Inspired by history

First off, I don't currently have a Miata. I want one. I want one so bad I can taste it. I had one once, a NC, and regretted selling it the first nice day thereafter. When I traded it in, I thought,"it's only a car, and I don't use it like a Miata deserves." oops.

So the quest for a new Miata has begun. I've scoured craigslist. been dealing with flakes from all over the country, california, New Hampshire, Ohio, and all sorts of other places. Ideally in silver, or white, followed by Mariner Blue. Why silver or white? It would provide the best base for what I want to do.
Before any mods though, I plan on ensuring it's in top running shape, then the performance mods, and lastly the cosmetics, that will complete the look I have in my head.

My grandfather was the most influential person in my life. He's a very large part of why I am the way I am, My Honesty, Integrity, straightforwardness, all came from him. He also gave me my love of new technology, and respect/affinity for Firearms. He died in 2005 and I've wanted to do something to Honor him in some way ever since. I think an NA Miata set up the way I've got in my head will be just the ticket.

He served onboard the USS Ranger CV-4 during WWII. So I thought aircraft themed Miata. Yep it's been done before, any number of times. I have however a very specific design in mind. During the war, one of the major events for the Ranger was operation Torch, The invasion of North Africa. The Ranger lead the Naval attack on Casablanca. The Ranger's own flight squadron (not counting the additional groups onboard for the assault) was vf-41 and they flew Grumman f4fs at the time. I've found several pics of the planes from the squadron, in many different paint schemes. There was one specific to operation Torch however:

The aviation theme will extend to the cockpit. I will not however be painting the cockpit and maintenance areas green as in the planes. LOL!

Roll bar- possibly double hoop, possibly Blackbird Fabworx
Driver's seat- Considering Bride Exas III w/5pt Harness. Car will not be a DD but will be street driven frequently. some autox too!
KG works Cluster/ revlimiter warbird gauges
Revlimiter window switches (if applicable to car) and Hazard toggles
Considering replacing door panels w/ aluminum, but may be too hot in the sun!
I'll be replaceing the steering wheel with something and a quick release hub. Something for driving and then this would be cool for shows, but don't know how it is for driving:

not sure of any other interior mods at the moment. maybe a custom made shift knob/handle to replicate the control stick in the plane.

any engine mods are up in the air at this point. i have no experience running anything with FI.

I got a car yesterday! It needs some care, but it was in good mechanical shape with no apparent rust in the rockers, some surface rust in the engine bay. a 92 smurf!

Before any mods can start, I've got to fix a few things I noticed on the way home, and during the inspection.

power antenna- I may not fix it, since I'll likely do a radio delete, just run an amp/mp3 player as some have done.
Cruise control not working, don't know why
door locks are picky and drivers side won't lock from outside with any of the 3 keys
both front fenders and the hood have some dents/ dings, and need pdr or replacement at some point.
replace brake fluid and adjust brakes... very little travel on brake pedal, stops ok, but not how I think it should... of course I don't have another NA to compare it to.

All told, I'm a little giddy to be back in the Miata Owners Club, and I giggled a bit the first time I popped the lights from the driver's seat.

can't wait to see this build once it goes to cosmetic. Have you thought about wheels yet or waiting till you get there

not a clue as to wheels, my thought was something resembling the 3 bladed propellers of the plane, but that seems unlikely to find.

Not recommended for driving. I built one for shows ages ago. You mustn't let go of the wheel. If it starts to spin you can't grab it again. Mine hurt my hand and I would never try this again.

Are you going to put the squadron emblem on the car? How about incorporating a nice set of gold aviator wings on your radio blank to honor him?

My father-in-law, and former owner of our '92SE, went overseas for Operation Torch.
He was in the 33rd Fighter squadron with P-40Fs flown from the USS Chenango into Port Lyautey.

I also have been considering painting up a NA in USN Dark Sea Blue and Intermediate Blue, since I have some paint left over from a F4U.
Also considering a A6M Zero paint scheme since that would be more appropriate for a small Japanese sportscar.

F4F-4s used a wheel cover that could be duplicated with Moon/saltflat spun disks.
Later FM-2s lost the disk, and had wheels like this.

As I'm sure you know F4F/FMs didn't have yokes and control sticks are not that hard to find.
The switches could be used for 'flash to pass" and the horn, etc.
You could use the speedway aluminum wheel and have it powder coated yellow on the rim like the trim wheel.
That would also nod toward the yellow "Torch" surround on the roundel.

While looking for the fuse for the power antenna, I discovered that the battery retaining unit was... not quite stock. The top piece was perfect, however, the wingnut and j hook were missing in action and were replaced by a bungee cord... the problem? The fabric had parted and 2 of the 4 elastic pieces inside were broken. Father-in-law had some old jhooks, so we grabbed the best one, found a wingnut the same diameter, and used his tap and die set to change the threading on it, and extend the threading on the jhook which was too tall. 1 hacksaw and some judicious use of the grinder, and we have a much more secure battery! ( picture was taken, but... disappeared somewhere... very strange.)

Looks great, doesn't it? :fp: What a PITA to get the remains off, and once you get most of it off, you still have the adhesive residue! To remove it easier, a heat gun and a plastic blade is a must!

Oven cleaner is the best thing to remove that nasty sticker residue. Spray it let it sit for 5 minutes and wipe away you will be amazed. It doesnt damage paint or anythimg I use it for nasty pinstriping on cars where its a pain in the butt to remove that sticker residue thats been there for years. It also does wonders on crappy plastic head lights that fade.

Looking forward to this build. I love the ones that look like old fighter planes.

So I finally got around to installing my Hella Supertones that were on the NC. I wound up using the existing brackets, but bending the heck out of them so they'd work. On the NC, I just used the stock wiring, and upgraded the fuse to a 20, but the NA's wiring was pretty thin and most folks don't trust it to run the additional load of the dual horn setup. I used the 30A relay that came with the Hellas, and ran an inline fused wire to the bolt where the battery line comes in on the fuse/relay box on the passenger side. Reconnected the battery, and the car has found it's voice!

So wintertime in ohio sucks. Car is hibernating but I have ordered parts for spring, fluids will be changed, spark plugs and wires, pcv valve and fuel filter, and delrin window bushings. Can't wait for warm weather!

Not much to update at the moment. Plugs and wires, valve cover gasket, fuel filter and pcv valve done. The fluids are still sitting in the garage. LOL! The window guides are still on backorder, so I'm waiting for those!. I discovered the DS map light had a broken connection, so it was soldered, and works great now. I wanted to check the radio connections, so I attempted to remove tombstone, but couldn't get the vents out,so I've got some research to do to find the best way to do that

I also have spoken to someone about paint, and it looks like it'll be painted this coming winter! The text and star will be vinyl, but under the clear coat. I'm likely going to paint the stock daisys until I can afford other wheels, though those will probably be among the last of my major purchases. I've not found anything to resemble the wheels from the plane, and using steelies with smoothie caps will just be too heavy. I'm considering rota jmags, Rota auto x, Enkei Apache II. Steve suggested the Shakotans, which I also like, but worried about fittment.

I had plans to do a radio delete and put gauges there, so I needed something else for the random occasion I want tunes. I do use it as a DD, so that does happen! After some research, I decided on the kenwood KAC-M1824BT. It's 4x 45w rms bridgeable to 2x90 @ 4ohm. I and the main reasons i chose this one were its size and that it has bluetooth built in. I'll be putting it in the passenger side tunnel under the package shelf and running the wired controller into the center via the holes for the fuel lid release. I'm unsure just what I'll be using for door speakers, but I won't be spending tons so the clearwaters are not an option. Leaning towards the polk db651s Attachment 14546

unexpected purchases yesterday. Ohio Swap meet= money gone, parts accumulating! FM Frame rails, and stock cross brace for behind the seats. I guess I need to get new plastic pieces for 94-97 or cut my existing ones. leaning towards getting the others as opposed to hacking my plastic to bits. I know I'd do a crap job of it.

Today I got a shifter rebuild kit from Project-G (and a business card from this forum :-) and decided to install it right away.

I had lots of slop in the shifter.(It felt and looked like I was in neutral even when i was in gear) after removing everything, I found out why! These are the pieces I removed.

What's that you say? where's the bottom bushing? um yeah, it wasn't there, at least most of it. I fished out one piece that was about 1/8 of the bushing. hence the slop I guess!

The difference, obviously is night and day. It feels like a whole new transmission! wish I had done it sooner.

now i need to find the time to fab speaker brackets, and run the wires. I'm not using the stock wiring since I am not running a head unit. I had some sony xplod speakers fall into my hands for free, so I'll be trying those before buying the polk spearkers. I'm also debating if I want to install a set of 6.5 or 6x9s on the package shelf. I guess it'll depend on how it sounds without.

Any suggestions on how to clean the corrosion/padding off the package shelf and the fuel tank access cover?

THANK YOU SO MUCH for lead on the Nardi twin spoke wheel since it is exactly what i have been looking for to use for pics and car shows if i ever do any. :bow: I was just going to just get a ebay F1 style steering wheel since i wasn't planning on actually driving with it but would rather pay more for a quality piece.

Charlie, how do you like that amp? I have my interior blown apart and want to replace mine with a smaller (in dimension) unit.

For corrosion on that panel, scotch bright or rust converter, then paint with a heavy undercoating or heavy applications of plastidip. It will cut a little noise rising from there.

Steve, I haven't tried out the amp yet, car has been sitting for 3 days as I've been very busy with work. Hopefully it will be pretty good. I figure its gotta be better than the pyle one I've seen. The only other bluetooth one that I considered was a... jensen marine amp I think, but this seemed to be a bit better. Thanks for the idea on the covers!

Looks like the previous owner must have let the car sit for a while, so some varmints made a home. Cleaned that out, and after lots of time with a grinder, some primer and paint, I have this to put in.

And lest you think no work was done on the actual install, we managed to feed the speaker wire through the door grommets yesterday, and today used a solder connection with some shrink tubing after, to connect the speaker wires to the corresponding wires from the amp.

It's sort of ironic using a Japanese car to build a car themed after a war in which (on one front) we fought the Japanese. Sounds like a cool build, though.

Work progressed a little today. I decided to remove the rain rail retainers as they weren't in much better shape than the covers we took care of yesterday.

A bit more grinding and some primer work, only to discover I didn't have enough black paint left, so tomorrow I know what I'll be doing.

Rain rail retainer painted and reinstalled, as well as the fuel tank access covers. We got the power wire and ground all set up but when tested, we got nothing. Checked connections and fuses, all were fine.I then decided although there was no head unit, maybe we needed to connect the power control wire that would normally go to the head unit. Bingo. All works well, but need to connect it to a switched power source. Tried the fuse block for the defrost and antenna in the trunk but those were constant, so decided to run to footwell cigar fuse. Ran out of time, so will be doing that Saturday, and mounting speakers. While we had power, I connected the phone via bt to test the free speakers, and it worked ok. I'll likely run an rca to 3.5 to the amp before I button things up, so I have the connection available if I want to run something else.

Ran the amp remote and a micro usb power wire through to the center console cubby.

The amp turns on with the car and immediately pairs with the previously paired dvice, and starts playing whatever song is up on the phone. It works with my navigation app, cutting into the song to give audible direction. As an added bonus, I tried playing Star Wars, as it's one of the videos on my phone. That works too! The bt feed sounds ok to my ears, though the sound is lacking in bass. I'm the wrong person to judge for loudness, since I've got about a 60db loss in both ears, but I can hear it at highway speeds, so it's ok for my needs. now to set up my appt for paint to be done this winter. wooo!

Awesome idea for the amp placement. I was thinking about doing exactly the same thing; moving the stereo to make room for a gauge panel. I was going to put an amp behind the tombstone, but up behind the suspension top-hat is more accessible to muck about with.

well, plans fell through on the paint for this winter, and since i found out just before black friday, with no time before that to try and find another reasonable rate ( found out the day before thanksgiving) I decided to put paint off another year, and take advantage of some black friday sales with the money I had saved up. First arrived package? From Revlimiter, of course. The amount of time, care, and energy he spends on his customers is nothing short of amazing. Everything was packaged to perfection, so nothing arrived damaged, and it even was gift wrapped in boxes, and extra goodies to boot. That Sharka sticker made my day! I still have to order window switches since he was out at the time, but no worries there since the miata will be going into storage within the month. Parts I did get? Warbird gauges and Hvac panel with red lighting, hazard switches, and horn button. Tomorrow, I'm expecting 2 of the other 3 vendor packages!

yup, thats where the wheel came from. Once i get the interior and paint otherwise done, ( new carpet, radio delete panel etc,) the wheel will be recovered in reg and perf. leather. I'm debating on using the exterior colors for that, but leaning towards black.

And today the NRG quick release arrived, still waiting for my daikei hub from Project G (it was out of stock at the time, but theyre expecting some in. Since Adam hadn't fit one of his horn buttons in an ATC wheel, there was some concern, but as it turns out it's a perfect fit!

My hub ( Works Bell, not Daikei, whoops) arrived earlier this week, and I had a bit of time yesterday so I got to work. The install was a lot easier than I expected, though not everything went as planned. As it turns out, the wheel is far too close to me when driving. If my arms ended at my elbows it would work. One of the hazards of being short I suppose. I was considering getting the short hub, but that's only an inch shorter, and I don't even know if that's gonna work. So in the meantime the wheel is attached direct to the hub.

Looked at the forecast, and since it's a lot of rain and then cooling off with possibly snow in the near future, I decided to put Smurfette into storage. Like last year, stabil in the tank, extra air in tires, battery in the house on a tender and car wrapped in tarps so no critters feeding on wiring. Unlike last year?

Removed stuff so I can install Revlimiter goodies when I need a miata fix. Adam's guide to removing parts were super helpful. I discovered 2 of the clips on the gauge hood were broken, not a surprise.

Since I was looking for a black one, due to the nature of my build, I've decided that the least damaging way to accomplish this is Plastidip. Sacrilege on such a part, I know, but it's completely reversible. In order to do that, and install the Revlimiter lenses ( purchasing soon) the cluster currently looks like this:

What about black vinyl? Should be easy to source, trim and reveres when needed.

I was concerned about the adhesive residue if I decide to go back to stainless. I'm not sure how that'd react with the lettering on there. I @m currently trying plastidip, but thinking I may be able to use a print your own sticker so I can have lettering on there. Not sure if that will work though.

I decided not to go with the plastidip, I wasn't happy with the looks,so it came off. I'm pretty happy with the result. I grin every time I get into the car. The tach is off by about 300, even after being careful when I put the needle on. I can deal with it until I need to pull off the cluster for something else.

Thanks! Having spent so much time on the forums, i've discovered that just throwing parts on just because you like them, isn't usually a good idea. A cohesive theme, is needed. my top 2, are Mr. Woolery's Pitcrew, and Adam's Sharka. You've got a great looking one too! I"m seeing parts on yours that would definitely work well with mine. LOL

Looks Awesome! If you have, or can borrow one, using a scantool really helps with getting those needles in the right place. I have the OBDLink LX, and it works very well. Depending on the features of the model you use, you can get the water temp, revs, mph all set up easily.

Your interior is looking the business!!! Thanks for letting me contribute to your build in a small way.

And the horn and steering wheel really are perfect together.

Was planning on installing the Tein SA today, but ran into a bit of a setback. I need to get replacement tophats as mine appear to be collapsed. Yay! In addition, I'm also going to need to replace pads and rotors, and to top it off, I discovered my tires, although they appear decent with lots of tread, are 8 years old (and to think I auto-xed on them last year!) So all other mods including paint are on hold. Looks like paint won't get done this year unless I win the lottery, or get a much better paying job.

Finally made up my mind to get the RoadsterTech blanking plate, and mounting rails, emailed him, then came on here to discover he's no longer doing things. :? anyone know of anyone else doing blanking plates? I just ordered a dual usb outlet to mount one one, since i've got the space, and it'll be better than having something in the lighter socket. also just got the replacement NA upper shock mounts in the mail today. The downside? I don't think I have a day off in the next 12 days.

So today I feel accomplished... and yet i need help. I finally got my Tein Street Advance installed today ( ok over the course of 3 days due to my being slow, and work. LOL) i thought I was supposed to preload them by jacking up under the lower CA, and then tightening things up. I then adjusted the lower spring perch to the .8 inch as recommended in the instructions. put the wheels on, drove around a few miles, then measured center of center cap to fender. 12.5 front drivers side, right where I wanted it. all others are 13 to 13.5. If I had a lift,or perhaps ramps I suppose i could loosen things, and then retighten them while car is sitting on wheels. but since I don't, what are my options? I'd like to get the ride height dialed in so it's about 12.5 front, 12.75 rear or perhaps 12.25 front, 12.5 rear...

This is the PITA on first installation for coilovers. Not verbatim, but here are some tips that might help:

Use painters tape, a measuring tape, a pen, and sometimes a cheap vernier caliper. Prepare to remove the wheels a few times, so I usually only put two lug its on each wheel, barely more than hand tight.

I work on the ends, rather than the sides.

Put a piece of tape of each fender and measure the heights. Write the measurements on the tape.

Start with the rears because they will be higher. When you are are making adjustments, count the number of turns you make on the collars. Mark one of the notches on the collars to help you keep track.

Keep in mind that the amount you lower the collar isn't necessarily linear to the amount you want to lower the car.

Every time you adjust and lower the car to the ground, bounce the car; pop the trunk and sit on the edge of it a few times, or the fenders, to compress the suspension for a more accurate height measurement.

If you raise a corner, wrap a piece of tape around the threads on the shock, flush to the collar so you have a reference point to measure from so you can repeat on the other side, if necessary. Sometimes the calipers are easier to measure the amount you adjusted them because the fit into tight spaces a little more.

Try to adjust corners evenly. Too much can cause you to chase measurements on individual corners.

It's OK if the driver's side is a *little* higher, you will be sitting on that side while driving.

Be patient, one corner too high or low can throw off the other corners and cause some frustration, so be prepared to raise and lower the car a few times, and your wheels, to get it smoothed out.

Don't try to make adjustments while the car is one the ground, you are going to work harder to make an adjustment and you can damage the collars and/or threads.

This is why I haven't raised my car! I need to raise it a tad, because it rubs slightly on track. I'm just too lazy!

So between my inventory job, and doing pictures for the local autocross group, I managed to find time to get things approximately where I wanted, 12.5 in front and 13 in back. Ride on the Teins is not really what I was hoping for, but will try adjusting them a little softer. ( set at 8 clicks from full firm at the moment) Since the car is yet to be painted, I decided to let my inner child out, and he decided to play with plastidip.

I was planning on putting airplane gauges there, along with some usb power outlets, but it seems a shame to cut that piece! Anyone know if there are blanking plates for the cabin lights in the NA? I could mount the USB ports on the passsenger side if I could find one of those.

96 and 97 cars have blanking plates instead of lights in the dash.

Parts arrived a bit ago, and finally getting around to posting. I got the m800 speakers that people are talking about on mnet. I like them, but they're a bit bright, soundwise. I'll have to get some sort of better equalizer app, and see if that helps. They do however sound much better than what was in there previously. Since i've got 2 channels unused on the amp, perhaps a set of small subs in the rear may boost the base enough. The other part that came in is the LRB door panels. Great product! I need to get a set of speaker grills though. I looked into getting them upholstered today, and the guy actually thought it'd be a shame to cover the panels up, they looked so nice. I agree, but am just a bit concerned with the heat factor. If I burn off a couple layers of flesh, to the upholsterer's it's going!

I was half considering incorporating the star insignia from the exterior ( and the horn button) onto the grills. Thoughts on that?

Door panels look awesome! :drinkto: The full aluminum door panels would look even better, imo, but intolerable in the heat so wise choice. Star speaker grills would look sweet and add to a cohesive theme! :slayer:

I like the way the panels look now. I think the star insignia could look good but I think I would have to see it. I wouldn't be in a rush to do it though as it looks so good now. Maybe try it as more of a finishing touch to complete the theme and remove if it doesn't work.

I'm planning on heading down to the Miatas at the Gap, and figured I'd be using my phone as a gps. I've had a cheapo suction cup mount, but it's fallen off the windshield one too many times for me to trust it. I had a Ram Mount, but it was left in the shared work car, and disappeared. I decided to replace the Ram mount, but with a twist.
Looking at the dash one day, I noticed the cover for the center 10mm bolt.

Ram mount had the option for a 1" ball with an M6 threaded bolt, so that, with their long arm, and the x mount, was my purchase. Perfect... or so I thought.

The bolt on the bottom was about half the length I needed, so some ingenuity was needed, a scrap L bracket, judicious use of a grinder, some black paint, and I had what I needed. Bolting the L bracket into the dash required some macguyvering, but in the end I'm pretty happy with the result. It's got some wiggle, and perhaps after some thought, I'll come up with a better way to attach it to that point. I put some cushion under the arm, so the wiggling doesn't mar up the dash. For now, I'm pretty happy with it.

FYI, if you haven't been, sometimes cellular & GPS gets spotty out there. If you can, grab an area map when you get there for reference. It doesn't need to be super accurate, just so you can use towns and road numbers for general direction.

We will be arriving with a couple of friends from Dayton on the 28th. Staying at Tapoco lodge. We were originally staying at...dragons rest cabins I think, but a spot opened up at Tapoco. Thanks for the tip on the map!

The lower 28, along the river towards the CRoT is my favorite. Heading there next weekend to do some whitewater rafting. Still have a dream to own a summer home/cabin in that area.

and now back to the regularly scheduled build. :P Before the trip to the gap, I managed to install a redline shift boot, and more importantly something for power. I got a 12v to dual 2.1 usb converter. I unplugged the lighter, then made a y adapter to split the power from it and feed it back to the lighter, and into the usb converter. I bolted the converter box onto the center console brace behind where the radio normally is, and ran the outlets temporarily to the base of the console on the passenger side, just below the bolt access plate. Once I finally manage to find a blanking plate for the courtesy light, I'll put them in that spot. not much else going on with it at the moment.

I'm looking for some leds to put in the visor mount area. I never use the visors, so it seems a good use of the area!

boy it's been ages since I've updated. Mostly due to lack of funds and nothing really happening.
Got replacement fenders from rockauto, but waiting til paint to put them on. trying to figure out how to do my leds for interior and trunk lid. got an actuator that will be powered only if the car is on, and I'm hoping to use for the trunk lid, so I can disable lever in cabin. I got the garagestar shorty console, but since I can't make it work with the revlimiter window switches, I'm back to stock, and it'll be up for sale at some point.

Lastly, I'm in talks with a vendor for my vinyl for the exterior. I'm hoping to get the car painted by the end of the year.
and since the engine hopefully will be pulled while that's going on, I'd like to replace some of the hoses and seals then.
hoses at the very least. any recommendations, oem or silicone?

Charlie, nice progress! I missed the last few posts.

RE: LEDs, I know there are light kits for the visor blanks, but I can't remember who sells them. I installed two LEDs in the bottom of my rear view mirror and wired them to the interior lights so they can be turned on/off by the three way switch on the drivers side. It was pretty inexpensive (~$20-25) and being on the mirror, they point straight down onto the center console, which is helpful. Others have retrofit GM rear view mirrors with the lights built in.

RE: hoses, I prefer rubber/oe over silicone. If you want to use silicone, I think I would only use them where the heater hoses go. I cut and replace the heater hoses anytime they need to be removed, so that's probably why I use OE. The rubber hoses last. It's when they degrade from oil leaks that makes them weak, but I guess if people want them for that, why not just fix the oil leaks, you know? ;)

The vinyl should look great! The led visor blanks are made by Jass Performance, I'm sure some one else makes them as well though.

About 2 years ago i got a set of the Flyin' Miata frame rails. yesterday, got some help and finally did the install. When I got them, they had no hardware so I called up FM and had them ship me some. It wasn't till we did the install that I realized they didn't send me any short bolts for the inboard passenger side (where the fuel/brake lines are). we ended up measuring and shortening the bolts we had for that side. once we got the passenger side in, we went and measured and drilled the first hole for drivers side. Strangely, from the interior it looked like it was further back, based on placement of the hole to the body rail that went across the car (where the front of the seat rail bolts in. I was worried due to the closeness of the rear bolt to the bulkhead. but we discovered that all was good, and got the car buttoned up. Car definately feels more solid over things like RR tracks. Have yet to try it out on twisties tho!

It's been about 3 years I think since I've driven that. While it was pretty good, I'm not a huge fan of the blind crests. Next week I maybe going on a drive in South central Ohio, and the first weekend in August is MATG, so I'll definitely find out then!

Spent the day searching the internet for the best price on parts. Planning on having the engine out this winter for paint, so all hoses and several gaskets will be replaced, as well as the clutch and belts/timing stuff/water pump. Also doing the motor mounts. My thanks to Steve (KFJ) for the prodding and help. I'm managed to chop almost $120 from my intial collection of parts. from 600 to about 480. Still more than Id like, but such is life. Now if only I could find a place locally to paint the car cheaper than 4100 bucks, I'd be a bit better off

ordered the last of the parts today... I've wound up spending lots more than I'd planned. up to $650 or so and still have to buy the fluids. I wound up adding a clutch, and the clutch master and slave to all the hoses and gaskets I'd planned on replacing. Plans are for engine to come out mid february, engine bay painted concurrently. Weirdly I'm actually leaning to the interior green the navy used for maintenance spaces. I figure I'm doing it myself, so if I did it in grey, it wouldn't match the exterior anyway, so why not stick with the period correct option. Exterior Paint will hopefully follow in late february/early march.

Do you mean zinc chromate? That would be cool. Another thing to look at is aircraft fluid line identification tape. I can't remember the exact name, but it goes around tubing to indicate which system it is (fuel, hydraulics, nitrogen, oxygen, etc).

The zinc chromate has generally fallen out of issue to disposal issues, and its carcinogenic properties, but yes that sort of green. May look into that tape. Thanks!

Here's another detail to look at doing. I was Air Force and was on the C-130 platform (mainly AC, MC and HC models). On the nose wheel we would mark one wheel with each crew position equally spaced on the edge of the rim (think wheel of chance). When we landed we'd see what position was closest to the ground. That person bought the first round. You could do 4 points marking 2 as pilot and 2 as navigator.

So it started yesterday, I got the car to it's engine work home, and began removing parts. I'm slow as f*ck and it's gonna take me forever, but I'm gonna learn some of this even if it kills me. prior to this point, the most complex things i've done are a suspension swap and thermostat change in an NC ( much more of a PITA than the earlier generations)

No picture taken today, but managed to learn a bit more, and remove a few more things. Was hoping to get the exhaust manifold off, but discovered that the cat has been welded inline, so can't disconnect there, and that joint at the end of the manifold is a biatch to get to, not to mention a bit of rust will make it harder. anyone managed to disconnect from there. or should we just cut it before the cat and remove it that way, and weld it together after?

If the cat is welded to the header, cut it.

The joint at the end of the manifold? Are you referring to the bracket that attaches the manifold to the transmission?

The "joint" that's difficult to reach/a bit rusty is circled in orange. the joint circled in blue doesn't exist. the cat has been welded in.

So the manifold to downpipe, that is what you circled in orange.

It is difficult to get to and iirc, I simply unbolted the manifold and cat to midpipe and removed the manifold/downpipe as one on my na8 but think I might have separated them and removed separately on my nb1.

If you are not reusing don't be afraid to cut bolts, etc. Even if you were with whole welding issue I would source another stock exhaust to use.

Cut it. The NA6 needs the header to be rotated as you pull it up to clear the steering shaft, IIRC. It doesn't pull straight out.

I bet you could get one for free. Hit up the different forums and put up a WTB (For free) ad and check out Craigslist. I have a na8 exhaust you could have if you were close, not that it would do you much good.

The NA6 mani usually cracks where the primaries meet on top. You can see soot in there if it is, can hear it sometimes. I can watch for one if you need it. A lot of guys ditch them for aftermarket headers.

will keep that in mind Steve, will know if I need another mani once we get it removed. there doesn't appear to be any cracking at the moment. but haven't looked carefully yet. Only issue with it that I know of, is the lowest heat shield bracket snapped off when trying to remove the bolt.

That's not uncommon. Corrosion and time.

I've found that those bolts (at least in theory) are simple to find and remove, once you find the correct angle of attack. I know on the nb, one bolt was a bear to reach until I moved out from under the car, and out to the side, near the wheel well. If something seems too difficult to get at, always look for another route. Also, don't cheap out on your universal (swivel) attachments and extensions.

In the enthusiast's manual, it says extensions of about 14", a universal attachment, and the socket should be used, and to attack the one bolt from the Drivers wheel well, so it sounds just like what you're saying. Thanks! Sprayed it with some pb, last time I was there.will have to spray some more before trying

Finally it looks like I'm making progress. We've decided to cut the exhaust to get it out. No worries since he's got a welder. Can put back together or maybe find another. Definitely seeing evidence of oil leaking from crank I believe, as well as the one at the cas which I fixed last year. After some thought I decided that as much as I like the Bride exas 3 seats, they really wouldn't work well for a daily. I have been tossing around the idea of seats from a c4 or 5 vette or rsx type s. Friday some rsx-s seats popped up for a price that was hard to resist. Free! I've started removing trim pieces and gaskets on body to prepare for paint, but one of the screws on the passenger side mirror is being problematic. soaked in pb blaster, and still won't budge. started to strip. auuuugh! update time! Car is being taken to paint next Wednesday. While it's not running yet, much of the engine bay is done, and the body trim and panels are removed. the only things that *need* to be done before paint are removal of the front fender liners, (so we can put the fenders back on, obviously, LOL) and welding a plug in for the antenna hole. I'd also like to get the clutch and brake lines completed and bled..

Crap, and when fitting it back together, noticed some slivers were actually missing along the cracks, so no gluing for Charlie. reviewed prices online, and decided to order the LRB finish panel. It should be here before he's done painting, so I should be able to take it to him to take care of. Added expenses on a car project? who'd have thunk it!

Had some time now that "smurfette" (wife's name for it, gonna have to change, LOL) is at paint, so I decided to design some speaker grills. My first attempt, I tried using holes in the star, but wasn't happy with the look, then decided on this design.
The person I'm using is currently out of state, but should be back soon, to start the work on them. I enjoy coming up with things like this, and then creating them in Autocad. Among other things, I did a KINOD logo a long while back, and also designed my wife's 1st anniversary gift (pendant) which the jeweler then created in 18k gold.

Its 2 toned. Colors are supposed to be sea blue and light ghost grey . The painters supplier matched my sample colors(model paint) to a generic #2 grey metallic, and Skyline blue used by AMC in 1971

Made some progress over the last 2 days in reassembly. Rear bumper mostly on, ran into something odd. But may have solved it. Lrb Finish panel mounted but just noticed it needs tweaking thanks to the pic, door handles, mirrors and bushings installed.

What's with the rivets/bolts in the finish panel? I'm guessing this isn't a direct bolt-on replacement?

nope, it's an LRB aluminum finish panel. comes in 3 pieces and there are brackets underneath. In most cases it uses existing holes for the brackets, but for mine (maybe it's a NA6 thing) I had to drill 2 holes on each side to mount it. not difficult mounting though. and I don't have to worry about it shattering now!

Thanks, Steve! Couldn't have done it without your help and others. It always seems I have these Grandiose plans that fall through, because it takes too long, or I just simply don't have the ability or knowledge to follow through. I'm determined not to have that happen with Wildcat. I've put so much of myself into this thing it's nuts. Obsessed? probably. One things for sure, after this, everything I chose to do will seem simple I think. LOL!

update: while putting on passenger mirror, it twisted and scratched.. Frak! I've got paint and touched it up, will need to smooth it out before putting the mirror back on, and installing the window gasket. installed DS gasket, and all bulbs in taillights.
When I bought the new battery, I didn't even think of the exhaust nipples on the battery. went to reconnect them to the hoses, only to realize the hoses are oval, and nipples are round... yes, that's how I like mine too:winky:, but they don't match up! Found a random short piece of vacuum hose. cut short pieces and fortuitously the OD shapes the oval to round perfectly, and the ID is a perfect fit for the nipple. so problem solved!
Plan is to have the rest of the body panels installed by Saturday night, and go for a shakedown cruise Sunday. may or may not happen, but that's the hope.

Your car is coming out great! I look forward to seeing the final product. Btw, you should update what you drive. She is a smurf no more. I'm curious what you'll enter.

Exterior almost buttoned up today. Just need the undertray and fender liners done! Then the interior needs done. But she's just about drivable!

Minor setback. Drove 16 miles all seemed good. Opened the garage door the next morning to a puddle of coolant on the ground. Crap. Stealership says 220 bucks to replace lower radiator hose(brand new). I controlled my initial reaction and said no thanks. Removed fan and looked closer. It appears there is a crack at the radiator/hose outlet, and not actually the hose. Ordered a mishimoto all aluminum replacement. Current pics!

Busy day today. Got some vinyl done. The navy on the sides, and the trunklid. Went to put one of the roundels on and completely effed it up. I need a pro to do it. Most definitely beyond my abilities. Will need to get replacements.
After discovering the coolant leak, i took it to the dealer where they said lower coolant hose. 220 to replace. I almost laughed in their face but didn't. I did a more thorough inspection than them I guess and discovered it was a crack in the seam of the tank and lower hose outlet. Ordered a Mishimoto all aluminum replacement and took a couple hours and replaced it. No leaks and car seems to be running great. Currently car is having coat of wax/protectant put on, and will get it back tomorrow afternoon. While I'm waiting to get the vinyl done, (I ruined one star trying to do it myself, had to find pro to do it.)I decided to get my door panels assembled. The mounting holes for joining lower portion to armrest were fine on one side but 4 or 4 on the other side were destroyed. I found a 3d part online that is designed for repairing them. Sand remaining portion to a point where this fits over them and glue in place. Sadly Wildcat is put away for the season, all tarped up, and battery removed. I've had issues with it not starting due to grounding out somewhere, after suggestions from folks, I removed the quick disconnect, and it seemed to eliminate the issue. I say seemed, since I only started the car 3 times after removing it, so come spring I will find out more. LOL also within a week of taking it out in the spring, Wildcat will hit 150k miles. whee!
also, strangely I chose 2 tarps, and wound up mirroring the paint scheme, in reverse, but still kinda funny

Wow do i feel silly. I just was reviewing and realized I hadn't posted a picture after arriving in nh, but before wildcat was put away. So here we are on the shores of lake massabesic after finding someone to redo the stars, since I messed one up.

I've been doing a lot of thinking since my major life change last sept/oct, and realized that I really needed some quality time in the car, so assuming things work out I plan on making the 7k mile round trip to Laguna Seca in oct. Got a nice tool roll ahtat doesnt take up tons of room, but hoping it wont be needed. The trip to nh went perfectly and no issues at all arose. Was kind of hoping to find a co pilot for the trip, but if not, such is the life of a fairly recently separated person.
I'd also love to find other crazies... er enthusiasts who are making the trip to join a caravan across the US. I'll be planning on visiting a friend in CO, and hitting 4 corners and Grand Canyon village. I'd love to hit pikes peak instead,, but oct and high elevations make that unlikely. Will have to see what it's like a week or so out.

In preparation for the country trip I hope to be making, but also just to have in the car, picked up a tool roll online, and put in the most likely to be used items. Any idea what size wrenches I'd need for the brake lines? A combo flare wrench for brake lines (10/11mm) and 7,8, or 9 mm for the bleeders.

Thanks Steve! I really appreciate all the input you've given over the course of this project. Will be looking for those tools soon. When putting everything back in the engine bay I realized the usefulness of the flare wrenches, but didnt note which we used.

I was there that year but had just gotten my miata. No idea of what shape she was in so I wasnt going to chance a long trip like that. I flew out to la and then drove up with KINOD and the ohio guys including the maker of this video.

A few things have come in the mail with some additional ones in the works. Type 1 Garagestar license plate bracket, since NH sucks. Jass door pull blanks, since my current pulls just have screws, and the last item is the Garagestar wiper cowl cover. Having recieved a preview of the parts outstanding I'll only say I'm sure they will be the usual fantastic execution and quality associated with this vendor.
Of course the car is still in storage, so the parts just sit here... taunting me. Auuugh!

Updates! Installed Garagestar wiper cowl and Revlimiter front badge and Jass blanks with Revlimiter badges. Adam did such a great job on these. I haven't been happy with the OEM seats, they don't have wonderful lumbar support, and just not terribly comfortable on long drives (IE- over 2 hours) I had considered Bride Exas III's due to my experience in a friends car, 6 hours in the seat in one day, and no issues) but they're just too expensive. tried RSX seats, too wide for the car, looked for C5 and c6 seats, but nothing reasonably priced, and though rx8 seats probably would've fit, they cut down on leg room since they wouldn't go back all the way.

Today, success! I found a listing on craigslist for these.

Awesome price on a super clean pair of surfboards!

They are my favorite stock seats, but the NA seats are easier to customize. Adding lumbar support to them is pretty easy.

after my drive tomorrow, I'll see what i need comfort wise, and when they get recovered in the future, I'll have any additional lumbar support put in, as well as having the seat bottom foam redone on the drivers side. I sat in it briefly tonight, and discovered I sit higher. For most people that may be a bad thing. Me, I'm good with that, LOL!

October is fast approaching! still haven't installed new usb ports or hardwired dash cam in. am kind of unsure how to wire it all up. I have an add on fuse box that I want to wire everything up to, but want it on accessory power.

I've reversed the route I'm taking, and updated probable stops. I am getting somewhat antsy just to be on my way!

Met up with Charlie last Saturday. I arrived early at the Crossroads of Time on the NC side of Tail of the Dragon, so I decided to shoot down to the Lookout and maybe catch him coming up.

I didn’t have to wait too long when he passed me. I scrambled to my car and chased him down. He probably didn’t enjoy me bearing down on him like I did, so he pulled over to let me pass. I followed him off, and as I poked my head out the window, he recognized me. :)

We had lunch in Robbinsville, then I led him over Blood Mountain in GA and into Atlanta. Good drive!

So I kind of dropped off the face of the earth for a while. I've been a bit down and so haven't been up to sharing things. The trip to Pensacola and then to Laguna Seca did happen, and it truly was an epic trip.
Excuse the no pictures... not sure why it won't let me upload them...

En route to the Dragon, I stopped by Cooter's and met Tom Wopat. Met up with Steve, and he was kind enough to help/do an oil change. The folks at the Naval Aviation Museum were great, and kind enough to let me put the car next to the Ship's Bell of the Ranger. From there to New Orleans, and across the country on the 10.

Took a bit of a side trip to Tombstone, then continued on to LA and Santa Barbara to meet up with Kinod for the final push to Laguna Seca. The weekend at the track was great, and it was nice to catch up with folks I hadn't seen since attending MRLS 2014. As expected Friday night free drink hours was ... slightly crazy! LOL

The transmission/clutch was making some chatter, which had me somewhat concerned, but after talking with a bunch of folks, no real consensus was made, other than it was probably ok to make it home with it.
Headed home a slightly more direct route, but still with lots of detours. Drove down the Strip in Vegas, then on to Zion NP, and the north rim of the Grand Canyon, where I unexpectedly wound up staying at the lodge. Arrived just in time for sunset and gotsome great shots. het 4 corners NP on the way to my friends house in Colorado, which brings us the the bad part of the trip.

I started out that morning early, and as soon as I turned into the sun, headed east, I realized I needed to wipe the windshield so I could see a bit clearer. Bug guts were not helping visibility! I pulled into a lot, and got it cleaned. Well, the intersection to join the main road was a bit of a strange one, and I was behind an HHR. I watched him pullout,(over 2 car lengths) and looking left I saw it was clear, so I started to go, only to find the HHR had stopped. I hit the front passenger corner into him. His tailpipe wound up being the perfect height for my turn signal light, so it broke that instead of going through the bumper. it pushed the corner in, bending the fender a bit, but that and the light were the only exterior panels damaged. The bad part was everything under that corner was bent, and had to be straightened out.

I finally saved up the money to pay for repairs out of pocket, as the insurance co would've totaled it, and I didn't want to deal with a salvage title. got it back a week ago. Now I just have to get the vinyl replaced on the door, which they repainted, and the fender.
Lastly, I've got a new top being installed Saturday, and just picked up a curt hitch from an Mnetter who wound up not installing due to the condition of the mounting points, So it's basically brand new.

Hopefully I can figure out why I can't share photos anymore, so I can post a few things.
