The BMWs use a dual sender system. One is on the fuel pump, the other is a stand-alone sender. They are on opposite sides of the tank. One is more expensive than the other ( by a LOT ).

As an owner, you hope and pray the cheaper one dies, because the other requires you to replace the entire fuel pump.

The gauge reads the average of the senders. The low fuel light reads one signal. So, if one sender shat the bed, the light still works, but the gauge does the funky chicken. Yeah. German engineering.

Jesus! (not you) If there's a way to make things more difficult than needed, leave it to BMW to engineer it.

This is 1000% accurate! Coming from a BMW owner! 😂

BMWs are basically a bunch of parts and systems designed by engineers that try to one-up each other.

I couldn't drive up to the UTCC/Hyperfest this year @ VIR, I broke a bone in my foot, so crewing for 949Racing & GoodWin Racing was no-go.

I was fortunate that after the event, Sonny and Manny decided to take a different route back to the west coast. They told me they were heading my way, stopping in Atlanta. I put them up to let them relax and get a good meal. They drove hard to get the rig from LA to VIR (~2400 miles), through inclement weather. The weather at the event was also very poor, and they didn't get much sleep all week.

It was terrific to see them again! I saw Manny about 18 mos ago when I was in LA for business, but I haven't seen Sonny since we left CA in '12. They really enjoyed the respite and hospitality.

They were really happy with the lush, green surroundings. Sonny had never seen lightning bugs before that evening.

    Local BBQ and brews.

Manny and my greyhound, Brett, were inseparable.

The 949Racing rig parked along side my home, it was safer and quieter than some random hotel. I warned my neighbors not to panic about parking/rig. It created some awe in the neighborhood message board.

Precious cargo; Ryan Massey's HyperMiata (LFx-powered track monster) and 949Racing's 400hp "Bullet".

I left them to sleep in the next morning, do some laundry, and decompress. I shot this picture as the sun rose over the rig when I returned from walking the dogs.

The foot is healing, but I wouldn't have been much good to them. So glad I got to see them, I hope they come back next year to compete with "Vegas".

They got a late start the next day, but we had lunch together and they headed out.

    They had no complaints.

Joel is my friend, Miata owner, and 949Racing crew mate. He recommended it and took us around the corner so Sonny and Manny could try some local brews. They liked the vibe around Roswell a lot. I was happy to spend time with them and allow them some time to recharge a bit.

    Minor update:

I put about 350 miles on the car and the p0455 code has not come back yet. So far, it seems the new canister and purge valve has fixed the issue. (touch wood, fingers crossed)

    I did a thing.

Road Atlanta looms large. I knocked out the diff bushings and axle seals alone in a couple of hours this week.

    Everything came apart very well.

The knocking I was getting from the LR under load/unload is gone. Shifting is much improved! The engine tilted back at an alarming angle when I released the PPF, so confirmation the engine mount bushings are toast.

Re-aligning the PPF also cleared up the midpipe hitting the rear subframe while turning hard right, double win!

    Installing new engine mounts tomorrow.

Man, that’s great! What a difference in noise and feel. Let us know if your shifter feels improved as well.

Thanks! I anticipate the rebuilt shifter to come into play after the engine mounts. The NVH will be a little cray, but should soften after some break-in.

Engine mounts are in. Did two cars with a break for tacos in between.

Borrowed an engine crane, which saved us a ton of time, so did an impact wrench and a crap-ton of extensions. The other car had a RB header that was difficult to work around but not impossible.

My engine sits .5-1” higher, more NVH at idle, but nothing horrible. I expect it to smooth out a bit later.

Shifter is effortless and rifle-bolt smooth. Throttle response increase is definitely improved.
