    depends.

many see the 1.6 as the best engine that captures the spirit of the car its very rev happy and light feeling however you need to keep an eye out as early 1.6's had some nasty crank wobble.

The 1.8 has more power and torque at the end of the day. Also 1.8's had bigger brakes then the 1.6 so not only do you get a power bump but a little more stopping power.

Now all Na's can really mix and match parts. You can add the bigger brakes to the 1.6 and you can get a lighter flywheel to make the 1.8 more rev happy. So to me it comes down to whats your end goal? If your going to keep it fairly stock drive both and find what fits best. But if you want to build on the stock power life is a little more easy with the 1.8 since you start out with a little more grunt but that's not to say the 1.6 is a lost cause.

I like the wilder cam from the 1.6L, kinda feels like VTEC kicking in at 4500rpm

but if you want to go boosted most will go with the 1.8L

Like Blitzwing stated most all NA parts are interchangable, and upgradable, so the engine size really is not much of a factor. You can always put on a turbo, or drop in a V8 if you want more power.

Or build a 2.1L Stroker motor.
