View Full Version : Miata Metal Window Cranks

Are there any REASONABLY priced window crank options out there? Preferably metal? I hate the plastic factory ones and I've tried a few other options that just didn't work. I purchased some universal window cranks from ebay that didn't fit. I had to modify them to slide on the gear but the problem was they are cheap Chinese aluminum and are about 4 parts held together by Allen head screws that just wont stay tight. I also tried a nice looking retro styled one from O'reillys but that wouldn't fit on the gear either.

Any ideas?

there was a guy on ebay selling metal cranks that looked similar to the originals but I can't find it at the moment. I'll keep looking.

I think (Frank) medition was working on making a metal version for the miatas?

Not quite, so let me elaborate.

I wanted the 1028 cranks, so I contacted RetroModern, a forum sponsor, to see if he could make identical ones, or reasonably accurate facsimiles. In the end, he said he could not. He offered to sell the CAD drawings to me so that I could have them done, but since I am not interested in becoming a manufacturer, I declined. I think there is a market for them, but I don't know to what degree. So, only if someone wants to contact RM and take on this challenge/task will we see the fruits of my inquiry/effort.

What about Club NA? May be he can do a group buy of the polished winders. If so, I would prob get in for a set.
Nakamae sells them too. May be a GB through him?
Those are two options that I would be interested in. :)

I think the price they would charge us would make a group buy extremely small.

Maybe Bill @ MiataRoadster can explore that option as well?

That's beautiful. I had looked at the nakame ones and I think garage vary? But they were like $200-$300. And that's just an asinine amount of money for window cranks. At least for me.

I never completed adding all Nakamae products to my store.

In response to this thread, I'm looking into what if any discount I could arrange for a group buy, so hang tight and watch this thread for an update...

Bill, if you do a nakamae window crank group buy, I am in.

I checked and he said even with a bunch of orders, there's not enough margin for him to give a break.
I'm getting a quote from my shifter kit machine shop. The only technical challenge I foresee is the splines for the shaft.

Can those of you who are interested let me know your desires:

1) Do people want winders that are replicas of the M-2 Corp. design? (If so, I'd need someone who has original ones to loan me one). Or would an original design be OK? (I'd seek feedback on an original design before taking orders).

2) Would it be OK for the knob to be black Delrin or would you want it to be aluminum, like the winder arm?

Thanks,

Bill

What's your price on the nakamae handles anyway?

If you make some, I would like to see the M2 corp version, black Delrin handle. I'm not sure where you would get a broach for that spline pattern.

what if you did a separate insert for the spline area made from delrin or something?

i'll confirm the pair price and post up.
The broach is no problem it's the unit cost of a low quantity production run.

Yeah I love the M2 design and I think the black delrin knob would work great.

I've used these guys in the past:

http://www.pioneerbroach.com

I would have my machine shop leave round holes in the back sides then take the parts to get broached before polishing the front sides.

All I need to proceed is for someone to loan me their rare original M2 Corp. winder...

I'm assuming that the originals were cast (i.e. weak) like the original door handles. So the new billet ones would be superior.

I just ordered a set of nakamaes from rev9 as part of a larger purchase. I think with a slght mod they could be made like the 1028 version in the pics. If you want to borrow them to model let me know

Does anyone have an authentic M2C winder that I can borrow for reference?
I'd work something out with whoever helps to make it worth your while.

Just FYI.
Here is the RS Factory Stage aluminum window regulator handle (http://page15.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/t351239334) on Yahoo Japan, buy it now ¥27,931

For the record, I'm not one to make cheap(er) copies of classic products except in the cases of:

1) the product is no longer available (manufacturer discontinued it or went out of business)

2) the product is not available from the manufacturer in a desired material option (carbon fiber vs. FRP)

3) there's a critical flaw in the original version (fragile casting vs. strong billet, as is the case with these window cranks)

I thought I'd found a potential donor with good condition original M2 parts to loan me to help with this project.

But after sporadic communications since February, he apparently developed cold feet, so I have to consider that door closed and move on if we're going to do this within a reasonable time frame.

So, does anyone else have M2 door latches and/or winders that they're willing to entrust to me to quickly, carefully reverse engineer and promptly return to them?

Mike Satur did billet cranks:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070522054108/http://www.mikesatur.com/mx5/fx06.html

If you can get CAD drawings, Jass can make the part more cheaply than any Western supplier, because they are in Bulgaria.

As a dealer, I know Vlad (DBA Jass Performance) well. I'll see if he'd be interested in pursuing this.
