1994 White, supercharged with retro mods - pricing inquiry

I have to trim the herd down a bit, and the Miata is one of the contenders to be sold

... but to help make that decision, I could use some feedback on a reasonable asking price. I can post pictures if needed, but assume things are in *excellent* condition for it's years - always covered / garaged, original paint, with a few nicks here and there, and well maintained mechanically.

    Here's the specs:

1994 w/factory torsen, ~ 150k miles (actual mileage closer to 125k, but this is the odometer)

Fast Forward Systems Supercharger - recently rebuilt, produces about 8 PSI
    (CARB stickers included)

Racing Beat 4:1 Header-back exhaust, RB dual exhaust outlet

    CARB cert'd high-flow CAT

    Oil cooler

Fat Cat Motorsports Bilsteins on 425F/350R springs
(1st gen: height adjustable / fixed valving)

Racing Beat Front Sway & end links

    Factory brakes w/aftermarket pads

Enkei RPF-1 15's (silver) wrapped in Toyo R1R's (needs new tires)

Lotus Elise PROBAX seats, with custom fabricated seat mounts, very low mounted, direct to the floor (plenty of headroom for a helmet)

Nakame quilted leather center console w/aluminum shifter ring

Soft top delete, Hard top bolted on with brackets & security bolts

Air bag stripped (all components removed)

Momo Prototipo steering wheel (brushed aluminum)

ZOOM Type 1 Radio Console in black (gauges only, no radio installed)

    (5) AEM gauges (boost, AFR, volts, water temp, oil temp)

    KG Works vintage cluster panel

RevLimiter 1-of-a-kind Sterling Prototype gauges - complete custom design for factory cluster, HVAC, and set of 5 AEM gauges - all matching designs.

    Brushed needle caps

    Aluminum window cranks

    Matte Aluminum door handles (locks)

    Leather door pulls

    Hard Dog Roll Bar

    Factory 3-pt Belts

    A/C and power-steering intact

Factory bushings - original, but none cracking

    Factory front air dam

Full records, single owner. Located in SoCal.

Would love to hear pricing suggestions, and fire off any questions I need to think about before setting a price, and/or putting it up for sale. Would prefer not to part stuff out of course, and as per the rules of the forum, I'm not taking offers - I just want honest pricing suggestions.

    Thank you!

Sounds like a really nice car, well taken care of and top of the shelf products used. GLWS

My guess is that without finding the exact right buyer who wants and appreciates everything you’ve done you’ll be disappointed vs parting out. You’ve got thousand’s in parts vs my guess of an $8k ceiling (incl the top worth $1-$1200 alone).

Pictures would help. As in housing, curb appeal has a big impact on pricing.

As a first pass I would suggest the following:
    1. Cruise eBay, Hemmings, AutoTrader, and Craigslist looking for prices of stock Miata's in similar condition and mileage. That is the base price to start your calculations.
    2. Add 25% of the original part prices (no labor) for your additional modifications.
    3. Do not add anything for maintenance. (example, exclude your stock brake work)
    4. Deduct any non-functional equipment or problems at full price to repair it or fix it.

That should get you in the ballpark.
Now compare your calculated price with the asking prices of modified Miata's on the market.
Save all the links to the modified cars for sale.
Refer back to your links to see if they sell.
Just because an equal car is listed at a high price does not equate your car to being worth the same. It is only worth the same as a recent sale of an equivalent car.
Again just like housing, you need to know comparable sales, not listings.

    Adjust your price as required.
Next I would list it on eBay starting at a dollar, but set a reserve price based on your research. See what it bids to. Maybe it exceeds your reserve and the market will establish the price.
If it does not sell, note the price it bid to.

$6500-7500 without seeing pictures. $8500 on the top end.

Take the time to craft an ad in a word processor. Also take time to get a LOT of pictures in GOOD light, maybe even ask someone who has photography experience to do it. Mind the background and shadows. Make a walk around video. No narration necessary, just show everything works, start the engine, pop the hood to show it running, etc.

Point out and photograph all the flaws. If there are nicks or dings, use a coin for scale.

You do all this to keep the punters away and reduce the BS in negotiations, answering the same questions over and over. Anticipate the questions through your descriptions in the ad.

Pay the $100-250 for a full pre-purchase inspection. Compression numbers, report, name of the shop, scan it and include it in the ad.

All this helps get top-dollar. It shows you are serious and don’t mess around.

If you list on an auction, be prepared in advance what you will and won’t do. This means dealing with out of state buyers, payment by wire, additional inspections and working with them to see or transport the car.

    Good luck!

I hated to throw out an actual price without seeing some detailed pictures and did not want to steer you wrong, however if we are making some ballpark assumptions I would agree with KFJ.

It passes CA smog? I don't know how much you should ask, but at the right price you will have no trouble selling it, and probably pretty locally, which is a little less hassle if there are a number of potential buyers prepared to come look at it. Nothing sells like seeing it in person.

I jealous that you have CA legal boost. I hate to think what that cost.

This client bought most of my NA Retro interior except the Nielex power window switch that went to Tim Allen.

    This.

Miata's are infinitely worth more in the sum of their parts than as a whole car, especially with well chosen modifications.

Judging by your avatar, you've got one hell of a setup in there Take LOTS of pictures and post on here, for one, we'd be able to make a more educated guess at the value. I for one would love to shout dibs on a couple of items in that list, sorry, but you'll always peak alot of interest on here if you're willing to part out a car with rare goodies

There's nothing to stop you from doing both; parting out the easy to replace bits and returning the car to a somewhat stock condition to then sell locally, heck, you might get more back that way. If the car is in good condition I can't see it being difficult to sell it for a fair price
You want a good car. I want a good miata.
