The increased cargo space in the trunk is nice, too. As always, ymmv!

I get it, but there are some areas I travel to where cellular coverage is minimal. I saw no signs of dry rot on the tire. Sometimes just getting to someplace safer, even if slower, is the better option.

Thanks for the merger, having all info together is quite helpful. I detail my trunk at least twice a year, but the battery compartment has been neglected as it is quite inconvenient to take the battery in and out. I believe the main point of attention should be battery leaks, as well as water leaking into trunk and cubbies; lack of drains makes rust a matter of time.

I also hand washed all the trim (bathtub, soft brush, warm water, Autoglym's interior shampoo) and machine washed the carpet, as there was wine all over them. The fiber board though has become a mess. I let it try and used something called "enzyme and odour eater" which worked wonders; however I am ordering a new one to be laser cut in PVC.

As far as spare goes; I am sure that I cannot fit my regular wheel/tire combo in the trunk. So, if not travelling solo, the spare is not of much use to me really. Thinking of removing it altogether as well.

    NB/NB2 battery tray

    Follow up!

Those Jeep Wrangler floor plugs fit great!

When I installed the plugs, I swept around the edge to make certain the flange sealed. When they are seated, the top of the plug splays outward and it seals as I hoped. I tried pressing upward from underneath and they had a good seal and fit. I’ll monitor their effectiveness over the next few weeks, but I don’t anticipate issues.

Nice find! Do you maybe have a part number for these? My stock ones look just fine, but does not hurt to have spares.

No, I pulled them off Amazon after measuring the specs. They are floor plugs for a 97-06 Jeep TJ Wrangler. I searched using the hole diameter, then looking for matching products with detailed dimensions in the listing.

    4 for $7.50, two-day free shipping.

Follow up on those plugs, make sure the flange underneath seats all the way around. Get under the car to make sure and trace it with a pick or small flat screwdriver if it doesn’t. I followed it up by applying some rubberized undercoating in a healthy dose.

Good luck! I think you have enough metal to save it.

On a positive note: your trunk's rails look better than mine

(the original owner of my car drilled the trunk for a subwoofer and never bothered to fill the holes when they sold the car)

You can find small plugs at a decent-sized NAPA or online for that.

Me? Nah...these are all the size of self-tapping screws.

Plug weld, grind back and apply a thick coat of primer if you can. Else, primer and a dab of silicone would do it.
