harshly.

I got the Dell XPS with an i5 intel core processor and 6gb of memory upgradeable to 16gbs with 1gb of memory dedicated to the radeon graphics card. I plan on buying a better card in a month or a little after so. I also picked up a LG IPS 23 in. LED Monitor IPS236.
