Live in an area that snow is a rare occurrence and hope I can get away with running summer tires year round. That's my snow setup.

I drive my car all year round as I'm not financially endowed enough to have more than one car. And while we may only get one good snow a year that necessitates the appropriate gear, I have some old studded snow tires on some equally old steelies. When it does decide to snow enough to cover the roads you can't pull me out of my car. I can waste a half tank of gas after a few hours of hooning about at 25mph without a second thought. These cars are bloody brilliant in the snow provided the snow's not too deep.

I can't say anything about the Jacksonville area beyond it being a marine kind of town. But overall the east NC area is alright. Things typically move a bit slow compared to most other places. Cost of living is a bit lower just from being in the South, which brings it's own flavor of life. People are generally nice, but they're still people. Traveling to another town (usually around 25 or so miles on average) for this or that is common. I'm not the kind that goes out to bars, etc., so I can't say anything about the night life options. Most places close at 9pm Mon.-Sat. and 5-6pm Sun. if they're even open on Sun.

    Hope that helps some.

I moved to NC from the Midwest in '03. I moved back to NC from California in '12. NC is a pretty good place to live. I lived in Charlotte and now Raleigh. Both are nice cities for different reasons. The eastern areas of NC tend to be more transient because of the military bases and tourist areas. In the late winter, you can spot vacationers from areas north easily. They are the ones driving like bats out of hell, heading south, in cars covered in salt. I believe NC has positioned itself pretty well, post-recession. The areas of business are pretty diverse and international, schooling (college) offers some of the lowest tuition rates in the nation, and the climate is about as far south as you can get yet still experience all four seasons, without moving to someplace rapey. I never found any reason to like Indiana, so I may a slightly biased stance, but NC is pretty nice!

We are still in Autumn, this being the first week of December. We have had a few frosts and couple early freezes. Winter really only lasts about two months. You know those days in the Midwest around the beginning of August wehn it's balls-hot? We have that from about the middle of May through the middle of September, but wetter. If you have tree pollen allergies (I don't), you may not like April. It's essentially "Tree Splooge Month" and pollen will cover everything like a dusting of snow. Turning on your wipers you clear off the pollen from your windshield is pretty common.

Californians can barely drive in rain, let alone snow....so no snow setup here
