The Atlanta area has a really great Miata community. The people and the cars are pretty special.

Yea, but with the stops I would have to make along the way, it would take me at least couple weeks to get back home.

What would you say the average skill level is at the different run-group levels compared to, say, NASA or SCCA?

Our groups and experience levels compares favorably to SCCA and NASA

Novices (Green Group) are first-timers, or those who have run maybe 3 HPDEs or less (unsubstantiated history). No passengers except instructors. Restricted passing. We do allow Green Drivers to "bump up" to Blue, but only if they are vetted and certified by the lead instructors.

Uninstructed novices (Blue Group) have experience (a traceable history of events with Jzilla or from motorsportreg.com), allowed to have passengers. Prescribed passing zones.

Yellow are experienced drivers (10 or more HPDEs). Sometimes red drivers will slide down into red if it's crowded, or they want to do testing. I will usually run Yellow or Red depending on my duties that day. I will often run in Blue as a sort of "quality control" to make sure rules are being followed, or to watch for drivers who need help.

Red drivers are for very experienced drivers (W2W veterans, HPDE or TT vets). Most of the instructors are in red group, some may be from Yellow Group.

White Group are for staff members who have duties a the event where they may not have a regular time frame to drive. They can go out in any group.

AMP has FIA lighting (digital flagging) along with corner workers at stations. It also has CCTV that covered the ENTIRE track, so Track Control sees everything (and with AJ working Control, he rarely misses anything). AJ is the SCCA Competition Chair for this region. We hire him to oversee Track Control, very professional, excellent guy.

No passing in any groups without a point-by, we run a polite, gentlemanly program. No R-compound tires for novices. All Jzilla instructors are certified by the Motorsport Safety Foundation. This is something we require of our instructors, not all HPDE promoters do this. We also have a staff of professional safety crew on hand for the duration of the event (fire and medical).

I still get butterflies before every trackday, even if I've been on it before. Part of the experience.

I'll tell you what, I'm not looking forward to the drive. Still considering if I should rent a truck and trailer to get down there with some tools. The missus won't be able to come as support car/tool hauler, so...

Yay!!! I’ll make sure to get some good pictures of you! Also, you are more than welcome to ride with me at the track! That offer is extended to anyone actually! Come find me and ask for a ride if you want! I’m not the fastest, but if it’s your first event, you can still get a good feeling of speed and proper lines!

I really suggest anyone going to get a ride with somebody who has done this track a lot, like Danny. They can show you some of the nuances in the line that makes AMP so fun in a Miata.
