    Question New Catback Smells

Last night I replaced the generic and awful catback that came with my car. I just got back from my first drive with it. The Cobalt single tip is a huge improvement - no more rattles and a much improved tone, but, it smells like a burning mixture of plastic and machine oil. I'm assuming this is normal, but this is my first exhaust install. Is it normal for a new exhaust system, specifically one from Cobalt? I tried searching, but didn't find anything definitive.

Yes, that should burn away within a few drives. if you still notice it after a week, it might be worth looking for a leak

Thanks. I'll keep an eye (and a nose) on it.

Typical, but I assume you looked in the pipes to make sure no packing materials were in there?

I can't say I specifically looked for packing materials deep in the pipes, but there was nothing at the ends, and the product was packaged in such a way as to make that scenario unlikely.

I think you guys are right that it will go away after a few drives.

Also check to see if maybe you ran over a plastic bag while driving. I did this to both my cars a week apart. I thought the Miata was burning when I got off the freeway. It took a good week or so to burn off the exhaust system.
