Painted sidewall letters?

I've seen this on a few cars.. my ZIIs arrive tomorrow, and I want to paint the letters for a vintage look. Two questions:
How have you done this in the past?
Would yellow or white look better on a red car (with gold wheels)?

I painted my tire letters awhile back with a "white paint marker" I got for cheap from Amazon. Looked like this:

Looked great at first, but as the miles passed, the paint would flake off and/or yellow. I think it's because the tires keep expanding and contracting while driving, the paint is being stretched, thus falling off. But hey, what do you expect from using a paint marker that costs less than $2?
