I noticed a difference on my last Miata which had a shitty $60 brace. Definitely not a necessity. Maybe Ill just order gauge cups lol

Whelp just purchased 2 Revlimiter gauge cups.

I've got a spare crash pad so I can start working on this.

Thanks man. Cant go wrong with anything Adam makes.

The console is sitting on my work bench. Kind of mad at myself for not doing more sanding and getting it perfectly smooth. Really thought the truck bedliner paint would cover the imperfections and I ran out of sanding pads. I need to go back and do more sanding. Then repaint.

Don't give up now. Usually a light coat of paint/primer or something similar helps to bring out the imperfections. That's what I do. Then you have a guideline. Hope to see it finished soon.

    Thanks for the motivation.

Yea I primed it. Really thought any imperfections would disappear with the truck bedliner. I will get to sanding. Not going to quit on it. Needs to hold my Revlimiter switches so it will go on the car.

If anything, I have thought about covering it in leather.

It is small enough that it will sit between the seats where imperfections will be hard to see anyway.

With Rusty on that. For functional stuff go with the other two. The brace is mainly just 'Bling'.

Yea the STB will be pushed back. Bling but i really felt the difference in my last car so I feel that it is a necessity....eventually.

Was able to only spend $85 today on 2 revlimiter gauge cups. Thinking Ill do a clock and a volt meter until I do turbo things and have to add a third gauge.

Update on my mini center console project. Did a couple hours of sanding with a sanding sponge tonight. Pleased with the results. Looks much better. Isnt much left to be hidden by primer and paint.

Then figured before I start priming and painting again, Ill finish the inside. Basically looking to close it up in the small inner compartment in case I do put change of something in there. Also, being finished it will look better. Had to fabricate some puzzle pieces of styrene to extend the bottom so it will meet with the front edge.

Here is how front edge will be.

And this is the bottom that had to be extended to meet the front edge.

It's all in the details. Looking good.

Glad you got those inside lock/pulls! If I had been a bit quicker they would be destined to black anodized.

Got the inside section epoxied up tonight too. Didnt think Id get that far. 5 minute set epoxy is sweet.

This front interior edge may be used (if there's room) for a USB charge port or 12v charging port so tried to make it strong enough with a bunch of epoxy and other pieces of styrene to hold it in.

Used extra chunks of styrene and using epoxy as if it was caulk to seal up any gaps and openings.

Some sanding on the top edge where the lid mates up and some black satin paint and inside is done.

    And a shot from underneath.

Definitely coming out better than I thought it would.

Pick up some filler primer and glazing putty. Filler primer will help fill in sanding scratches and the glazing putty is for filling in the air pockets left by normal body filler. Both shrink a small amount after curing, but the idea is that after a few layers of priming and sanding you can use the glazing putty to fill in any pinholes created from air pockets in regular body filler and primer shrinkage. Then a few more layers of priming and sanding should get you to being ready for paint. Which, an old painter's adage is that once you think you're ready for paint, prime and sand one more time.

95% of good paint is in prep work. Because the reality is that spraying paint is relatively easy, it's all that sanding that's hard work and time consuming.

Thanks for the tips! Glazing putty available at auto stores?
