Hello, my name is Eli. I have been a miata fan and owner for a long time. I decided to open this build thread to motivate myself and continue working on my ride. The car has been sitting at my dad's house for quite a while and it is sad for me that I once put so much effort into building it and I did, but as a single dad I have priorities to complete and fulfill for my 10 year old son. Now it is time to work on it again, not for me but my son as this project and build thread is dedicated to him because one day I will hand the keys to my own ride to him. It is my greatest joy to show you pictures of my car as it used to look like not long ago and to explain in this thread where I am heading with this project.


About me and what I like about my miatas.

The first time I felt in love with Miatas was at an autocross event. That was a long time ago, I was in my 20's and I used to drive a Datsun 240z. With that said, the miatas completely destroyed my Z at that event and so ironically I started liking these cars. To my surprise I went online and found a site named: hyperspeed.com ((the website is no longer running) and coincidentally the owner looked like he lived in Tampa. (It was Randy George!)) The website hyperspeed.com had an amazing display of NA miatas with a bunch of spoiler kits, headlights, side mirrors and rare parts from Japan and it was awesome!! At the time I already owned a 91 silverstone miata so my love for miatas grew even more, and so I began modifying my ride. Years have passed now since the inception of hyperspeed which was a turning point in my life and my passion for miatas. Subsequently I felt in love with anotherroadster the Blue Potato, another sick ride back in the days and with time thanks to Peter (the owner of Blue Potato) I established a close connection with the staff of Rspeed. Thanks to the staff at Rspeed, <Mariela Hector and Joe> I began building my previous and present roadster. The thing about me is that I have always been a fan of sleeper cars, for the most part never like cars with body kits. For my past and present project I wanted to combine a miata that was fast, a sleeper and with parts from Japan but mostly for the interior of the car. The 91 silverstone was nice but when I saw the NB I felt in love with it and so I bought one, a 2001 which is the present ride I have today. and I built it.

The Title of this thread and my view of life regarding build threads
The title of this thread, is the culmination of my build and dream made reality. I always like fast cars and driven and built a fast miata before (*the 91 silverstone) but I realized that building a car is a life journey that could last a long time and you either build the car or you let it go. In my point of view, the feeling of letting go especially when you are very close to finish a project is what prevents me from quitting as I understand I will regret this opportunity that might not come again in the future. Hopefully with your support and comments I motivate myself even more to finish the NB one day, and my dream will become reality. My dream is just to drive and race the car at the track, enjoy time together with my son and celebrate together the time effort I put into building this car for him.

About the engine.
The engine was built a while back with Pauter rods and Wiseco pistons and a billet gear in the oil pump The NB02 intake manifold was gutted, and I removed the butterflies. In addition the lower intake manifold has a hidden plenum on the lower portion of the manifold, you can gut it out and that will give more volume on boosted rides. I also designed a plenum spacer to create more volume between both manifolds. The valve cover was modified to adapt a VTA catch can and I converted the fuel system to return style setup. The engine has a Stainless Steel long tube header design turbo kit with external wastegate. A custom intake, I made for this turbo kit. some misc and my coolant reroute. The car was designed to be a sleeper daily driver, below please find pics of the engine bay.

This is where the project gets crazy.

At the present time I wanted to take the NB to another level so I decided to upgrade the transmision and differential. The car now has a new rear suspension set up to accomodate the gear ratio of the 6 speed. However in order to make this possible I also had modify the entire fuel system Below are pictures of the components and final outcome of my new set up

I recently spent an extra money to quiet down the fuel pump, with a little bit of research I found that Aeromotive sells a fuel speed controller which prolongs the fuel pump life and quiet down the fuel pump. The upgrade was necessary to keep the noise down and so the car is a daily driverr again with the fuel demand needed for this build. I

A new movie of the car with the fuel speed controller will be my next post. Thank you for joining this build thread.

I will dyno the car with and without it and post the results in this thread. There is more volume now tough. Another thing i didn't post here is the fact that I blocked the EGR pipe from the exhaust to the intake manifold and removed the PVC and routed a line in the valve cover to the catch can. That made a big difference in keeping the temperatures down. In fact I believe performance wise that's better mod than the plenum spacer. No engine codes for doing this mod.

Awesome pics. The NB looks evil with the angel eyes and the NA reminds me of KITT when he would go into super pursuit mode! :D

Glad you found a fix for your fuel pump. Do you have a water temp gauge ? Your coolant re-route looks pretty crazy, and though I've heard people make fun of it, it sure looks interesting.

I like that you've really gone out and really built this car for your self / your son. I can see lots of dedication and one-off custom work. That intake manifold spacer is pretty sweet. You should sell em haha.

Man, what is that hood and headlight set-up on that blue NA... I love it, it changes the whole look of the car...

Your son is one lucky young man. That was a nice little bit of history you posted at the beginning of the thread. I kind of agree with Phat that your car has a bit of big screen Batmobile style going on and that is actually pretty cool. The Batmobile is a bit stealthy from a distance and menacing close up.

Thanks my friend an trust me living in Miami I better keep the car stealthy and i never turn the halos on, i only use them for taking pics of the car and or sometimes when I go to a car show. I am working on getting the car repainted again in its original color and getting new wheels for the track but they are difficult to find in 4x100 pattern

Dave's car is insane, and one of a kind NA with rare parts like the hood. you should see that paint in the middle of the day, it glows like neon blue pretty cool.

Thank you mrpham. I will love to design and sell a bunch of coolant reroutes like mine but a lot of people dislike hot side reroutes, they think is fail while i think the other way around. my reroute doesn't even need a thermostat spacer, but I will refrain to talk about it any further, it is trouble for me. trust me on this dude

i will happen, my first modification will be buy Nakamae Fenders and lip, paint the car and buy rims. next will be to change to Air Air intercoler set up for a water to air using the intercooler I previously designed, the car needs a new paint already and i wont drive it until it looks decent enough.

Today was a great day. I have been receiving parts and so I decided to work on the car again. You guys need to understand this build is mostly engine work, The part i decided to upgrade today was the Skunk2 throttle body kit sold by 949 racing.

As you can see the TB is bigger than the OEM unit so I removed the modifiyed 01 intake manifold and took it to my relatives's shop. There I have a assortment of tools to work with. It was actually fun get back to do some things I used to do back in the days. For the remainder of the day (it was raining's a lot in Miami) I matched and ported the intake manifold to the bigger TB. about the only complaint I have with the Skunk 2 Throttle body is the fact the supplied allen bolt to attach the IAC is too short. Luckily I have a box full of allen bolts. I collect them and have plenty of allen bolts with the proper size for this project.

Tomorrow I am going to install everything back and except some miscellaneous ideas I have for the engine I am basically done. and will concentrate on the body parts next, and brake upgrade. Thanks for watching this thread.

In addition to this project I also replaced the o-rings in the VVT solenoid. There were so worn out and brittle I believe this was the reason the VVT was not working well. I tested the VVT solenoid with 12 volts and works fine, the o-rings tough were another story....

Believe it or not the total cost of this project was just five dollars. I have access to a hydraulic store in Miami where I can get high temperature Viton o-rings.

Hyper, you should consider investing in a paper scroll bit and some paper scrolls. You will get the most out of your porting that way. They are easy to use, and there is less of a chance of cutting too deep when approaching the final port shape.

After I matched/ported, I polished the intake manifold with paper scroll bit, while is not mirror like finish is smooth enough. Here are more pictures of the TB in the car with intake. I am going have to delay this project a little bit. After several attempts to calibrate the TPS sensor today it appears and looks like is fried. I previously used the TPS sensor 5v source to run the adaptronic ECU and the water/meth kit I used to have on the car

Would any of you be interested in a group buy for custom Intercoooler mounts for the N/A and NB?? I bet it will fit other cars two. 100% Compatible with Mishimoto intercoolers and Flying miata intercooler hoses. They are very solid mounts that attach to factory mounts. Well, my Christmas present arrived today and I found a little bit of time to install this part in my car. I have been wanting to do this modification for a very long time and so I decided to get it done. Recently I sold a Hardpark Delrin shift knob to a forum member in this board, with the money earned I made some purchases for the interior of the car. I bought a 3" shifter extender from Bill at Miataroadster, a round delrin shift knob, and the Auti TT shift boot as my shift boot was looking old. Here are some pictures of before and after. Where is your parking brake?

Good eye!!!! At the moment I don't have parking brake due to the Ford rear end conversion. I had the option of putting the Ford calipers, OEM calipers and Wilwood calipers. I chose the Wilwood calipers since I just bought a matching set for the front. This is coincidentally my next modification to the car, 4 wheel big brake upgrade, tires and wheels.

2014 is the year I will finish this car, my next project is to convert the factory rear suspension to drag race style similar to the white NB in Orlando. The reason for this modification is to center the differential as much as possible as presently I am using the factory shock mount location with bilstein coil overs. The new set up will look very similar to the white NB which will allow me to use the widest wheel possible.

2014 is the year I made final revisions to Hyper Coolant Reroute. I finally installed the front coolant support neck, a chrome fabric heat shield and SS support bracket with a logo on it that speaks for itself. I am very happy with the final design as the coolant pipe is now secured in 6 mounting points all the way to the radiator. Here are some pictures. Enjoy!!

quick update.

Today I installed the FM front brake kit, installation was very simple! FM supplies everything including bolts and washers so it as pretty much straight forward and fun. The best part is that the kit is compatible with my rota wheels so I didn't have to buy wheel spacers or anything related. Today was a great day.

I want to answer this question now as my new suspension set up is done. The reason I went with a solid rear axle instead of IRS set up is for traction and because with a true 4 link axle you can tune the differential pinion angle for better hook up and to reach more speed. In order to design an effective set up in the miata however you have to spend substantial money in parts and then strategically design the chassis to place the 4 link arms in a position where the pinion angle is best effective as explained in the above pics. Luckily I am one of those individuals who have the time and resources to make this happen, but it wasn't easy I must tell you, I had to modify a ton of stuff in order to achieve the results I accomplished to this date.

My biggest challenge was to convert the chassis to a 4 link set up in a way where i can easily transfer the parts to another miata if I ever want to. I also wanted to find a way to keep the 4x100 wheel pattern, have a true cat back exhaust and shortened differential rear end that look like it belong in a miata. The placement of the fuel cell while retaining the factory trunk latch system was a headache and keeping the factory fuel sensor components while having a system capable of more than enough power forced me to spend additional money in order in areas I didn't want to spend but it was necessary in order to have a true sleeper car. But I am finally done with my build and for the remaining of this thread what is left is simply to retune my car perhaps upgrade the 6speed transmission in the near future.

15x7 with 20 offset and 15x8 with 0 offset. The rear wheels need to be wider as I designed the differential arms to be narrower by 2 inches from the factory specs. I will post a side picture of the car with the staggered wheels. I still have to adjust the Front and Rear suspension and drop the car even more tough.

so yesterday I spent the entire day cleaning the interior bay, sanding and painting the rear panel where the fuel tank used to be. It was one of the hottest day of this year. I ended up drunk as hell due to much heat and beer. lol

Great question, our local 1/8 track in Miami doesn't require it (see link here: http://www.countylinedragwayinc.com/rules.htm) plus the purpose of my build is to have both a street/strip car so I can enjoy, daily drive my ride dude.

Most likely in the near future I will upgrade to a full rollcage, aluminum seat with 3" inch SFI rated harness, that will be estimated after I re-tune the car.

The past week has been so hot here in Florida I feel pity for anyone who would to dare to wrench on his/her car....

I finally installed the Cool-it Thermotec heat and sound deadener I purchased from my friend Alex a/k/a Speedworks. Thanks again Alex!!! It was a lot of work, Uff!!!! After that I completed the interior, I dropped the car at the body shop for a fresh coat of paint. I will post pictures of the final outcome once is completed most likely 2-3 weeks from today. As for now. I am going to take a break and enjoy the rest of the summer with my family and my son.

The project is practically done. No more wrenching for me!!!

Thank you. I agree, the FD seats look good on the Mazda Roadster as the reclining part of the seats sits lower than the standard NB02 seats. I am saving the interior pictures until the car is painted which is like 2-3 weeks from today. I was a lot of work but I am finally done with the interior.

There has been a change of plans.

The past weeks I have been working on installing the Hydra and redesigning some of the components from my old turbo kit. I decided to simplify things in order to have a more reliable/mechanical set up. I spoke to Jeremy of Flyin' Miata in order to confirm some of my questions and in order to design a simpler turbo set up.

As of today, I eliminated the following.
1. EGR valve
2. EGR pipe
3. VTICS solenoids and sensors
4. VTICS vacuum lines and fittings in the intake manifold
5. MAF sensor
6. Installed EGR blocking plate on manifold.
7. Relocated the IAT sensor to intercooler.
8. Adapted a bigger vacuum line for TIAL BOV in order to have the best response possible.
9. Installed ID1000 fuel injectors.
9. and last.... Designed a 2.75" BOV pipe for the TIAL BOV which is the same diameter of the Skunk2 throttle body. I have to update the thread sometime later, in the meantime here are pictures of the BOV pipe. it look amazing! best part it doesn't have any visible welds, I think it looks pretty cool and matches my coolant reroute perfectly.

Excellent question, on cars with the PPF the brace may not be a good idea for a daily driver due to excessive drivetrain vibration but for more my set up it should be great, plus I will secure the transmission in two locations instead one.

I have one of the first series 949 crossflow radiators and in the short time I have been able to use it have been very impressed with its performance. I found through trail and error the best way to fill the radiator and system without spilling coolant. If you use a pressure bottle like the ones used in garden spraying. The one I used cost less than $10 at Walmart, Modify the hose end by installing a 1/4 turn ball valve on the hose-end and another piece of hose to insert in radiator filler. Fill the garden pressure bottle with coolant, pump up pressure in bottle with the ball valve closed. Insert hose into radiator filler and slowly open ball valve until a slow flow starts and set the flow so no coolant backups occur. Adjust the flow as necessary while filling the radiator until the system is full.

At the present moment I am debating whether or not I should install a remote thermostat and design a coolant reroute where I could have easy access to it (similar to M-tuned coolant reroute). The second and simpler solution is to install the thermostat in the rear (original FWD location) and just run a.-16an hose and fitting and connect there. I will probably choose the simplest option and move on into completing the exhaust manifold and turbo.

Today I focused in connecting the Air Temp sensor in the intercooler and making all the electrical connections, thanks to MSD universal 2 -Wire connectors kit the install looks OEM and was piece.of cake. More pictures to follow soon.

Project Update. Decided to install some parts I purchased from Rev Limiter and George for my NB Roadster last year. As for the interior I want to keep the car pretty much the same. Please forget the crappy cell phone pictures.

Thanks Grease Monkey, lots of updates coming by the end of this month including GTX turbo upgrade and Race Intake manifold by Gato Performance.

Finally after many months of hardwork and saving and putting my goals behind to pay for priorities I bought my Garrett GTX2867R dual ball bearing turbo today. Pictures are in my albums. Today was a great day.

.. it costs money to go fast ja ja but this is what this build thread is all about. I will pm you Armando's contact info (Gato Performance, you may get a better price since I believe since he already has the dimensions for the BP motor.

That inlet manifold looks pretty cool! What's the performance benefits?

Great question: the NB02 consists of an upper and lower plenum intake manifold with too many holes for EGR valve, butterflies and vacuum lines, for my build I want a simpler set up, the Hydra ECU doesn't need the VITCS or any of that crap.

I have very little time in my life for my build now.


Project Update:

I installed the Gato Performance intake manifold, and everthing related in order to speed up the installation process when I put the engine together. Temporarily removed everything until I get the cyilinder head back from the machine shop.

Purchased the AWR motor mounts, powdercoated the GATO intake manifold and ceramic coated in black the tubular exhaust manifold and downpipe. I have a lot of work on the upcoming weeks. Can't wait to put the engine together.

Thanks my friend, as you can see I am building my dream engine setup which will eventually become reality. It takes time and money to go beyond the average build
I am doing this car with the intention to enjoy itregardless how old is becoming. My next mod and possibly last will be upgrading to a World class gear box with the QuickTime bellhousing and D585 LX or LS3 coils from Flyin Miata .

I wont stop until the car is done but I dont have enough time now with my present employment. It will take some weeks to assemble the engine together. I cant wait to hear the engine start again. Thanks for looking at this thread

Usually when people build their (miata) engines, they leave almost all of the valvetrain and cylinder head stock. Why did you decide to port, polish and upgrade the valvetrain? What's your horsepower target?

Sorry for the multiple questions, it's just that I hear from many sources that it's not worth the effort and money. To be honest, if I was building an engine, and could afford it, I would do what you are doing. =D

Hello Rustat

I used to think rebuilding the cylinder is not worth the effort but after speaking to many of my old skool friends and some experts it is actually quite the opposite. Building the cylinder is where most of the power is made through out the powerband, reaching peak power with the aftermarket camshafts. The rest is a combination of airflow and lighter better quality parts that will improve engine performance to its limit.

I am not set to any power goals yet. I am more focused now on putting everything back together to then worry about tuning. Thanks for following my thread.

Well yesterday was my only day off and I took every minute I could to install the cylinder head. I DID! but the rain delayed me on many ocassions, I couldn't install the motor mounts. I will work hard to complete the installation next Tuesday. My son (who is now 13 years old) helped, that was awesome and cool.

I spent quite a bit cleaning the shortblock I used a nylon wiring wheel I purchased from Sears, then cleaned everything including the ARP hardware. It was a long process, still need to install the timing belt.

EDIT, forget the rusty timing belt pulleys. they will also be replaced too.

So I finally received the custom spark plug wires set I got from Firecore50 from my Build. They are perfect! and after all the great reviews from the Mustang and Chevy community I am eager to compare them against the Magnecor wires from Flyin' Miata. Next job is to wire the LS3 coil packs in sequential mode for the Hydra and powdercoat the brackets in wrinkle black.

The car is already alive, I just don't have time for personal projects due to my present employment.

Well nothing much to update except the car didn't make it to Miatapalooza. In fact, the engine is presently out and rebuilt with brand new pistons that will yield more power and torque overall. After conversation with Luiggi at Olympic Motorsports we estimate the NB will be done sometime in June.

Upgrades includes Stage 2 Boundary Engineering oil pump
Brand New Wiseco pistons
500hp intercooler with v-band aluminum piping
The oil pan oil is now improved with Canton oil dipstick unit to prevent any future oil leaks.

TIME TO UPDATE. My son is 15 years old now and this project still alive. I have been very busy. Together with my dad I purchased a house. It has carport and huge backyard.

As my visions and dreams slowly become reality so is my dream to have this build done. This the short block as of today with the Wiseco high compression pistons, Boundary Engineering oil pump Stage II. Notice I am using Pauter Rods, the block was decked to help seal the cylinder head better with the cometic gasket.

Well guys I looked back at the very first day I created this build thread that was 7/3/2013, time has passed now my son's will be 16 years old on this August 14, 2018 this month. I plan to take the car and do a birthday party at the track with my friends, son's friends and neighbors. The car is in the final stages of the build although I have plans to adapt a badass transmission. Here are pictures of the latest development in preparation for my son's 16 year old b-day. Nice work Eli!:bow: Details on fancy connectors? :shrug: Have seen them before and my understanding is they are essentially mechanical connections but that is all I know.

They are HDI clamps imported from Australia, they have a patent design can withhold 450 pounds of boost and yes the NB is gonna be my sleeper drag car, dyno days videos coming soon.
