In the pic above you can see additional stripper needed on the inside of the wheel.

Too much time invested, now to pick a stain; piano black or clear?

clear. If you want a black wheel, why buy a wood one?

Because a black, wooden wheel is awesome!

I would say clear and polish the spokes. I'm with grumpy, if you want a black wheel, buy a black wheel.

Clear or else its pointless to do all that extra work.

I have a few different steering wheels hanging around, but this is the first one that I have actually refinished.....

I think the wood needs to be slightly darker, but not black. And don't touch the spokes. Well clean them if necessary (duh) but don't try to polish them.

Thanks guys, yes it is an interesting look, I have been practicing applying clear coat to a flat surface then turning it upside down, and on its side, because a steering has no flat surface and I do not want any runs, drips or errors. Looks like I will have 5 or more coats to get a good thick covering on the wheel itself, I may start the first coat tonight then let it sit under a low energy UV-A Lamp to cure.

Looks awesome! Thank goodness you went with the stain you picked as opposed to black. Who in their right mind would suggest that?
