Ok Im going through the plans for the car this year. I'm going nuts.

Really thinking of pulling the trigger (when funds arrive) on wider/more aggressive wheels and fender flares.

Going to go with Carbon Miata flares and (most likely) 15x9 +0 wheels. Planning for this is required.

Rear fender cutting and welding will be necessary...I can manage all the cutting, grinding and finish work myself. However, I have no knowledge of welding. Is it possible to cut everything and fold the tabs over and drive the car before getting the rear quarters all welded up?

Gonna have to plan this is far out to get someone over to weld or to drop the car off at a local shop to get welding done.

    Thanks MR!

I think it's doable, but you have to treat/protect the metal, obviously.

It should be fine, but maybe use some tape or a temporary measure to cover the exposed gaps and metal during transport to a shop. It would be a bummer to get some moisture in accidentally, and then trap some when welding the gaps shut.

The shop that I brought my car to cut some pieces that when between the inner and outer metal of the rear fenders, and then welded those in.

Thanks for the advice guys. Car would not see any moisture leading up to having things welded. Would definitely plan so that it would be driven to the shop on dry warm day.

Just making sure their wont be any issues driving the car without that all welded up.

What about rivets? Is welding absolutely necessary?

You could make a piece such that rivets could be used. Maybe a U-shaped piece? The rivets would have to be located lower than where the fender flare holes would go, such that the flares would cover the rivets.

So is the tab welding or riveting process to retain structural integrity? or is it just to hold the inner and outer sheet metal together?

Trying to wrap my head around this whole flare thing.

I got the itch. Like bad. Going winter crazy. Car doesn't come out of the garage until mid April when all road salt is completely gone.

I need Miata things!!! The Miata needs things!! I need to do something Miata related.

Just something small to hold me for a couple months. A small part or a small project would do.

So I ordered revlimiter's retro shift plate. Just enough to get my Miata fix. But pf course that sparked a new plan. A new project. More new parts. Yes!

The plan is to make a new block off panel for the bottom of the tombstone that is flat and has no window switches. I will place the shift plate there to the right of the shift lever.

The console delete is great. I love not having a console. The omgpham tombstone block off kit with window switches has been really nice. But I miss my revlimiter window switches. They're so nice. They match my retro hazard switch. I regret selling the one I had a couple years ago when I went to the console delete. Well i need those switches back in my life. This means I need a console...but I don't want a whole console. I need something to hold the switches. I just need portion of a console to hold the switch. What to do?

Well I had an old console that my father and I (ok 99% my father, 1% me) worked on years ago collecting dust in my garage. Basically we (dad) just chopped off the portion around the shifter and the cup holder and molded & smoothed & painted it so it was just the console with storage, lid / arm rest to hide trunk and gas levers. (Back then my '95 car was manual windows and had trunk lever i wanted to keep out of sight).

Now that I know what Im doing (sort-of) with epoxy, jb weld and plastic, I chopped up that console even further to make a tiny, short, stubby, chaud console. This will hold the window switch, about 4 quarters worth of change, and hide and lock the gas lever. It may even support my elbow, we shall see. But mainly it will house new window switches.

About 8" was removed from the center storage area. Then front and back sections were reattached with quick set epoxy and then gone over with JB weld. Once dry I will sand, sand, bondo, sand, sand, sand, prime, sand, paint.

The lid was cut to match the new opening. Rear hinge will be usable. The front edge of the lid is currently being attached to make it look "OEM". The front edge of lid will need some extra plastic pieces to fill in the center gap. This is due to front being slightly smaller and thinner than the rear.

After a couple hours of work tonight it is coming along how I planned. Which never happens. Cant wait to receive my shift plate and place an order for the window switch.

That's a fun project! Good luck, sir.

edit: Do you think you'll have to extend the window switch's wires?

Ok so tonight was bondo night after work. Bondo-ed over the jb weld on the console sides and front of the lid where i had to mate the front with the back.

This is my first project like this. My normal use of bondo is for custom hot wheels toys and displays. Where no nice finish work or is needed. So ill see how this goes after sanding. The front edge of this console was cut years ago and finished by my father.

Sanding will smooth it down quite a bit. Then Im hoping some truck bed liner sprayed on lightly then covered with some satin black will hide any major imperfections.

This thing is not going to be perfect. The lid may not be perfect when finished so I may cover it with some perforated leather with red stitch to match other interior bits.

Did some sanding today. Its coming out smoother than I thought it would.

Lid definitely needs another thin coat of bondo.

Would have done more sanding with finer grit but my hand sander battery died.

Excited for how this is turning out.
