Jen must be craving Chick Fil A.

JK. I'm down to go either way as well. I am off Thursday and Friday so I want to do something.

next week is better for me.

Muhahata
01-08-2014, 01:16 AM
Chickfila was all your idea, lol.

I could take it or leave it. If you want to wait til "warmer" weather that's fine..... Ha

tsingson
01-08-2014, 09:23 AM
Let's go ahead and swing it next week. Then we can see if we can generate more interest.

What's your availability people?

tsingson
01-12-2014, 05:56 PM
No interest in a meet this week?

Muhahata
01-13-2014, 12:28 AM
I guess no one wanted to come out in the cold after all.

Perhaps next Friday night?

tsingson
01-13-2014, 06:27 AM
I should still be in town. I might leave for VA on Friday but I haven't decided yet.

I still need to give you the windblocker, Jen.

01-14-2014, 07:29 AM
Where can we meet up at?

JLBMX5
01-14-2014, 05:57 PM
Since nobody is saying where. Let's meet at the mall. Park at parking deck then we can walk in to tons of food to select from :). its gonna be cold at 7 pm so I'm not one to want to hang out outside .

Muhahata
01-14-2014, 06:57 PM
Lol, what mall?

JLBMX5
01-14-2014, 08:04 PM
I don't know the name of the mall but i would think same one we met at before. other guys know the name of the mall.

tsingson
01-14-2014, 09:17 PM
I believe he's referring to Crabtree.

Pyr0monk3y
01-14-2014, 10:05 PM
I'm a maybe. I'm supposed to work Saturday, might stay late Friday so I don't have to.

Muhahata
01-15-2014, 05:05 AM
We could try to meet at the mall on Friday night, anyone know which deck isn't as busy?

tsingson
01-15-2014, 07:43 AM
I know if we park in the back of deck of the food court, it shouldn't be so bad. Anybody have any other suggestions on places to meet as well just so we can alternatives?

tsingson
01-16-2014, 10:38 AM
I will not be around on Friday. I am leaving for VA early. Sorry guys. I should be at the next one.

good call.

So, I've been dicking around on the NC personal plate site today, and was overly tickled that the plate "HAIRDRSR" is available. It would be pretty epic on a Miata. :P

Muhahata
01-17-2014, 08:44 AM
So what's the plan? This still happening?

Muhahata
01-17-2014, 01:28 PM
So what's the plan? This still happening?

I'm making plans.

Top floor of parking deck on southwest side of mall boardering macys and belks.
There is a deck access road at Crabtree valley ave. I scouted it earlier and the other parking decks there are terrible for lowered cars. This access road put you one floor ramp away from the top and only has one bad ramp crest.

Not sure if anyone ha those kinds of problems... I have them with my other car but not the miata yet.

LMK. If anyone has issues.
Also email me if you can't find
the location.

Sorry, Jen!

Stuff popped up yesterday I had to take care of!

A group text on the day of the meet would work well. That will make it much easier to predict attendance or make last minute changes to location, time, etc.

I have a study group that uses this: https://groupme.com/

It's a third party app for group text messaging so we don't all have to exchange numbers, you just create an account or sign in with facebook.

C&C Raleigh was a good turn out. Miatas not so much, but I was surprised how many cars were there given the weather.

Met Jen and Jamie H there. Jamie has one of THE_NICEST black/tan NAs I have seen, even compared to the ones on the west coast! Great meeting you guys there! Tagged a few other Miatas I saw I didn't recognize.

Cool!

I remember you driving in, I was talking to another Miata owner at the time. Where do you compete? Any particular organization you belong to? A few of us are experienced track enthusiasts and race junkies. Do you have a specific class or plans in the future? I was heavily involved in the Miata race community on the west coast. Unfortunately I haven't had much time for that here yet outside of an occasional HPDE.

Haven't raced anything outside of Chump. It's vaguely prepped between Solo CSP and NASA PTE/PTD. No immediate plans to race it yet, but there are about half a dozen people in RTP who are looking at taking over the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast PTE scene.

If you come out to a THSCC autocross, I'm one of the two guys who do the worker assignments. I'll be at all of the THSCC HPDEs as well.

kung fu jesus
02-04-2014, 03:36 PM
I may do that! I ran a few events with THSCC back in the late '90s when I lived in Richmond for a short time. I worked with 949 Racing leading up to and including their T25 efforts in '11 and '12. Used to participate in the Miata Challenge out there, too. I have trying to persuade Emilio to consider expanding that series and the Super Miata series out here on the east coast. Another RDU enthusiast, Andy (pyro monkey) practically lives out at VIR with his family competing in HPDEs and other events there. He has a grey NA with matching hardtop. I am slowly building another Miata, an NB this time, with plans to do PTE or PTD. Not sure how far out that will be, but the events I can make help keep the dream alive. :)

Early through mid 90's, I did some SCCA ITA regionals, rally-x, autocross and even a little ice racing. Life gets in the way sometimes, but it is still something I enjoy very much.

Muhahata
02-04-2014, 11:37 PM
In all seriousness.... Why do you put a "untitled" do not touch sign on your car?

Had a bad prior experience?

DK AFFECT
02-05-2014, 03:26 PM
It was a joke because the car looks like shit and I printed it off from notepad.

You see jokes are hilarious when you have to explain every little detail and explain the definition of irony of bringing a semi-prepped car that is used as a track beater to an event like C&C.

tsingson
02-05-2014, 03:42 PM
Never been to C&C. Doesn't sound like much fun either.

JLBMX5
02-05-2014, 03:51 PM
I've been once and the time that I went a big race event was going on so only three Miatas showed up to C&C. I did not know anyone there so after walking around looking at cars a couple of times it got pretty boring so I left.

Muhahata
02-05-2014, 05:40 PM
I guess I missed the irony in the joke when you became all defensive on here, unless that was irony too?

Not as funny now...

Never been to C&C. Doesn't sound like much fun either.

C&C isn't a do or die meet for me. The ones in larger cities or car-centric areas, like SOCAL, they can be amaaaaaazing. Went to a few in Irvine, and I would see rare cars I have only seen in books. There is a degree of snobbery, but I ignore it. I only parked my NA in there twice after I was waved in. I wasn't going to, originally, both times. One of the best times at the Irvine C&C was a small group of us took our Miatas and 949's Crusher to it, about a month or two after the T25 victory. People were really responsive and asked a lot of questions. Sometimes, to me, the cars that didn't park in the main lot were better to look at because they were driven more than than they sat.

Still, there are always douchebags at any car-related meet. The recent misfortunes at the Charlotte C&C caused the organizer to shut it down. It's frustrating.

Miata-wise, KINOD, SOCM and P5 meets were always more fun because you got to hang with people who share your interests in the same cars. You actually learn something and make friends to go do events, like private HPDEs you would not have otherwise known about. maybe you get to be a part of a team, like the opportunity afforded me through 949. All happened through car meets.

Pyr0monk3y
02-06-2014, 12:34 PM
It seems like the worse the weather conditions are, the better C&C gets. The bad weather scares away all the rowdy teenagers and rich people with garage queens.

What we need is an event closer to raleigh, it sucks to have to drive to cary and I know some people with nice cars that don't attend regularly because of the drive. A raleigh C&C needs to happen again.

JamieH
02-06-2014, 07:15 PM
I'd take a 20 minute drive to go to something like C&C every month in a heartbeat. Most similar thing I have to that is a local cruise-in which has nearly the same turn out of nearly the same cars every month. And it's mostly just 50's and 60's American cars driven by the same people in their 50's or older. Don't get me wrong, some of them have some really nice cars. But like I said, same bunch of people with the same cars.

JamieH
02-06-2014, 08:01 PM
Oh, here's some pictures from C&C. (http://imgur.com/a/mw0MO?gallery#0) Probably the car I liked most was the "rat" rod.

DK AFFECT
02-07-2014, 01:10 PM
I like the 350Z with the Rays, Bride bucket, and automagic transmission.

I think the next C&C I'll be able to attend might be May since March 1 is an autocross/circuitcross at NC CAR and April 5-6 is VIR-N.

FYI...checked out that hardtop with the smashed window this morning. A bit too much damage to the FRP for my liking, definitely a race car part, to suit requirements.

Anyways, the guy is younger, his name is Jeremy. Nice talking to him. He is currently parting a '94 black and tan (engine gone) and that silver '93. He said it his 8th Miata he has parted out, he had a few other vehicles he was also breaking apart. If you think you might need something, call or text him at 910-547-0753

I am bringing a plastic storage bin of random NA parts to the meet. These are extra bolts, fasteners, engine parts, electronics, interior bits, etc. The entire lot is free to whomever, but you take the whole bin (included). Some parts were spares I took from wrecks, like an entire fuse block from the engine compartment...those SOB fuses that rarely go bad, but when they do cost $15 at the dealer. No picking through for just one part, you see something you need you take it all. Just want it gone.

This event seems much more professional in the way it is being managed. They have concessions and actual support from the surrounding businesses rather than disputes about taking up too many parking spaces.

They have a pretty well organized website:

http://candcraleigh.com/

It might be interesting to see what the police presence will be like. The district station is less than a mile down the road. At C&C cary there's usually a couple Cary PD cars circling the area trying to catch people peeling out.

There's a screw loose between the wheel and seat.

Oh, and the seat belt mounting bolts. Driving without seat belts is mighty bad.

I bought some uncut seat belt tower covers last night. Tried out some tan colors with the blue carpet, the only one that looked good was the 2000-2001. Don't want a 2000 dash though, so I'll stick with black.

Today, I finished my aerodramatics door handles. I also went to the sign shop and bought an 8' section of seaboard. Seaboard is a PVC based plastic sheeting, which is super easy to cut, with a sharp blade. This scrap piece was just the right width to make door cards. I'm planning on eliminating the speaker holes, for now. I can always cut them out later. I have one finished, minus drilling out the keyways for the pop clips/door handle. Eventually, I'll cover them with fabric of some type.

This is the route I propose we take.

https://goo.gl/maps/nTxaU

Let me know if the link does not work. The new google maps is buggy.

The route is as follows:

Leesville> Right on Norwood> Left on Victory Church (becomes Kemp road)> Left on Virgil> Left on Carpenter Pond> Left on Coley> Right on Hwy 98> Left on Ghoston> Left on New Light> Left on Old Weaver> Right on Beaver Dam> Left on Bruce Garner> Right on Lawrence (becomes Magnum Dairy)> Right on Purnell> Left on New light (becomes Six Forks)> Right on Pleasant Union Church (becomes Mt Vernon Church)> Right on Norwood> Left on Leesville and return to the same parking lot.

Depending on traffic, LEO, and cyclists the leader might want to switch it up.

Hey everyone,

I've officially joined the forum, and I've got a handful of those business cards I can chuck into people's windows at stoplights.

A little introduction: this Miata ('95 red, entirely stock right now) is my first Miata, I bought it on MLK day this year, so it's been just over two months. Made money on the transaction selling a more recent Eclipse for it and as far as I'm concerned I got a lot more car in the transaction as well. With a good set of instructions, I'm fairly handy re: repairs and maintenance but I have very little experience/knowledge. I'd like to slowly transition it into a track going car- so prepare for many questions/please offer any general advice on that end. Right now my DD is either the miata or my SV650 depending on the weather/passenger needs.

On myself: I graduate from law school here at UNC in May. I'll be in town over the summer studying for the Bar and take that at the end of July. My expertise/specialization has been in criminal procedure and criminal defense, I'm a big "public servant/help the people" kinda guy, and I grew up in NC so I can see myself ending up in a public defender's office somewhere in the state.

Anyhow, shout out to the guys that met me on Saturday for the ride. I appreciate you being welcome to a total noob and I look forward to hanging out more and meeting the rest of the cohort some time.

Belal

Was that you or your brother?

Also, hi to everyone I met at the last Raleigh c&c, I really enjoyed the drive that afternoon with you guys. Hope I didn't go too slow for you. Haha. Got an alignment done at PC last Friday as well as some azenis mounted. Totally different car. Itching to get out and do some driving, I like the route pyro, should be a lot of fun. Anyone going to charity laps this Friday?

I'm heading to the charity laps for sure. It's supposed to rain, I don't know if they'd cancel the event if it rains, but if they do I'd still like to go karting haha.

The track didn't look bad, but that Oak tree corner sure is depressing.

I don't think they would cancel, they would certainly slow the pace down to a crawl though. If you go off on wet grass, you don't stop till you hit something. On a positive note, the new track is a lot easier to drive when wet. There are no patches and drainage has been improved drastically.

I might be making a trip to Greensboro, NC in the next few weeks. A trip that includes a one way flight.

My schedule will be pretty open when I'm down there but I'm not sure what days I'll actually be there yet. Either a weekend or something like a Saturday to Tuesday. I really only need to spend a day or less in Greensboro and need to waste some time before heading home, either in NC or elsewhere so I might be able to meet up with some of you guys.

I'll know for sure if this trip is happening by Wednesday.

Also, completely random question that isn't related to my trip :ninja:, does NC have temporary vehicle registrations? For example, if you buy a car and just need temporary tags to drive it around, for say, moving it out of the state.. I know NJ I got a 14 day permit and in Cali I got to keep the previous owner's plates since they were still valid. How's it work in NC?

kung fu jesus
03-28-2014, 08:51 PM
Good question. The plates offices are a little convoluted here, maybe someone here more familiar can shed light on this. FWIW, I live down the street from the DMV HQ here in Raleigh. Also on a tangent, there are a lot of Canadians living in the RDU area. One of my good friends here hails from the Toronto area.

Yea, I just need to find a way to get back home without getting pulled over an excessive amount of times. 0 times would be ideal. But I'm not about to pay taxes in NC, at the border, and in Ontario. But I also don't want to be doing multiple flights to NC since that'll get expensive too.

JamieH
03-28-2014, 09:22 PM
Yeah, we've got 30 day tags. If memory serves, you have to apply for them in person at a DMV office. I'm unsure what all paperwork is required. Best to check your State's DMV site for a solution as well.

But yeah, it can be a PITA to get something done at the DMV in NC. It's not uncommon to go to one office and be told one thing while going to another and being told something different on the same issue. Probably one of the most difficult things to do is file for a lost title depending on the situation. Sometimes you have to get up with the last owner of the vehicle. Which can be incredible difficult sometimes. If they're deceased you have to deal with relatives. And then you're hoping there's no liens or anything. Horror stories abound.

But we do have some lax registration and inspection laws depending on the vehicle's age. 35 and older, no safety inspection required. '95 and earlier, only a visual inspection. Some counties are even more lax. There's absolutely no smog checks. At the most is OBDII checks. No front plate requirement, no windshield inspection stickers.

psulja
03-28-2014, 09:24 PM
The car is a 2004 and it'll be in NC for a day or two after I make the deal. The rest of my time away from home, not able to register it, will be driving back to Detroit where the car will sit until its been 48 hours since I purchased it and am allowed to export it to Canada.

JamieH
03-28-2014, 09:38 PM
Well, could always do the sketchy thing and use plates from another vehicle of yours to get it home and hope you don't get pulled over. At the very least having it insured will give you some leeway if you do get pulled over depending on the mood of the officer.

I think for the temp NC tags you'll need proof of insurance, proof of sale, and proof of ownership. Beyond that, I couldn't tell you and I've lived here most of my life.

kung fu jesus
03-28-2014, 09:40 PM
Paul, read through the NC DMV site. I don't know the specifics, but I don't recall the tax situation, only the registration. I usually did all my stuff at the DMV HQ because it was close and one stop shopping, so to speak. The best route to Detroit is 77 straight to Cleveland, then head west. It is about 9-10 hours from Charlotte to Detroit. VA vrs OH is the conundrum. I can't decide which state has the more annoying patrols. I lean towards VA being worse.

The other route would be 40 west to Knoxville then straight up 75. Spring is finally here, so the mountains shouldn't be an issue. Could you use your Ontario tags to get you to MI? Not sure the registration reqs for Canada or if American police know how to check them, but that time puts you squarely in Spring Break travel times when Canadian plates are pretty common on the freeways around here.

I will have the title signed over to me, proof of insurance, and a bill of sale. My concern with the paying double tax thing is, if NC sees that I purchased the car there they might try to charge me tax on the purchase which, if I can avoid, I will. I'd rather spend that $600+ on something else, especially since after the exchange rate the car will end up costing me $2000 more than what it is posted for.

It might even be worth doing 2 trips for the car with how cheap flights are into Greensboro. First trip to purchase the car or pay for a good chunk of it and get the title, come back, do all my paper work, fly out with ON tags for the car and drive it back home.

I wish this entire process could be simpler really.

JamieH

From looking online, I think you are looking at a 3% NC tax. Which would be based on a bill of sale between private parties, I think.

Depending on the value of the car, it may be cheaper to make 2 trips like you're saying.

It would be within a week I would suspect. At 3% I'd be paying NC $600 for no benefit to myself when I could pay $400-500 on air fare that would allow me to register the car in Ontario and drive it back hassle free.

I might take you up on that offer if I do end up getting the car.

Most tech inspection doesn't care what kind of roll-bar you have, they just look to make sure you have one. The more anal groups like NASA might check, but as long as you've got straight down tubes and a diagonal, they will probably call it good.

I have confidence in the bent down tubes of some bars, but every roll cage design rule book includes a bit about never trusting the strength of the material, and relying on the strength of the geometry instead. Hence, if someone bothers to look, you will probably fail tech.

Anyway, IIRC, the sport bar has straight down tubes and optional diagonals.

LOL, not the VIR club. My brother took an S2K with NO ROLLBAR on the track once. Yea, I know, it was dumb. He handed the club director a tech form and they let him on the track.

Every organization I have run with makes you fill out and sign a tech inspection form. It must be signed by a "professional mechanic". If you hand them that signed form, they never lay eyes on your car. Even big names like Chin Motorsports are like this.

I'm not gunning at you (you've been gunned at enough) and I'm not recommending that anyone tracks a car that wont pass tech. I just want to make it clear that track days are more dangerous than some give them credit for. Sure, that miata that passed you has a tech sticker, but are his ball joints really without play?

Some of you are aware, but most are not, that Cars & Coffee- Cary has been organized by one person. I routinely post as "we" because there was another person who was involved. Unfortunately he has been MIA for the past several months. Organizing C&C has been entirely volunteer and I do so in addition to working 50-60 hours per week and spending time with my now 7 month old son. Any money spent has been out of our own pockets.

I have repeatedly posted the guidelines for attending Cars & Coffee - Cary and asked the collective group to help remind those they see not in compliance to respect the host, Waverly Place. As one person I simply cannot be in all places at once and, quite frankly, am tired of being argued with about parking. This weekend I even had to stop somebody from parking in the reserved spaces... as they were maneuvering to avoid the "NO EVENT PARKING" sign.

Today I received an email from Waverly Place property management. The following is a copy and paste of the entire body:

"Hi Chris,

I hope that you are well.

I am reaching out this morning because of complaints that I received from tenants about this past weekend's Cars and Coffee. I was informed of a photo shoot with a scantily clad girl in front of our children's store, and engine revving, and parking in no-parking areas.....in general a lot of problems.

In the past we have gone out of our way to provide onsite security, etc. for this event, but we cannot continue to do this unless the event is sponsored, or paying the property at some level. It's too much of a liability, and requires too much staffing. While many car owners are polite and very kind about being onsite, many others are incredibly rude to our tenants, and cause unsafe situations in our parking lot.

Unless we turn this into a registered event that can be controlled from a safety perspective and the costs of doing so can be covered, we cannot continue to host the club at Waverly Place.

Please let me know if you would like to get together to discuss turning this into a legitimate event. If it remains a club without rules that can be enforced from your end, we cannot host it. It's far too dangerous.

Thank you,"

I am officially announcing the end of Cars & Coffee - Cary as we know it. If you are one of the people responsible for the actions mentioned in the email from Waverly's management you owe them, the businesses of Waverly and the group of car enthusiasts who like to attend a huge apology. If you witnessed one of these acts and did nothing, you owe the group an apology.

The following are the options for our event moving forward:

1. The event ceases to exist. This would be the second time in as many years the event has been kicked out of their location and we could only hope the new event in Raleigh does not suffer the same fate for the same reasons.

2. I am happy to continue to work toward making the event the best it can be... but not alone. Organization will require several volunteers and changes will have to be made. In order for this to be possible in time for the May event I need people to step up quickly so that decisions can be made.

3. Someone else can take over responsibility and attempt to improve or relocate the event.

When we talked to the dude a couple months ago before handing out fliers, he seemed exhausted, as if he was silently begging for someone to take over. Anyway, I think the Raleigh event will do very well. The location is bigger and less complicated since there are no tenants to upset. The theater is welcoming us graciously.

It would have been cool if he had avoided, or edited out the street light. Andy, Jenn, & I stayed behind for about 20-30 or so minutes. You missed Hondapalooza, and the TV Mayne! :D Sonic got loud and ugly.

By the time we got to KK, there were only a few other folks hanging out, which was nice and quiet. We went for a cruise around downtown, then parked up on Hillsboro St for an hour or so.

Seriously though, it's a bit far and early for me. And unfortunately, I know what m.net's definition of swift is.

When is our next meet? It's been a while.

Been trying to set something up nobody has responded. You guys let me know when you are available to do something. I pulled the top off today and it's hanging in the garage. I am going to keep messing with my camera and get footage. I need to find a good, free video editing software.

Windows Movie Maker? Didn't seem like it wanted to play the video in HD.

Pyr0monk3y

Windows movie maker will work. Honestly, there's not many decent free video editing programs. Wax 2.0 is ok, but not for the faint of heart.

In movie maker, add your clips 'n junk

http://i.imgur.com/MSaoG1el.png (http://imgur.com/MSaoG1e.png)

Then hit save movie, for HD display

http://i.imgur.com/kbyTIDgl.png (http://imgur.com/kbyTIDg.png)

It should let you name the file and choose a location for it. Then it will render. Unless you have a decent CPU, you're going to wait a while. Video encoding is no joke. Make sure your PC has adequate cooling.

If you want to go hard, and can find a license, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects are top notch. Sony Vegas is where I started, I think it is slightly easier to learn, but not quite as capable. Adobe also has much better support for GPU rendering, so that's where I am now.

I'd like to go to C&C in Raleigh again, sure. I just need to make sure it doesn't get cancelled and only find out after I get there, again. What's the weather looking like Sat.?

tsingson
05-12-2014, 10:08 PM
Jamie, if it gets cancelled again, let's have a plan B like we discussed last time. Maybe meet at Crabtree Mall at the Food Court entrance in the upper lot or maybe crash Tony's work parking lot :teehee:. Either way, we should have a plan B.

Wood, I am going to try and wait until early next year for the brakes if I can so I can hit everything all at once.

Aye, a plan B would smart. Meeting in the upper lot by the food court at Crabtree is fine. I'm up for what ever... except buttsecks or pole smoking. You guys know the area better than I do, so y'all should have some idea of the best places to meet or things to do.

Heh, what about cruising from place to place checking out used Miatas for sale? I just got this funny picture in my head of what the reaction would be when they see a small caravan of Miatas roll up to look at a Miata.

I do not know what kind of bar you have. But when I did my bar tony had his plastic bits out of his car at the time and I used one of his as a template to cut mine. It allowed me to put my two seat belt plastic covers on without cutting it in half. Tony do you still have that or did you hack them up to make new ones fit ?
