Airbag dummy here, need preliminary advice

Yesterday I received the latest Moss Miata sales flyer.
They now carry Cipher leather steering wheels that will retain your OEM airbag center section of your existing steering wheel.
I think this would work well with my "special edition" theme while giving me the steering wheel feel I want.

    So questions, yes questions...
Is it simple and safe to disable the airbag system to change out the steering wheel? I have never fooled around with an airbag system before as all my previous project cars were old. I never had to touch airbag system of my wife's newer vehicles.
If I buy the steering wheel I will probably try to find a factory service manual as well. I just want to get an idea before I purchase the wheel.

I think the common procedure, for any car, is to disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes. I’ve done it before, forgetting to do that but I’m still around. Still, better safe than sorry.

    Disconnect battery. You'll be fine.

Try not to work directly in front of the bag, or wear a grounding tether.

Disconnect the battery, then press the brake pedal to get rid of residual current.
