It was a while ago so I forget exactly what was used. It was a Porter Cable, Meguiar's 105, Menzurna's (forget which one exactly), and finished with Wolfgang sealer

Improper washing causes a lot of the hazing. Washing and drying with the right tools keeps the paint looking nice once it has been detailed.

I'm scared to use a powerful buffer. I have burned paint before. Any tips on how to avoid this other than practice. I really don't want to ruin another paint job.

Get a DA style buffer like the porter cable 7424. It's not as powerful as a rotary, and because it uses a duel orbital system it is almost impossible to burn the paint.

It's a lot easier to use for non-professionals and still provides good results.

Hey gang, the Junkman here. Allow me to be more descriptive about why the PC-7424XP is so safe for the novice detailer, when compared to the Flex-3401VRG or the rotary like the Makita that you saw in the videos posted by CeeJaayDM. A lot of people will suggest one of these 3 machines for a novice detailer to machine polishing and ONLY ONE should ever be used by a novice.

The Flex is technically a "dual-action" polisher. That is, it performs 2 different actions with its back plate. It oscillates, just as the PC-7424XP does. It also ROTATES, just as a rotary polisher does. That's why if you look at the specifications of the Flex, you'll see that it is rated at a orbital OPM of 3200-9600, and a rotary RPM of 160-480. That rotary RPM, combined with the forced OPM orbit is what gives the Flex more bite than the PC-7424XP. That is also why it is a true "dual-action" polisher.

The PC is a true "orbital" polisher. The orbital oscillation is the only action that it is designed to do. Because it oscillates in the manner that it does, it causes the back plate to rotate also. However, the rotation of the PC can be stopped if you apply enough pressure, which means that it is NOT a true, "dual-action" polisher. It has what is called a "Free Floating Spindle Assembly" (which I refer to in my videos as a "clutch like" action), which can be bogged down with pressure. The ability to bog down the effectiveness of the PC is what makes it so safe for a novice detailer, who with any other machine may do damage to their paint. There's no bogging down the Flex or a rotary. If you apply more pressure with the Flex, the forced rotation of the back plate will start cutting more substance off the car. That's what makes it more dangerous. If you apply pressure or move too slow with a rotary, you will burn the paint and wipe out your paint job.

Now hopefully, that wasn't too technical. If it was, just read each paragraph slowly a couple of times and allow it to sink in. After reading it a few times, it should start to make sense. :smug:

And now to stay with the theme of the thread, my car:

Hey, you would be surprised at what can be fixed. Look at this hood on my El Camino. I hadn't washed it for at least 2 years and it was scratched to hell and back. It even had those helicopter leaf things embedded into the clear coat. The car just sat under a tree for 2 years. I fixed half of the hood for a video series that I did.

It has 133,600 miles on it to date. Completely stock with a few visual modifications. I've replaced so much stuff on the car that it is like new (water pump, AC compressor and accompanying components, radiator, head gaskets, power steering pump and hoses, coolant tank, seat tracks, leather interior and the list goes on). She is definitely no garage queen. I drive her hard and put her up wet. I had a semi throw a retread and take out the front end of the car and had to build her back up from that fiasco.

My car's paint is horrible. I just ordered a PC and some basic supplies. A friend recommended poorboy's products so I bought this kit http://www.autogeek.net/popoprkit1.html Along with some EX-P.

I also have some klasse AIO, ONR, and some pinnacle souveran that my friend gave.

Cant wait, gonna practice on my toyota camry first before I attempt to take the swirls out of my car.

Poorboys 2.5 followed by 1.0. This is bare, no sealant, glaze, wax or anything on the paint.

On my hood there were some swirls which I still cant feel with my finger nail or hand in a bag, but they werent removed. Should I step up to a more agressive compound/pad to get them out? Or just leave them be for now until my next detail?

That depends on your expertise level. A more aggressive compound may remove the damage, or you may have to resort to a more advanced approach. Here are some videos of me removing one such scratch that a more aggressive compound did not remove. I am by no means advocating that you even remotely think about trying this, just showing you what a more advanced repair consist of.

My latest work, unfortunately I forgot to take a before picture. A friend got his hard top repainted by some dude in his garage. Job was horrible, covered in deep sanding marks

I did a 2 step correction, and as you can see, had to be extra careful as the window was lexan.

I was thinking about it, but noticed one of the holes was already developing a crack.

I was told "I gotta pick up a friend at the airport in 2 hours, just do the best you can in that time"...

I hate being rushed, but car wasn't so bad to begin with.
