This Friday saw another trip to KINOD followed by Son #1’s first time behind the wheel of a Miata (and driving with a stick) since he got his permit. We were in the Sunburst in the Northrop Grumman parking lot and by the end of the session much improvement had been made on feathering the throttle while finding the clutch bite point. Such a great time. Got him to get his camera out for a better pic than I’ve been able to do myself…

Based on word of mouth, have my appointment booked at Hiro’s Auto Repair on July 11th to replace the timing belt. Since I’ve already decided on Xida’s and 949’s SuperMiata Sway Bar kit (which I’m installing myself), want to order the parts directly to reach the lifetime discount (hey, 5% is 5%). Here’s what I have planned, would love to know if anyone has any other suggestions for what I should be looking at…

    • Timing belt, Tensioner Pulley, Idler Puller: Gates Timing Belt kit 90-05 Miata: http://949racing.com/Gates-timing-belt-miata-kit.aspx
    • Water pump & gaskets: http://949racing.com/water-pump-miata.aspx
    • NGK spark plugs and wires: http://949racing.com/NGK-Iridium-plugs-Miata.aspx, http://949racing.com/NGK-spark-plug-wires-Miata.aspx
    • Cam seals, crank seal, valve cover gasket, CAS O ring (949’s timing belt kit doesn’t seem to come with these, any reco’s for where I should get them?)

I’ve also seen a few others say to do the coolant hoses at the same time.. any other opinions or anything else I should be considering?

Oh! By the movie theatre/shopping center? I used to live up the hill from there before we moved east.

I didn't think you youngsters could go late at MJ's and still get up early the next day. Will gladly let you know when I'm double-dipping.

Exactly, most of that side of the lot is getting full these days. You should seriously think about moving back

I loved Cars and Coffee in Irvine. They even let my car in! Plus I was interviewed, on camera by Mazda North America, extolling the virtues of the Miata.

I leave Vegas at midnight. Hit Angels Crest around 3:30. Come out above Burbank and shoot down Interstate 5 to Irvine.
A great time. I have to check out the new location.

Hiro's is a little spendy buy they are very good.

On the seals, I just run a reputable brand. I'm sorry I haven't read the entire thread, so I'm not sure of your mileage, but DO replace your coolant hoses. ALL of them. The throttle body coolant hoses, they are easier to get to if you remove the throttle body, so maybe add a throttle body gasket to your list and a can of throttle body cleaner. Other items to consider would be the fuel filter, coolant cap at the back of the head, vacuum nipple at the rear of the intake manifold, and the PVC. If you get a wild hair, you *could* also replace the rubber fuel lines around the fuel filter and in the engine bay. I would save the ones coming off the fuel pump for when you need to replace it, whenever that may be. Overkill? Perhaps, but that is just part of a "reset" on a 25 y/o car. Peace of mind is hard to buy.

Thanks for all the insights Steven! You should move back just so I could pick you brain in person ;). I really struggled to find any solid references for shops close(ish) to the South Bay except Hiro's came up a few times. Just passed 58k miles but definitely looking for peace of mind so don't mind opting for spendy or the hour drive to get the car there.

Various timing belt/ idler kits don't include the seals and with Arlington gone not sure of the easiest way to get them standalone so trying to piece together the best packages from various suppliers. FM's timing belt kit comes complete with all the seals, rings and gaskets so likely easier than 949 since I can't find a standalone head gasket (https://www.flyinmiata.com/na6-short...-belt-kit.html).

I've also looked at FM's coolant hose kit but still being "mechanically challenged" don't see any reference to throttle body coolant hoses. Am I missing something? https://www.flyinmiata.com/fm-1-6-ho...-belt-kit.html

Will reach out to Hiro's for scope of the other suggestion's you've made.

    Thanks again!

    Cars, Coffee and California...

I don't understand what is included in the FM kit. Rosenthal used to have hose packages by model (1.6, 1.8, etc), but I have not been to their site since the reboot. I am not a fan of worm gear clamps. I will use them if I have to, but prefer to use the constant tension type. The smaller OEM constant tension clamps are frustrating sometimes, though.

I see the main radiator hoses, the heater hoses, but the length of coiled, small diameter hose won't be much fun to work with to replace the OE moulded small hoses.

Thanks again, all this feedback is helping me dig further and last night discovered that Priority Mazda seems to have stepped into the space Rosenthal left. They have a coolant hose kit (http://prioritymazdaparts.com/coolan...kit-1990-1993/) and two timing belt/ water pump kits. One OEM and the other mixed OEM/ Aftermarket (http://prioritymazdaparts.com/timing...wps-wac-90-91/ http://prioritymazdaparts.com/oem-ti...kit-pktbwpk01/). Price difference seems pretty drastic tho'..

Back on KINOD's anniversary, Rad Roadsters has posted a piece on the event with some great pictures. I was stoked to see my car in one of the first pictures and then literally laughed out loud when I read the article... "functional-height Mariner". .. as soon as 949 have their end links back in stock my order will be placed!!

Priority Mazda is ran by Tommy, who from my understanding, is the same person behind ensuring Rosenthal's parts department was so successful. There was several treads on the site who's name we don't mention about the whoe Rosenthal to Priority transition.

I definitely agree with Steven, better safe than sorry. Benny is looking fine as ever, keep it up Pete!

High praise coming from you sir.. thanks Randy . I can't get my head around a PitCrew front on a Mariner but let's say if you were ever thinking of selling your GHO front...

Currently awaiting a shipment from 949 and with Hiro's appointment on Monday and Woolery's tech day coming up am super excited about finally taking care of some of the mechanical things that will help it drive as nice as it looks!

C'mon Martin, it's two and a half weeks away and only 1,538 miles.. sounds like the makings of a perfect summer road trip? To be fair, I do feel spoiled with all the car culture events and opportunities on the left coast although KINOD got permanently kicked out of the location they've been meeting at for ten years until they secure an official permit from the mall manager.

I'm trying to figure out how to finagle my way to Miatapalooza next year.. doesn't make sense to drive or transport my NA there and back. Anyone know of somewhere local to rent an ND?
