Is it possible to have a roll bar converted into a cage? I plan on getting a bar soon but long term I want a cage so Im wondering if I should just hold out for one or not.

Caoboy
01-08-2012, 11:10 PM
Easily done. However, if that is your route, I'd suggest going to a cage fabricator (such as Moti at BlackbirdFabworks) and getting a back half of a cage done. That way, it will be easier to design/mate the front section.

Yes it is possible, however, it generally makes less sense because your starting point will be compromised and heavier.
There are significant differences between the specs and installations of roll bars and cages, with cages being lighter and having much stronger ties to the chassis (assuming weld-in, not bolt-in).

I do have a perfect solution for people in your position, a welded in 3/4 cage that is NASA legal for HPDE / TT (as well as other organizations), it is built as the rear half of a race legal cage (with some proprietary specs) plus the door bars that suit your needs.
This 3/4 cage is designed so it could easily be upgraded to a full cage in the future, legal for NASA / SCCA wheel to wheel racing (as well as other organizations).

Here are a couple examples that I've built, Lenny's car (AKA Urban) -

Black with leather cover and some stickers.

Now where was I? The important thing was, that I had an onion tied to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Oh, and now my bar looks like this.

I've been developing an offset rollbar that is a bit safer. By this I mean made from Steel not aluminium, and with a proper rear support leg that bolts securely through to the chassis of the car, not onto the parcel shelf.

Here's how its looking so far...
http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss345/vindi49/rollbar006.jpg

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss345/vindi49/rollbar004-1.jpg

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss345/vindi49/rollbar005-1.jpg

Obviously they aren't going to be as strong as a full Roll Bar, but I want a more retro look in the Wataru. For my green car however I'm hoping Moti can do me something a bit more serious!!

That's a really cool looking bar. One thing that Moti mentioned about that design bar is that it isn't great for tracking due to the potential for it to dig in in the case of a roll over.

Loving the full bolt together, Marlon. A Safety21 7 point cage came up for sale recently in NZ for extremely cheap but unfortunately I already have this. I cannot place the manufacture as many Japanese companies use this same design. I also have door bars for it which I have not yet installed.

Bump on this.

Anyone with a 99-00 with stock seats got pics of either a Boss Frog Clearview or HD M2 Sport? Curious about all-the-way-back seat clearance.

I have the M2 sport in mine and when I had the stock seats, my head was above the top of the seat. If the seat was all the way back and I sat properly, I am sure my head would touch.

That's what worries me. I'm 6'1", though I've cut quite a bit of foam out of the seat, I don't know if I can find a bar that'll fit under a soft top that won't brain me if I get hit from the side or the rear.

You have 99-00 seats in your Laser Blue? I thought NB2 seats sit eay up on the head?

Long story short, the car's original owner put 99-00 seats in the car when he sold it to replace the Mazdaspeed seats that he'd had previously.

Honestly, you'd probably get the most enjoyment and least amont of stress out of the M2 sport.

I had one in my 2000, and if there was a way for my head to make contact with the bar, I would have had much worse problems to deal with. Full seat travel and recline, HT and glass top compatible. It really is a great daily driver choice. I regret selling mine, but thought I wanted something else.

Bryan

My problem is how "full recline" is defined: yes, I can recline the seat all the way, but that does me no good if I am now surrounded by the main hoop on the side and top and rear upright behind me.

The Sport and Hard Bar are front runners right now. I wish I had a car with a BFW bar to try out, because Moti knows his stuff.

But with the seat all the way back, you do sit slightly under the bar. It sounds like that is the case with Bryan.

Demon I Am

Not on the Sport. There was no way to get the seat back that far, without sliding the butt most of the way forward. You'd have to have stumpy legs, and an extremely long torso to ride like that

Well, this was from my observation when I had my 99 seats in. If I even readjusted my seating position and went upward, my head hit the bar.

Ah, I don't think I've ever sat in 99-00 seats. I had the MSMs from the beginning.

Yeah, the 99 seat backs are way lower than the surfboards in the NB2.

Bryan, have you looked at the HD Ace? It's lower and farther back than the "normal" HD roll bars. It might block you rear view, though, since you kinda tall.

What worries me about the Ace is that it's not tall enough because it's too far back.

That's the compromise you have to deal with though. You can't have both, AND keep a top on the car.

Bryan,

I have an M2 HCDD in my '92. I just bought a set of NB2 seats out of a Shinsen. I did so because the seats are more comfortable than the NB1 seats and the backs are higher. I am 6'. At full recline, they will likely hit the diagonals, all the other seat I have used did, including on the 10ae with stock seats. If you are looking for protection and visibility, you may need to just go with a single hoop sport bar. From there, I would look into ta foam and wrap. I remember in JDM pictures, enthusiasts in Japan were using something to wrap foam on their bars that looks seamless and sort of artistic. Some foam is better than none and whiplash protection is the biggest aid from getting injured.

The more I've actually tried measuring things out, the more the BF Clearview Maxx looks like my best bet. It's got the height above the package shelf + being leaned back away from my head. That's pretty nice.

I sent a message to Moti, though, to see if I can get measurements for one of his bars. I doubt it'll fit me, though.

Just fyi, Moti didn't want to give me measurements when i asked before when roll bar shopping. I just wanted the measurements from the parcel shelf to top of bar and from bar to the windshield. The measurements was also to help determine what seats would work best.

I wanted to go with Blackbird Fabworx, and may still, but Moti won't sell me a unfinished bar or have it powder coated clear like i want. Not sure why and it is his right but that may honestly cost him my business. On the other hand Moti was very quick to respond to emails and even called me per my request so I'd definitely recommend him.

I'm still leaning towards a double hoop...i dunno.

Even though it said that HT will not fit over it, there are reports that HT fits but is tight. :)
Guess it depends also on which HT. :p

Hardtop fit doesn't really matter to me, honestly. I'm just worried about headroom and height.

For the record, the Single Diagonal bar from Moti, according to him breaks down to 26.25" from the center of the windshield header to the front of the bar and 18.875" to the top of the bar from the package shelf.

Nice.

How's it deal with the stock seatbelts?

I'll have to get you pics. tomorrow. But the only issue I have is that I'm lazy and haven't ordered new 'stops' for the latch on my belt after doing the rip-stop removal. (see the DIY thread where Randy explains it in detail.) Other than that they work fine. And I don't see the OEM / DOT approved belt conflicting with a full harness that will be installed soon, hopefully.

Thanks for the question! Hope I help to clarify.

Do you feed the belt through the side holes?

Do you feed the belt through the side holes?

I fed the outer belt lower mount through the side hole. It's tight to get the 17mm bolt started and torqued but skinny hands prevail.

The buckle side is bolted to the seat frame and is level with the top of the seat. When I first mounted that side I over thought it. Chad had the right idea with just a nut that fits the OEM buckle mount. That way the buckle is the same place every time you go to plug it in.

HTH and I'll try to snap some shots tomorrow because a pic. ....
