    Mazda M2 Incorporated M2-1001, M2-1002, M2-1028, M2-1006, M2-1008

Here is a combination review of a few old articles I found about the M2 Cars, thought you guys would find it interesting.

Founded in November 1991, M2, also known as "Mazda Too" was Mazda's new off-line planning, nichehouse, Research & Development company (back in the early 90's). The M2 Crew employees had noble intentions -- creating nichemobiles derived from Mazda's volume products. Although M2's basic mission involved focusing on the "soft" aspects of vehicle design in an attempt to create more specifically targeted niche variants, the changes to the off-line cars would go well beyond mere cosmetics.

Heading the M2 operation was "Masakatsu Kato", original father of the Miata (Eunos Roadster) in Japan, as well as creator of several Mazda concept vehicles. Kato-san was assisted by Hirotaka Tachibana, development engineer responsible for the superb dynamics of the FC (second-generation RX-7) and the NA Roadster (Miata MX-5). M2-Corp which was based out of Tokyo, M2 was a 100% owned subsidiary of Mazda and it was closed by Mazda in 1995, but not before creating some really sweet vehicles. Mazda kept a similar program going with Mazdaspeed, and then in the late 90's Mazdaspeed was absorbed to Mazda in the subsidiary company in Mazda Auto Tokyo.

M2-1001 "Clubman" Roadster AKA the Cafe Racer (Dec-91) Limited 1/300
M2-CORP released the M2-1001 Roadster in December 1991. It was a Limited Edition Roadster variant that was a short production run of only 300 units, in a special edition Blue/Black Mica Paint, with a base sticker price of $26,000.

Prospective buyers were required to show up in person at M2's Tokyo headquarters to "register" for a "chance" to place an order for this extremely limited Roadster.

Here is a photo of the M2 Incorporated Building in Tokyo, what a grand looking site to see this must have been, sadly no longer owned by M2 or Mazda though. The architecture on this building was just as wild as the cars that came out of here.

This upscale M2-1001 Eunos Roadster was M2's first "turn-key" race ready offering, here is a list of some of the goodies that made it so popular. In addition to the functional front airdam with integrated fog lamps, it came standard with extras like; vintage aero mirrors, 4-point rollbar, Vintage gauge cluster, Fixed Back Bucket Seats, Polished 3-Spoke MOMO Veloce Steering Wheel, stiffer suspension package with M2 Specific codes, Polished aluminum strut brace, upgraded exhaust by HKS Japan, Aftermarket Intake system, a Tuned 1.6L motor with new aggressive pistons, radical camshaft, lightweight flywheel, LSD with Cooling Intake, manual rack steering, manual windows, (A/C was optional) racing pedals, Centerless Console, with matching Shortened Radio Bezel, a retro looking aluminum gas filler cap, a more aggressive wheel & tire package (15x6 panasport rally rims) and a rear spoiler (which became standard for the R-Pkg). The performance changes made to the Roadster would bump the horsepower to 130hp @ 6500rpm, and 109ft/lb of torque @ 5500rpm. Once released it was so popular that people were paying up to $34,000 to get there hands on the M2-1001 Roadster!

    M2-1002 "Vintage" Roadster (Nov-92) Limited 1/300

M2-CORP released it's second Roadster in late 1992, with a sightly different front bumper, it had all the same goodies as the previous 1001 Roadster, but offered a more unique looking interior option, the Ivory Leather interior with wood accents like Brake handle and shifter. And was also limited to 300 units produced. This one did not do as well as the 1001, so Mazda Japan got stuck with some left over interiors. Which later were later installed in the Tokyo Limited, and only 40 of those made it to the streets of Japan.

    M2-1028 "Street Competition" Roadster AKA Clubman-2 (FEB-94) Limited 1/300

M2-CORP released it's third Roadster in early 1994, based on the original "Jinba Ittai" concept made by Toshihiko Hirai. This was the track ready Competition Roadster. (The USA got a simpler version known as the R-Package. ) Offered in Chaste White or Brilliant Black only, this Roadster used the new 1.8L powerplant with upgraded pistons, and camshafts, and other similar goodies as the previous 1001, & 1002. However this Roadster had an output of close to 140hp!! It included 14" Eunos Factory Rims with a unique gunmetal paint with polished lip, this same lighter hollowspoke was found on some of the US-Spec Miatas. Some of the features here were a new set of lightweight side mirrors, MOMO Steering Wheel, Centerless console, Racing seats, racing tow hook, Lightweight Aluminum Shock Tower Brace, a set of front & rear lower lip spoilers, (R-Package) a newly designed (Aluminum) "Duck-Tail" trunklid with integrated spoiler (the M2-1028 trunklid was made from aluminium and weighed only 7.7-lbs. very light weight from original lid 15.5-lbs. ). Similar design used on the NB's. Also came with a 6-point rollcage, but no soft-top (instead, you got a tarp that stretched over the cage). With optional FRP Hardtop with plexiglass rear window for more weight savings coming in at only 19-lbs.

Here are some scans from my M2-1028 Brochure

    M2-1003 "Junior" Roadster

The model 1003 was a simplified and affordable version of the MX5 Roadster named the "Junior" Roadster. Similar to the Austin Healey Sprite of years past, it was put forward as a proposal to Mazda Headquarters Japan, but sadly never released as a production car. They only made 1 of these in a Dark Red Mica Paint with lots of S-Limited aka 93LE red interior bits. The 1003 Roadster was later taken back to M2-Corp HQ and transformed into the M2-1008 Roadster Coupe.

I managed to find this interior shot of the M2-1003 Roadster in a beat up issue of M2 Magazine, as well as the M2-1023 AWD Hatchback.

M2-1006 "CobraSter" V-6 Powered Concept Car

By far the wildest Tachibana creation was the M2-1006 "CobraSter", as it was referred to by Mazda's insiders. This was the Mazda version of the infamous Shelby Cobra of the Sixties, fitted with the Mazda 929's Quad-Camshaft, 24-Valve V6 under the hood. The rear subframe was ditched and instead M2 Engineers used the rear subframe and suspension from the Mazda RX-7 for added strength. The front tires were 225/50-16's, and the tucked under the bulging rear fenders they used 245/45-16's tires.

The intention was to produce a "limited" run of these mini terrors using the 2.5-liter version of the Mazda V-6, and the market reaction was very good, however since there was so many modifications to this car from the standard model Mazda decided to give up on any ideas of putting this car into production.

There was only 2 of these cars ever produced by M2 Incorporated.

    M2-1007 "Sedan" Roadster Concept Car

The Model 1007 was a 4-door sedan version, , this was envisioned to capture the post-MX-5/Miata Market. There was only (1) full sized car produced, and another 1/5 scale version that was produced as a model for review by Mazda.

    M2-1008 "Coupe" Roadster Concept Car

Another one-off project from the M2 design team was their version of "Coupe" derivative of the original theme. This model was designed with a more rigid body, and refined aerodynamics. The exterior of this car was a more radical design than the US-Based California "M-Coupe" which remain more true to the Miata principle. The 1008 had a more "Italianesque" design with its truncated cut-off rear section. There was one one of these produced as a "running" prototype model for presentation.

This was previously the 1003 Junior roadster but that car was transformed into this coupe when M2 dropped the 1003 concept

There was also a US Version of the Coupe called the "M-Coupe" based on the NA Body, as well as a prototype made in Canada called the "F010 Coupe" based off an NA using a modified hatch from the Mazda, either RX-7 or MX-3.

Not sure, from the drawing I have, that this was really a "Roadster sedan". If anything, it had the same shape as a RX8.
