Anyone have a review on these cam gears and I would like to hear your thoughts about other adjustable gears.

I had a cheap set once, never got around to setting them though, and not sure what metal was used but they started to rust and corrode right away.

I would say make sure you are getting a quality part if you decide to go this route. And for what its worth unless you are running a built engine, turbo, or S/C you won't get much extra hp. On a stock motor you might see 1 or 2 hp gain if setup properly and tuned via dyno. Just my .02 cents.

HKS made some nice ones, and I think TODA, and Marhua still makes them, not too many others as these cars are now going over 20 -25 years, so support for this item is down.

If you are getting them just for aesthetics, I would worry about the material.

As part of a performance build, everything Phat said.

If I had to choose again, (and this is just me), I would go with one of these

Those Maruha look so beautiful, and probably worth every soul you have to pay for them

I installed a JUN adjustable cam gear on the intake cam of my B6. Not a flashy unit, it is a modified OE cam gear with a steel adjustable plate. I like the materials and the number of contacts that held it together. It is a stout m-fer.

Another vote for Toda. I've never been disappointed with anything of theirs.

The Jun part looks really cool... but... I'd want to have the Jun name stamped on it some place. I know that's really not a problem but I'f I'm going to pay the JDM tax and cut up my valve cover I'd want something to show for it.

I think AEM also make a set but I've not heard much about them. But honestly with cam gears so long as its well made and marked correctly I cant see much going wrong.

The cool thing about the JUN gear was the previous owner had no idea what brand it was. I knew just from the pictures he sent because I have seen them before in person many years prior. I got it for a steal.

Years ago I had a set of Steel HKS gears. The only problem I had with them is once they had been run on the car for sometime, they had a tendency to seize together making it difficult to change the cam timing again. When I say it was a long time ago, I mean before 1.8 Miatas even existed.

Has there been any improvements to the ease of adjustability? My newest motor will require a set.

I know thebluepotato had an issue with his purple aluminum HKS gears. Something about the face wearing where the bolts clamped down. Search the forums and you'll see some chatter about peoples concerns with them a few years ago. I'm not even sure HKS make these anymore given what happened to them and given how old the Miata is. You'll be looking for NOS or used. Beware many retailers supposedly offer them but don't really have them in stock.

Really, Toda are the best on the market and there is no need to buy others given the consequences of a part malfunction (see recent post about near catastrophe due to a cracked Fidanza). You apply a thin film of grease to the inner plate so it rotates smoothly when you loosen the bolts for adjustment. They work and look good and will last a long time without a problem. All that JDM engineering and quality does come at a price but how much does a new motor cost or even a simple tow bill?

Lol! I'm antsy to get it in the car. Been sitting for about 7 months like that in the garage.

Freedomgli-
I had some of the HKS ones on my 1.6 back in the day and I had a real bad problem with the toothed area wearing at an angle to the point it would shred the teeth of trimming belts. I'm guessing the metal was too soft.
