BERG hasn’t been getting a ton of attention lately so finally placed an order with Moss for a replacement Robbin’s top in tan canvas. The old vinyl top had started to tear which I’d stitched up as a short term stopgap but was far from being water tight. The morning dew was leading to more moisture in the car than needed and since a 3k oil change was scheduled for Thursday had Integrated do the job at the same time. Love the result which is even more noticeable on a tan top than black. Now just need to leave it up for a couple weeks to help it stretch.

To celebrate another KINOD-ers birthday I brought candles and planned to pick up a couple dozen donuts at Krispy Kreme since we’ve long since lost sight of that tradition (pretty much since we had to relocate away from their parking lot). While waiting in line another KINOD-er who hadn’t been in a while was on her way out carrying a couple boxes with 24 glazed. Glad she saw me as 48 would have been just a bit too ambitious. David didn’t make it so we celebrated without him…

To complete the tradition, had to swing by In N Out for a late night burger after the blast home.

It never ceases to amaze me how consistent and limited people are with their color selection for new cars. While running some errands this weekend, that fact was really emphasized in the underground garage next to my contrasting Mariner paint.

And to close out the weekend, eldest son lent a hand swapping out the hardtop brackets courtesy of CarMakeCorns USA. These absolutely transformed the fitment of the top which made the start to the week all that much better…

We invited my parents down from North of the border to enjoy some better weather and spend some quality time with us and the grandsons. I took the week off since the kids were out of school and it was also pops’ 81st birthday on November 21st which added to all we have to celebrate being thankful for.

Ahead of mom and dad’s arrival decided it was a good time to wash up both the family hauler and the Sunburst while I was at it. That car cleans up so well and it’s always fun to go back to a 100% stock car and enjoy it as they were built. I had to send the stock stereo back to Jeff Anderson due to a circuit board problem but as usual his turnaround timing was very prompt after we got our repair slot locked. Music is pretty essential for driving for both me and Mrs. R so nice to have that sorted.

Benny had his weekly evening bath…

… and Eldest son also took the initiative to clean up Berg so all was well with the Miati.

Mom kindly brought down a couple old license plates from my earliest days living in Canada’s arctic knowing they’d be welcomed mementos to put up in the garage. To this day I still remember what -60C/-76F felt like in Yellowknife. As a wee kid it just was the way it was but probably had a not insignificant influence in my decision not to follow in Dad’s footsteps. He was a mining engineer which dictated the types of locations that were typically most suited to mines and thus where we lived.

Mrs R. decided to plan a trip to Palm Springs for a change of scenery for us and the excuse for a little roadtrip. Eldest son kindly requested if he could drive Berg which was perfect since it meant I wouldn’t be Roadster-less for the desert. I don’t know if it was just me but this car very much looked at home here

It was a great trip but always great to get home. Managed to go for a couple drives and one on one time with both Mom and Dad. We all agreed the seats in Berg would likely be more accommodating than the Type R’s so enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful vista’s from Palos Verdes. I feel so thankful to still have both my parents and to be thousands of miles closer than we were for so many years.

Saturday morning started with dropping off Berg at Integrated since the rivets on the rear hoop of the softtop had come off and needed to be reattached with something stronger. While I was admiring Alex’s 86 AW11 he suggested I take it home and bring it back when he was done with my car. Hard to pass on an opportunity like that especially since I’d never driven one! The car had completely reworked suspension and ITB’s and a straight pipe and sounded incredible with the engine just over the shoulder even if it was lacking in the pick-up and go department. He did happen to mention he was considering selling it but we’re still at the point where I have to get rid of a car to add one so nothing it would beat out.

And Sunday brought about RADwood LA at the Peterson automobile museum…

Another example of “French Racing Blue”

W8 crazy with an insane interior. Actually everything about the Vector is pretty nuts…

    No shortage of AMG 560SEC’s

Amazing how a car can rekindle giddy childhood dreams just being in their presence…

    Putting the wood in RADwood…

    Crazy clean Bronco II

    A stunning Quattro

And a minty NA6 with just over 30k miles

Somehow missed snapping pics of the Delta Integrale, a friends AZ1 and tons and tons more. Such a great time. Used the excuse to invite KINOD-ers around for a BBQ but was too busy hosting even to snap a single pic . It was also too dark when everyone left to catch a snap of the street lined with Miati. Pretty sure the neighbors knew who’s house might be having a get together and taking up all the parking. Hahahaha…

Last weekend youngest son and I made our way to the Staples Center for the annual pilgrimage to the LA Autoshow. It’s never been as significant as Tokyo, Geneva, Detroit or Paris but it’s great to enjoy such an amazing collection of cars in one place and I particularly love seeing the concepts in person…

A lot of carbon on this NSX even if v2 hasn’t entirely captured my imagination like the original did. I can’t help but think that if you took the badge off people would struggle to know who made it. Now it probably doesn’t help that I was a lot younger and more impressionable in 1989 but it was also the same year the Miata was unveiled so maybe its just that there was a lot more car designer magic at that time

The new model 3 did look very pretty in person and even though I understand the rearview cameras and all but that rear visibility has to be pretty horrendous.

There’s also often a smattering of unusual vintage cars that are such a great contrast to everything new…

And the car I really came to see. Porsche did a great job of the pageantry showing off their lineage…

And my favorite view.. really reminds me of what the 996 Carrera 4S looked like with its distinct full width rear light. I was working with Porsche at the time and loved what they were doing so perhaps it harkens back to that but for me the 992 is the prettiest 911 since the 997.

KINOD Xmas was on Friday (unfortunately there are no pictures suitable for this family friendly forum ;) but such a fantastic time with so many great friends. A KINOD regular also had arranged for a Miata cruise from Irvine to San Diego and back but with the holiday season so close I couldn’t afford the time. It would have taken up the most part of the day over a couple hundred miles so I found a way to console myself with a little time in the garage. I haven’t had the top off since I had it painted but had enough to do on the inside it was time to get it in the garage and get it off. The primary goal was to finally get around to removing the B pillar covers to Dremel them out to fit the Beatrush side strikers (done, not documented).

Finally installed the Rokyu Rob rear tow hook. Probably will have to be even more careful on steep drives and speedbumps though who cares.. can’t help but love Rob’s products.

My favorite little badge on the rear that a great friend picked up at Karuizawa this year…

Heartbeat LA’s replacement pulltag for the extinguisher release…

And at that with the top down, one could only hope to find some time to enjoy the winter weather…

Thanks mate. Kinda proud but certainly hugely appreciative of all the inspiration I've gotten along the way. Will never forget uncovering your PitCrew in the rain to get eyes on it in person and the rear fitment check with the Nakamae's! Looks like I may be UK bound end of Jan so will certainly give you some warning in case you're around. All the best for the holidays!!

Just before the break I had a local detailer sort out the fleet – he did a fantastic job of paint correcting and ceramic coating Benny ahead of MRLS but the rest deserved a thorough cleaning that was well beyond my current skills and time. The Miati came out beautifully. Berg hadn’t been particularly cared for atleast in his later years so probably had the biggest transformation both inside and out…

Still, not much can compare to a completely refreshed Sunburst…

Frank took off the dealer installed luggage rack to complete the trunk but unfortunately two of the fasteners on one side broke. Although I’d prefer no rack that will take more time to make right. For now, anyone know a p/n or what could work as a suitable replacement?

Given what it’s used for, Family Hauler was actually the dirtiest made worse by the fact black paint is the least forgiving but that was taken care of…

And the “daily” also was much in need and came out beautifully.

Ahh, so satisfying to having everything looking shiny and sparkling again.
