It's been years since I have had a vehicle tested in NC. In fact, I don't recall the OBD2 proceedure.

If a car has a CEL that comes and goes, will it pass with the CEL light off? Both of my cars have intermittent CELs that come and go without clearing the code, so they both go long stretches of time before it comes on again.

They hook a code reader to it, regardless, IIRC. if it brings back a code, they'll fail you. Also, they make you wait, if you do an ECU reset. I guess you just have to go in and hope. I have not had an OBD2 car in many years though

OK, so any code regardless of the CEL being on or not = fail, correct?

From what I remember, correct. Does the code show up in the system when the light is not on?

Tony is correct. But if your cell comes and goes. You can try and reset it. Calculate a 50 mile road trip and if no cell comes on get it inspected before it comes back on.

Thanks! Shelled out some $$ for a scanner. Getting a p1170. It either the O2, purge valve, or just needs a tune up. I bought parts for a mild tune up (plugs wires, fuel filter and OEM style O2.

I will see if that helps, if not I will try the purge valve and swap in the spare coils I have.

I have the o2 from the 1.8 exhaust if you need it. Not sure of its condition

Thanks, but I think the CA model is a little different.

hey, did you solve the P1170 CEL?
I'm having trouble with it now, 2005 manual NB.
Can't make it go away - replaced and cleaned tons of stuff already..
Thanks.

Yes, but probably not how you might need to do it ('99 and '05 NBs are different beasts).

If you start another thread, I can help you there! :) List what you changed and did to combat the problem, too!
