yes my friend bought it, the problem is rust behind the rear arch extensions there are holes inside the trunk lol

if the car is beyond repair the kit will be removed and go on to another 220bhp turbo car project

Hi all... and thanks Hooligan. Well "I was that soldier"........ collected the car last night. I first walked away form the car due to the under kit rust in the rear. I then went back for the wheels and thought, wtf... i may as well buy it. Only since chatting to Hooli and another esteemed roadster friend did I realise what i'd got. Despite is "ugly?" looks, I think that its "worth" is in sticking to its origins...so all the body panels will stay and be refurb'd. Not sure of direction on drivetrain etc or colours. We had indeed been planning a turbo rebuild in Gulf colours but not sure this is the car for that. I suspect that this may just be a body kit now with all its tuned parts gone but we will explore....

on the subject of looks... well, if was good enough for Jack Hayashi it's good enough for me.. the car was originally in BRG (and since done in blue) but if restored on this shell may well go back to its roots like this one....

The drive last night was interesting, I was dreading the 16" wheels but in fact the car was totally planted! .....

Power wise, i'm not sure. It has a stock'ish zorst and no induction which won't help. It wasn't the typical responsive revvy 1.6 but has a very deep engine tone under acceleration which I SO hope may just indicate a bored out 1.6 engine.

Hello all, I'm another piece of this puzzle. The car is being stored at my house at the moment so Mrs Cribbohx doesn't see it. Having driven it to work this morning it really does drive well, but I'm pretty sure the engine is standard. If anything it might have a different ECU as it appears to have a V-TEC like syndrome above 4,500 rpm which no other roadster I have driven has had.

It does drive very well though and the heaters work which is a bonus compared with my car!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.
The Hayashi is my dads (cribbohx) and mine and will be putting it back to its former glory.
If the Hayashi doesn't have its original engine (forged pistons, uprated cams etc...) we will more than likely put our 230bhp turbo engine and running gear in it so it goes as well as it looks.
I will put a build thread up so you can watch the progress unfold, we might dyno it (rolling road) to see what it is currently putting out and go from there.
But i will leave you with some more piccies

If She's originally a BRG, can we look up the vin? Is she a 1991? Is she one of the original 4000? I would think this would make her more rare-er. Photos look great, and I LOVE seeing the small details, like the rear lights. Very cool the they are shaped into the rear fenders. Have fun.

How did it get there? Who brought it over? How long has it been sitting for? Did the owners have any idea what they had? We may never know.

Ok...well, i'm sure this isn't the only Hayashi in the UK... an MX5nutz friend commented that he saw one at an OC meet a while back but that may have just been the nosecone, not sure. Also the link below from mx5nutz refers to an ebay ad not too long ago. The op incorrectly thought it may be a Clubsport and unfortunately the ebay ad has gone but later in the thread a poster puts up some comparison pics below... this shows an HBC car which in fact would imo have been imported to and registered in the UK at the same time as mine (showing reg H481JBJ ... mine is H526JBJ). I will find time to do some proper detective work and we'll take a closer look at the car in the next couple of weeks.

James is storing the car for me at the mo' and we have a bet for a "pint" on the engine...he reckons its a boggo 1.6 and i'm thinking different. The engine doesn't respond like any 1.6 i've owned (and there been a few now) also the engine note is very low... it performs much more like the 1.8's i've driven, so, i'm hoping and praying that I discover a 1.6 bored out by Jack Hayashi. Either way i'm on a winner... either its JH tuned or if not , one way or another this car will receive my entire FM Link managed 228 bhp turbo set up and running gear... and either way, James or me will be enjoying a free pint!

I'm going to enjoy this build!... (in between wheeler dealering other cars to pay for it!)

Indeed a shame the wing mirrors are missing as they do look extreamly cool ... i guessing that this option wasn't purchased by the original buyer...Phatmiata's advert link below seems to show that each of the components in the kit was separately priced.

Well the good news is that Garath "the MX5 Restorer" (one of the UK's premier miata restorers" has taken a look and reckons it can be saved. The rear 1/4's are rotting out a bit and we expect this is due to the water being trapped between the kit and the rear 1/4 (the rear 1/4 effectively becoming and inner wing). Not much other rust tho' and sills are clean. Plan is, to cut out and replace rear 1/4's from inside the boot, then, dig out all the broken filler and re-fill.

The bad news, is that funds are going to be tight for me next year so, it all needs to be done on a budget. I did really want to see the original car go back to BRG, as it was made, but funds will probably mean it is kept Mariner Blue once done.

Really would like a set of Hayashi rear lights if not Barchatta if not Zoom... to replicate the original Hayashi look. A good friend has some Hayashi front lights too and I will pray at the alter of JDM that we might agree some part swapping... it would be SO good to see some original parts on this car. A set of Axis front lights and a GV rear light unit might be useful bargaining chips I hope.

No idea. It's possible that the car never had the rear lights or wing mirrors as I think these were all optional parts. Likewise I am not sure if the engine is a Hayashi bored out bottom end?... the cams all appear to be standard. It certainly doesn't behave liek any 1.6 i've driven but its been put to me that this may be the 16" wheels and not the engine.IN the short term I have the following mods ready and waiting... ust to give the existing engine a chance to show its best:

Well the project officially started today as the rear arches were removed by Deepcar Autobodies here in the UK.

Our worst fears were confirmed with the rear panels being utterly rotten. Due to this and rust all over the front end a restore of the original 1990 built car simply isn't viable so we'll be going with a rebuilt on a new clean 1991 shell which I have which interestingly started life as a Mazdaspeed Spec B 1.6 supercharged.

I saved the Hayashi from an ebay breaker and i saved the Spec B from a breaker too so it could be said that i have given two awesome cars a chance of a new life.

I soul searched for a long time about whether or not to stay with the original Jack Hayashi built car but, the way i see it, Jack's artistry is in the kit he designed and fabricated not in the base car he put it onto.

I'll try to post up info from time to time (progress is likely to be gradual) but i have also started a facebook page for the restore
>> here (https://www.facebook.com/Hayashi-Roadster-Restoration-207644336245086/?notif_t=page_fan). <<

Here's what we are dealing with behind the rear arches ....

I hope you do a better job sealing the rear up than the original appliers did.

It is, of course, a shame that the original car is too far gone to refresh.

Good luck and keep us posted, please.

Ok so, thought i'd dig this thread up from its grave ...........

So, a change of plan for the Hayashi rebuild.... massive decision reached today that my newly acquired Supercharged S Special will be the donor car. Not only will this be an awesome car, befitting of the Hayashi shell, but it will mean much less "build" and will throw off a lot of hoarded JDM booty to help fund the dream :D

Currently in talks with "Painter Dave" of #DeepcarAutobodies here in the UK to book in the build :P

This is the kind of look we'll now be heading for - minus the holy grail bits...the Hayashi headlights and door mirrors.... it will however be rocking a GV bonnet, twin naca duct headlight covers over RS active headlights and possibly Vitaloni mirrors also the livery will be close to the original promo car PZ Black.
