    Thumbs up Squeaking/squealing noise

I'm getting a squeaking squealing sound that certainly sounds like metal. It gets faster as I drive faster, but can't hear it at high speeds unless another car or concrete barrier etc is next to me.

It just randomly started. At first, it would do it no matter what I did. Now, it will sometimes stop when I brake. Occasionally, it will go away for a few seconds, but come right back.

    Brakes are new all around.

Did the noise start right after the new brakes were installed? Might check the dust shields to make sure they aren't touching the rotors.

It did not start right after the brakes were done.

Does it get worse going around turns? If so, I'd suspect a bad front wheel bearing.

It could be some brake hardware scrubbing the rotor. If you don't properly lube the "ears" on the front pads where they interface with the clips, the clips will slowly work their way towards the rotor and scrape a little. There is a tiny flange on the back of the pad clips to prevent this from happening but it never seems to stay intact for me. If it's a street car I would just re-lube all of the brake hardware and make sure the clips for the pads are not bent or worn out. If you need new ones you can buy a brake hardware kit from auto zone for $10 or so.

When chasing brake noises on Miata, it's important to remember that we have sliding calipers. While they are durable, cheap, functional, and simple, there are also finicky. Every time you have a chance, you need to lube your slider pins. All of those springs and shims that were installed with the OEM pads have a purpose. They sell new ones for a reason.

Did you grease all the hardware while you were in there? I had a warped rear rotor that caused the caliper to move on the sliders. It was a brand new auto zone rotor that just had excessive runout. It squeaked when the brakes were hot but just applying slight brake pressure or a little e-brake stopped it. When I replaced the rotor after 500 miles or so, I discovered the the slider pin had a groove worn in it.

After replacing the rotor and slider, all was well.

My first Miata did something similar when the speedometer cable was going bad.

Calipers were all verified good Monday. Wheel hub replaced today & noise is still there.

It's a metallic squeal/grind though, not like a belt squeal.
