Cleaning was a success! Had some friends over to help/laugh at me, and eat tacos, drink beer.

Pretty straight forward job, took a few hours, but could have been shorter had I not installed the intake cam caps backwards. No big deal.

Started it up and it was a hellacious noise as the HLAs filled up. I was sure to point the HLA holes towards the tiny galleys in the bores on the head. I had one stubborn one, but I went for a drive and by the time I reached 2 miles, it was fine. I drove the car hard to heat up the oil, parked it to see if the HLAs would drain out and return to their ticking, but they didn't. I can feel the extra power of having the HLAs fully operational. There were 2 or 3 that were pretty soft. All is well.

This was more like tar than oil.

IMO all it takes is a 20K mile oil change and you get this.

Would be surprised if they were not given the gunk that was in them. Oddly, there's something really satisfying to me in de-crapping old parts, more than actually replacing them with brand new ones.

    Is soft good or bad?

I did clean mine and was not satisfied with the result, some where hard and did travel smooth and full length compared to the rest. Guess I will cherry pick from the bag of lifters I got from a friend of mine.

Dang. I found they began to firm up as I bled them. I was feeling for how smoothly they compressed and watched for easily and consistently each released the air. When I started the car, they are ticked really bad for the first few minutes. They quieted down and were fine from then on.
