well, i started tinkering with cars after being over in japan for a few months. I picked up a 07 mazdaspeed3 (Ill3st haha) and learned everything on that (starting from changing the oil!). I picked up this car last fall - previously owned by a grandma who gave it to her kid to spend a bunch of money on. He got a fully built FM motor, had Full Race build a custom turbo kit, and riced up the interior. Maybe he was military since it seemed to have sat for a long time. Picked it up and started to work...

I'm going to take some posts I made on another forum and put them all here for posterity. enjoy!

Plans for the car are to get this turbo system dialed in with a smaller turbo (currently a full race t3/t61 which is ~gt35 sized). I'm thinking a GT2871 with a large exhaust side since I should be able to rev to around 8500 with all the headwork and upgraded springs/valves/etc. The HKS cams will also give me some power at the top end, where the stock ones usually drop off at 8k. AEM EMS needs to be installed with GM sensors, LSx truck coils. Currently has an old Link ECU (FM's ECU solution of choice before they made the Hydra). Probably upgrade to ID 1000cc injectors and run E85 after I get all that other stuff done. There's some other stuff I should probably do like ATI damper and a coolant reroute too.

Interior was all color matched to the body. it was an eyesore, so i'm going through and toning it down. Painted a bunch of the panels with plastidip for now. I'm going to go the retro roadster route in the future.

Did a bunch of maintenance fluids:
Rotella T6 5w40 in the engine, Motorcraft XT-M5-QS trans fluid, and Redline 75w90 in the diff.
Also threw in a set of fresh NGK 4644 spark plugs in.

Also replacing the front suspension control arms - got a hold of some V8Roadster LCA's for cheap, my UCA's need replacing since the ball joints are crusty and the boots are gone. Also going to depowered a PS rack and get the pinion welded to reduce slop.

----------------------------------

So I've been working in the cold on the Miata quite a bit. I can't really take good pictures in the badly lit garage, so these will have to do for now.

I decided I'm going the retro themed - lots of chrome. The interior was so bad when I bought it, it was getting to me... so I ended up getting a bunch of interior parts. Here's a taste of what it was like:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-tMYWOUvR2wA/TxjBpExgj_I/AAAAAAAACqI/iYyF9jEtgDk/s1024/P6190762.JPG

so embarrasing - everything from the air vents, door handles, center console, etc. were painted to match the exterior color. Blue streetglows under the dash LOL.

I plastidipped most of the parts, but I'm replacing most of the stuff anyway.

Hard dog M1 HCDD Chrome Rollbar
This is finally installed, took me FOREVER to do in a cold ass garage by myself. Looking back, I should've bought a unibit, I would've been done in less than half the time.

And test fitting LE door panels to see how it'd look in a mariner blue car...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-q80iksspl4w/TzAolOgUXvI/AAAAAAAACvo/q0QB1uIyQTI/s800/IMAG0306.jpg

Got the spool welded by ARtech to eliminate slop in the steering:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iHjgphgZtT4/TzAoY7ak7AI/AAAAAAAACvg/-YCuARfBBFg/s800/IMAG0305.jpg

Got new tie rods - these are secret element rods that are supposedly stronger than stock and give a bit more steering angle. Also got supernow rod ends "overnighted from japan" so i won't have to deal with bumpsteer.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Y4B_u-Zg5dY/TzAozuHm2DI/AAAAAAAACv4/s5fiXxodUg8/s800/IMAG0315.jpg

gt2871. wanted to get a tial 0.64 exhaust housing but the way full race built the manifold (top mounted) there's no room for it since i'd have to raise the turbo to taper the collector for the v-band. so it looks like a t3 0.64 housing for me. I'm going to sort out all the suspension and brakes before I get to sorting out the turbo/tune though.

uca's replaced. braces fitted and holes drilled/undercoated. going to probably bolt them on today.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Ax-sMsemN6I/T4nLueHWjJI/AAAAAAAAC7A/7CxURwvqAvA/s720/IMAG0438.jpg

stripped down the koni paint cause they were a bit beat up and showing some rust. debating on painting them retro koni red or just koni yellow

pretty sure i'm doing a two tone. i put some red on the dash to keep it consistent with the door panel, red package tray carpet... and leaving the bottom of the dash and carpet black. got a zoom center to put my gauges in and got all those chrome vent rings on.

oh and a zoom lotus elan style gas cap, which needs to be polished up.

most of the coilover bits i need should be coming in this week, so after i get those repainted should be ready to throw on! trying to get all the suspension stuff on so i just have to get it aligned once.

yeah so i'm going to go retro with the coilover repaint since i have to repaint them anyway and i'll get the classic koni stickers too. yeah nobody is going to see this shit anyway, but whatever, might as well for my own nerdiness!

old 356 shocks

http://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss52/cobraboy1/DSCF0129.jpg

http://www.nlaparts.com/store/images/konrearshock_lg.gif

i found various color codes and asked koni too - they said sherwin williams controls rust high visibility red was the color. so i went with that since it was in rattle can form.

added mud guards. painted and installed koni race coilovers with swift 700/450 springs, fat cat motorsports shock mounts and bump stops. probably have to raise up the rear a bit

and while i was painting the coilovers for the millionth time i freshened up the wipers that were faded and rusty. terrible pics, i know.

----------------------------------

well it's out and about, mostly because the strut on my ms3 snapped - which kinda kicked me in the pants to get this on the road. a few stumbles including not tightening the wheels, an injector becoming unplugged, and the turbo not being connected to the intercooler... but it's alive and well haha.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/562129_619446554184_220301118_32124114_41325916_n. jpg

butterfly brace and frame rails are on
put an odyssey pc925lmj battery in
exhaust crack fixed
depowered rack with secret element tie rods and super now rod ends on
but have to adjust the preload on the rack cause it's wayyy too tight.
needles on the cluster are in, interior is mostly in - i still need to cut the carpet and the rear tower plastics for the harness bar and glue on some sound deadening to the carpet.

found a set of nickel 6ul's, sadly 15x8, but they were at a great price with tires so they'll be good for now...

http://i43.servimg.com/u/f43/15/93/29/92/20120510.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=13&u=15932992)

i really need to upgrade the brakes and change over this turbo.

--------------------------------------

With the 6UL's on. Sitting a little higher now than this picture.
Replaced the slave cylinder - they are pretty notorious for leaking - turns out mine was leaking like crazy into the boot. I just thought my clutch was grabby - but after I swapped the new one in it drives so much better now!

Racing beat 1.125" front and Mazdaspeed Miata rear sway bars are in
Stainless clutch line and Mazda competition motor mounts too
Waiting on some adjustable endlinks...

Brake swap soon I hope!

--------------------------------------

Rolled my fenders - even with 3 cars under my belt, i managed to crack the paint on 3 of the 4 corners. I have never had so much trouble rolling fenders before (with the eastwood tool)! I even got the paint/metal hot enough that it melted into the urethane roller... and it still cracked. Then, I read about a bunch of people just using a rubber mallet to roll their fenders, so i tried that to get the fender started and then completed it with the roller. Only got smart enough to do that on the last corner which I thankfully didn't crack any of the paint.

I took it apart and have a full Artech system to throw on with an EFR turbo. I'm getting rust patched and hopefully getting it painted ecurie ecosse blue. Unfortunately haven't had much time to devote to it.

I think I know you lol. Zach's friend? We met at cars, coffee, and karts?

Which EFR are you going with and what're your power goals?
