So over the holidays I put some money down on a few parts for the car, will make for some great New Years Resolutions =)
Found a brand new ITB kit "second hand" off a forum, was able to get it at a very good price so I'm going to try do a budget build. Kit came with the Garage Star/Techno Toy Tuning (T3) adapter plate (black), Toyota AE101 throttle bodies, fuel rail mount, velocity stacks (black), air filters, vacuum block, Toyota TPS and various gaskets.
I've also got myself a Megasquirt DIYPNP ECU for tuning purposes, will assemble this ASAP and get running with the car as is. Will need other parts too like a new fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, wideband O2 sensor and synchrometer to sync the throttle bodies.
ITBs will improve engine response, emit evil noises from the engine bay as well as a small jump in power. My initial goal is to have fun building/tuning the engine, but long term is to gain more power with cams, head port/polish (and maybe other expensive stuff!).

Ordered my ECU from DIYAutoTune.com last week and it arrived today, will start building it ASAP and get it running on the stock engine. Should be able to get some practise tuning the ECU before I get time to install the ITB setup.
The DIYPNP ECU is based on the MegaSquirt Micro Module V2.2, doesn't have as many features as the MS3 but still provides a lot of tuneability and options. Definitely more then enough for a ITB intake setup.

I decided to add some products to sell on my blog, first being the Side Skirt Diffusers. The shipment arrived this morning and I installed them right away =)
Installation was a breeze and only requires the factory bolts as well as some self tapping screws. I took as many photos as I could below, but it's lacking because I was so excited....
Didn't take me long... FedEx guy was still there when I opened the boxes!

Been busy the last week with prototyping a few gear knobs that I hope to produce in the future. With help from a friend, these were turned manually on a lathe and made from stainless steel and Nylon with a steel insert. Threaded specifically for MX-5/Miata models.
Will be testing them over the next couple of weeks to see how they perform. And final production units will be available in stainless steel or Delrin.
I took some photos of the process and will update later with installed photos. Enjoy =)
1. Bored out the centre and drilled a hole for the thread
2. Tapering the bottom half of the gear knob
3. Rounding/smoothing the top of the gear knob
Completed piece with a nice smooth brushed finish.

Machining the steel insert that will be pushed into the nylon body, gives it added strenth.

It gets damn hot inside an MX-5, daammmnnnnn hot! So I picked up some vented front quarter windows. I wanted the KG Works "winged" windows but they're about $1200.... the ones I got are the next best thing =P
Installation was a breeze and they get a lot of air into the car, works much better than I thought. They're made from Lexan and the vents are designed for light plane air ventilation systems.
So first thing was to remove the door card, this will reveal a few bolts that hold the the window frame. Slide the seal out to reveal two screws to completely unbolt the frame.
The window then slides out pretty easily, rubber seal comes off too. I then cleaned it up with some warm water and soup, heaps of gunky build up.
Slide the cleaned up seal onto my vented window, so pretty!
With the help of some rubber lubricant, the vented window slides in very easily.
Then repeat on the driver side, and my JDMST Supporter sticker.

I've been slowly building my MegaSquirt DIYPNP ECU, just wanted to take my time so I don't screw anything up. I have configured to be run on a standard engine with MAF removed, just so I can learn how to tune the basemap. This means standard narrow-band O2 sensor, stock TPS, etc...

This is the ECU harness connector, plugs right into the MX-5 factory harness.
1. Resistors get soldered on first
2. Diodes and other taller components are installed
3. Connectors, ICs and the rest of the parts soldered
I found this to be the hardest part of the build. Heaps of wires that need to be cut to length, stripped and tinned. This pinout will be different for each model of car, pinout can be found on the DIYAutoTune website.

My rear garnish panel was cracked all over and need to be replaced, so I found a second hand one for real cheap. Decided that I wanted it black so had my friend give it a fresh coat of paint, it came out looking brand new =)
Rear lights removed to give access to the rear garnish panel.

Small update tonight... my clutch slave was leaking bad, fluid going everywhere!
To make life easier, I removed the driver side wheel to reach the clutch slave.
From there it's just the matter of removing the two 12mm bolts and the clutch line.
The old rusty leaking clutch slave....

Have just gone through TWO house moves in the past week, so I haven't had much time to post up something new. But here are some photos and a walk through of the Carbon Fibre Side Mirror install.
First step is to insert the arm into the carbon fibre housing, once that's in just tighten it gently at the top using the supplied hardware.
At the base of the arm is a large grub screw, tighten this up to make the ball joint firmer. This can loosen over time, so just re-tighten when necessary. Then attach the base to the mounting plate using the supplied hardware.
To remove the factory mirrors, simply pop off the plastic cover to reveal the screws. Once the mirror is off, give the surface a decent clean before proceeding to the next step.
Make sure to use the rubber gaskets when installing the mounting plate to your door, then simply install the plate using the supplied hardware.

Slow updates lately, have had too much stuff on plus I'm moving houses in a week. But I was able to get the ECU flashed and basemap loaded.
