I miss mine, should have found a way to keep them. But then again they'd be collecting dust.

Still recuperating from another exceptional Laguna Seca weekend. 717 miles between the drive up and back and time on track. Excellent meeting so more MR.Netters in person that I met here first and still blown away RevLimiter and Corifto made the trek. Planning to try and share as much of the weekend as I can after I get a bit more rest and sort through all the pics.

Yes! I'm still recuperating. 2461 miles. Will likely post more when I'm back home this weekend.

So I took Monday off after MRLS which shortened the week ahead of a Saturday flight to the UK only to be on the ground for 48 hours (travel like that is certainly a younger man’s game . That hasn’t given me much of a chance to get to an update but jetlag and the lack of sleep gave me some time back when I least expected it.

Revlimiter and Corifto arrived at my house on Thursday evening after the long drive from New Mexico. It gave us just enough time for a great reunion, a meal and a good catch-up before hitting the hay for our ~5am departure. KINOD leaves from the City of Industry and meets at 4:30 but that’s about 45 miles in the wrong direction so we decided it best to meet the convoy en route. Its essential to be on the road that early to avoid LA rush hour and we made it up to the valley in about 35 minutes (typically closer to 2.5-3 hours if we’d left even at 6. Bonkers for the 25-ish miles). There we picked up Bromungandr at the Coffee Bean in Encino to ensure our quartet was balanced. Two green (ish.. if you can call Montego green) with white stripes and two smurfs. The one with the ITB’s certainly had the better sound. We fueled up ourselves and our cars and were off…

Our next stop was about another 110 miles on to Paula’s Pancake house – I didn’t know Danish pancakes were a thing but they were exceptional. The early start and long drive up the 101 probably helped with our appetites but we were treated with a few wonderfully windy roads heading into town. The rest of the KINDO crew had eaten but were happy to wait for us to have our feed. Then the seventeen of us set out. I contest that there’s almost nothing more spectacular than seeing a fleet of Roadster’s peppering the highway. Our crazy little Miata tribe.

The next traditional stop is Morro bay for a fill-up and some photos. Also at the rock was Tomio Watanabe and part of his crew from Car Make Corns! Free stickers is about all it takes to see a bunch of grown men get all giddy. After a nice visit and some pics we were again on our way

And of course a group Boyfriend pose in honor or Marco…

When we got to Monterey we took over the local car wash to tidy up before pulling into the Parking lot at the hotel for the Moss Miata BBQ, registration and a chance to reconnect with a whole lot of other nutters including Bo and some of the crew from the Pacific North West…

Happy Hour at the Embassy Suites was well and truly taken advantage of and I got to spend some time with Chris (formerly of Moss Miata) who is such an exceptionally wonderful person. We also made a trek to In N out for a late night snack with the crew and new to MR.net Thejohnson.

Then it was time for sleep before the big day ahead.

There’s something about driving to the track as the sun’s rising and making our way up the hill to then be greated by the most amazing view just over the crest. I can’t tell you how exceptionally fortunate I felt being back for more track time at that amazing circuit. We all sat through the race prep, emptied our cars and got ready for our sessions.

The track photographers again managed to get some great pics of Benny. This was when I went out for some tips with a fantastic Aussie driving instructor (“don’t really fit in the seats mate but ah… par for the course”)

Tom Matano was at the Moss both signing hats but unfortunately that was happening right on top of my next session. Corey (big man, massive heart) took my Ignition Model NA that Mrs. R got me for by birthday to have it signed. Coming back with the exhilaration from some laps to see this? Still speechless…

Adam, Corey and I went out for the parade laps and it was fantastic to see Sharka and Bucky out enjoying the track together!

Taking the corkscrew at 5-10mph in the wrong lane does not make for great pics…

Back to more laps in the afternoon

Fantastic to finally get to meet Brian (Speedypenguin) and Jazz in person when we were hanging out at Garage RevLimiter: as well as Druz, his mental Orange V8 and his lovely other half.

After I got back there were a couple pics I saw on FB from a SoCal photographer from Resuka Media that are actually my two favorites. He was kind enough to send me the hi-res versions.

There is another optional Saturday night feast with awards, live music and more celebration that a number of us joined in. Got a chance to meet Iain Johnson who had come over from the UK MX5 club to see how we did things on this side of the pond. Tom was also there and Rick and crew pulled off a surprise celebration because it was his 70th birthday! So amazing Tom chose to spend his birthday with us. I decided that was a fantastic goal so loving the idea of making it to MRLS 2040! Dates were announced for MRLS 2018 so calendar is already marked for the weekend of Sept 15-16.

Tom is such an incredibly kind and humble man who passes on the credit to the community for making the Miata what it has become. Hard to even get him to acknowledge that we couldn’t have done that without him designing it in the first place. He was sat at a table with the President of Miata Philippines along with some of their local Miata club. I couldn’t believe it but Marlonthegreat was there. Have enjoyed pouring through his thread many a time and incredible to be able to talk to him in person!

Fwdtamiya and JonB were an integral part of the weekend and to me are a massive part of the heart and soul of KINOD. I don’t know how it happened but can only guess it had something to do with Jon but we got a call for some pictures with Tom.. to do the boyfriend post.

After the BBQ we ended up back in their room with a ton of people and a not insignificant amount of alcohol which fueled us on for longer than we (I) probably should have.

Sunday morning started with the 17 mile historic drive with six of us making our way through Pebble Beach and its breathtaking vistas.

We then meandered into Carmel for a mid-day feed before heading back to the track.

This was a pick of Adam getting ready for his last laps on Laguna Seca to commemorate crossing the 60k mile milestone in Sharka.

After Corey did his last passengering session in an S1 car we were off to make some tracks. A lot of the KINOD crew waited around so we could convoy back south together. Along the way I took us of course to this small town gas station that only had 87 Octane gas which was no good for most of our tuned crew but atleast it provided a great photo-op (courtesy of Adam).

Our final group stop was a feed at Pea Soup Anderson’s before we drove the rest of the way back. Adam and Corey had the long trek to New Mexico early the next morning but that didn’t stop me from keeping them up late for some final reminiscing.

This is my favorite weekend of the year – sharing in the pilgrimage to our roadster Mecca with friends old and new and celebrating what we love about these mad little cars is such a privilege. I can’t thank each and everyone that was a part of this. Only 329 days until we do it all again!

Beautiful pictures and write up Pete. What an event, I would love to come along next year.

I have always wanted to go to Laguna Seca, and the thought of it full of miatas is even better!

Should be early enough to book the time off work and get a good deal on flights?

Great post, it really captures the emotions of such a weekend and what draws people from all over the world now. I only manage time for 10% of the fun and it's an amazing time.
