Garage One Hundred replica of M2 1001 front bumper

To avoid hijacking another thread, I am starting a new one.

Here's the last post from the other thread:

you are correct. but the gho bumper is made from the original mold, only difference is one piece. the guy who started gho worked for m2 i believe. randy can chime in and school us all though

I have always been wild about this bumper but over the years I've heard mixed things. Everything from terrific to too heavy and cracks easily.

Anyone have any information, informed opinions, or even relatively reliable hearsay?

    Thanks,
    Bruce

BTW, this is a really great forum, IMO.

Phatmiata and I picked up this bumper from GHO a few years back. Like bogaut stated the fascia is designed with mounting of the fogs inside the fog housings themselves. I also have heard that the “full nose” version was designed by previous M2 employees who now work for GHO. It is by no means flimsy construction. It now sits in storage, but I am considering some sort of reinforcement for the bottom after viewing a M2 1001 parts diagrams.

The GHO 1001 bumper is different from the OEM M2-1001 bumper. The M2-1001 bumper is actually an over hang bonded to a cut up standard bumper. Used ones will cost a fortune. The GHO is a one piece whole bumper replica; its very heavy.

    GHO is still in business.

The lights are a separate part; they're Cibies (the same size as Tangos) but with a special bracket. And you can't not buy the lamps, So this bumper will be 105,000 yen plus shipping; $830 or so, probably well over $1000 delivered.

There was a UK owner with this bumper; it ended up developing stress cracks, supposedly due to the weight. MX5roadsters ended up making him a lightweight copy.

roadsternut (SAZ9661) will tell you the GHO full bumpers are junk and made of cheap chopped strand mat fiberglass that's too heavy and needs major reinforcement to withstand gravity or else it'll start falling apart in big chunks.

I'm waiting for a used D-Technique M2-1001 replica front bumper to arrive from Japan. It is supposedly identical to the original M2-1001 setup in that it is a fiberglass lower half-bumper that is affixed to the top half of a cut OEM urethane Roadster/Miata/MX-5 bumper. D-Tech made several M2 replica parts to help the Club M2 guys when original M2 parts were no longer available.

yea roadsternut is just one man though, im sure GHO has made tons of these bumpers that have never had any issues. mine is pretty well used, but no stress cracks or chunks missing. only one crack from a small collision.

That's always what I've thought. They must have made a ton of them over many years. If there was a structural problem with the design or manufacturing, you'd think it would have been caught a long time ago. Of course, that doesn't mean that Roadsternut could't have had a bad one; every manufacturer can turn out a substandard sample now and then.

I checked here and found what Roadsternut posted:

Is this the one where they added the thin horizontal slat (for support) in the "mouth"?

Please let us know what you think of it when it arrives.

No. You're thinking of the D-Cuatro bumper. The D-Technique bumper looks just like the original M2-1001 bumper.

Yes! You are right. I confused the two.

Please do let us know how you like it once it arrives.

    Thanks again.

If anyone wants to buy new-old-stock GHO 1001 lamps covers......They are sitting on my shelf awaiting a long binned bumper.

And trust me, you need the Cibies.

When my GHO bumper started cracking, I actually ended up taking the car over to MX5Roadsters (Paul) in Northern Ireland to get the lightweight replica fitted. All of the GHO bumpers he had (he had received around 10 of them from RS Aizawa) seemed to be identical quality; after mine started cracking, he sent the rest back to Japan. He had also received some RS Aisawa bumpers at the same time; comparing them side by side, it was clear the RSA bumpers were better made.

    S2-Racing also do a 1001 "style" bumper

The M2-1002 replica bumper seemed nice quality when I looked at it.
