    The Marco Canlas Project

As most of you know, our friend Marco Canlas (jdm slick) passed away on the 8th of May. A group of his friends, with help from a lot of local shop help and donations are going to be building up his car the way that he wanted it. His car and racing was an important part of him, we will keep his memory and legacy alive through his vehicle.

Ownership of the car has been transferred to his sister Kat. She's going to learn stick (this project goes so deep!) and eventually she will be driving it.
Currently we are still in the planning stages, figuring out what he wanted the car to be and what resources we have available, then getting the car put together.
Right now we have two deadlines to hit:

July 18th 2015 - Team Topak Racing Event
    October 3-4th 2015 - Miatas at MRLS

Just for a brief outline of what I think is feasible is to have his vehicle be made presentable for the July event. No major changes needed, just some good old TLC and small maintenance to make the car safely dirveable, possibly a vinyl wrap and detailing for now.

For the MRLS event, we will want to progress much further with the project. Install the parts he had in his room, possible color change with paint (engine bay also), exterior redone, new wheels and tires. Nothing with the engine, transmission or suspension needs to necessarily needs to be changed at this point, but after the MRLS event we can start cranking that out. Plans subject to change depending on what we are able to do.

While working our way in completing what we need done for the first deadline, we will have the ball rolling on the second deadline.
After the project is all said and finished, I think it would be a cool idea to get his car featured in magazines, websites, Speedhunters and we will have a great car and story to tell.

    5/31/15 Update
Yesterday a group of us went to the Canlas residence to discuss more about the project, do a visual inspection on Monica (his NA) and enjoyed some very good BBQ thanks to the amazing Canlas family.
Topak Event July 18th (~7 weeks away)
Jeremy D'Ambrosio will be manning a booth that will feature Marco's car, helmet and gloves as well as stickers and t-shirts that will be for sale.
Matthew Hyatt will be our on-site detailer for the event.
It was decided to get the car registered as operating to elevate logistics and cost with transporting the vehicle. If the vehicle is not ready for driving in time for Topak event it will get transported.
In regards to the MRLS: Kat and her boyfriend Robert will be driving the car with us to experience the route Marco took to go to the events. We're going to see about the possibility of getting a garage / booth space for us and his car.

    During the check we determined:
Car doesn't fire up every time the starter button is pressed (likely starter switch), a few vacuum caps are going to be needed, simple maintenance items (fluids), engine re-tuned (mentioned by Alex Tan the last time Marco had his car at Indotech for track prep), right rear wheel will have to be balanced (found wheel weights stuck to the caliper) and new wheels studs (one cross-threaded, we already have a set of ARP wheel studs Marco had for his car). This is before we do any changing the car in anyway.
As always, if you can please donate to the projects paypal account (marcocanlasproject@gmail.com)!
A big thank you to the Canlas family, Michael Deron Hom, James Dyer, Garrison Angebrandt, Jeramy Rehwald and his daughter, Joseph Acuna, Tommy Huang and Phillip Tran and everyone else that has been helping out!

I believe this started life as a 1994 M Edition, he had quite a mod list on the car:
    15x8 +28 Enkei RPF1-RS

    Pictures from today:

His family made a fatastic cabinet in memorial to him in his room

Hardtop has an aluminum skin showing, is that normal/oem? The seals could also be replaced when/if paint happens

Wheel weights were found on the right rear brake caliper instead of the wheel

Carbing "dogbone" cage. This is either going to be modified or removed for the safety of his sister, while driving on city streets.

Marco's stepdad seems to be the only one that can start the car

He was a huge Chikara/Maruha fan! Tom Matano also signed his dashboard at one of the Laguna Seca events

Which he loved to go to. He wasnt able to make it to the last MRLS event so Chikara ended up gifting him a lot of things!

    Ham inspecting an oil leak

Some typical Marco mods to hold the rear bumper

Spark plugs were new and in good condition except for a bit of oil on the rear-most one

Thanks Randy. I realized I had donated money for his services, but not to this project, so I just sent money as well.

I agree with Phatmiata, it is truly a endeavor that any true enthusiast would be speechless to know would be done in their behalf. It is something that can serve as a remembrance of Marco but still serve a practical purpose for the family. Look forward to the progress!

Hey guys, it's Ham here and I'm the Project Lead for Marco's car. Here are some updates:

So as mentioned before we are working on getting Marco's car ready for the July 18th Team Topak Racing event and the beginning of October for Miatas at MRLS. For Topak we are going to be installing new wheels studs, lug bolts and doing some general maintenance. The goal for MRLS is a new paint job, parts and wheel installation.

Funds will be going toward parts, paint, fees, misc event costs, etc.

    Our current funds are: $820.

    What we are planning are:
    Fluids
    Engine tuning
    Misc. pieces
Paint and body work (Jeep Anvil Gray or Scion Cement Gray)
Garage Vary Front Lip (Urethane) - $190.00
Garage Vary Front Air Deflector and Side Air Deflector (FRP) - $610.00
Vitaloni Sebring Mach Side View Mirrors - $125.00
    Voltex Type 2 Wing 1600mm (FRP) - $1,386.00
    Volk Racing MTE37 15x8 +25 4x100 - $2,000
Front Splitter and Undercover - Kazespec Engineering

If you would like to donate to the project and our cause, please send donations to paypal (as friends / family) to marcocanlasproject@gmail.com

Currently in contact with multiple shops in the SD and LA area for help with the project and they have gratuitously willing to give a hand with shop space, parts and fee reductions.

We also have the organizers of Miatas at MRLS on board to have something special for Marco set up at this years event.

Thank you all for your support and expect to see updates once we get closer to the July event!

A couple of guys went up to the Canlas residence again recently and replaced the wheel studs with ARP ones that Marco had purchased, but never installed. It was much needed, since one of his studs had cross threaded so bad that a lugnut couldn't be put on. The worn out (Home Depot?) endlinks were also replaced all around, thanks to the great guys at 949 Racing donating a complete set!

Our good friend and 949 employee, Sonny

Jeramy Rehwald and James Dyer work hard

Work on the car progresses slowly. There may be some wheels being imported soon.

Matt Hyatt detailed the paint! Except for the A-pillar, which he didn't have time to complete. I'll snap real pictures of the car this weekend at the TOPAK Racers Against Cancer event.

I sent Marco a couple of these stickers in the mail several years ago, he told me he was gonna install it after he had the panel repainted or got a set of GV tails.

Not sure if his family found it? But if you need another one I can send you some freebies no prob, keep up the good work guys.
