Mazda has revealed online today a newly developed four-cylinder, 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine which will premiere in the upcoming next generation Mazda2.

The all-new Mazda2 / Demio will be out later this year and will be offered with a frugal inline-four 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine which meets Euro 6 emission standards. The motor benefits from a variable turbine geometry turbocharger with rotation sensor and has received a water-cooled intercooler built into the intake manifold to increase turbocharger efficiency and acceleration response.

Mazda's engineers have managed to lower mechanical resistance and improve combustion efficiency by installing water control valves and water jacket spaces in the engine cooling system. Featuring a 1,497cc displacement, the engine generates 105 PS (77 kW) at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) available between 1,500 rpm and 2,500 rpm.

Mazda says the next-gen Demio (JDM-spec) fitted with this engine will become the most economical diesel-powered model in Japan under the JC08 test mode cycle.

Looking at "old" diesel tuning-options, it wouldn't be far off expecting 130-140 hp with a good tune. That would be awesome in the 2!

Let's just keep that away from the MX-5, alright Mazda? :ninja:

Reading about the delays on the D for the Mazda 6, it appears it may not come here until the next gen. Australian D owners are having problems and Mazda is telling them to check the oil level quite frequently. It also appears Mazda can't get it to pass US emissions without urea injection. Based on Mazda's response, they want to get the D motors right before unleashing them Stateside. Sounds prudent.

From the circles I know, some people are seriously hoping the D motor fits in the ND chassis for endurance racing purposes.

Diesel 2? That's very interesting news. Sign me up for a test drive if/when we see them!

I have been speculating, mostly to myself, that the next 2 will get a Mazdaspeed treatment. Mazda talked up the Hakumi concept this year as a performance, luxury hatchback along the lines of the Mini Cooper or GTI. It makes sense, considering how big the Mazda 3 is becoming and associated costs.
