    Fire extinguisher

Onto something I am really afraid of and is rarely discussed; fire, or rather fire suppressants in a car. I like to carry as big of a fire extinguisher I can, just for peace of mind. I also like to have my extinguisher handy (passenger compartment) but properly secured so it cannot fly around and kill you in case of an impact or roll over.

I would like to hear everyone's input on the matter. Type of extinguisher, size, location, mounting. Fire away!

Having made new fuel lines for my build, an engine fire was/is a fear of mine. I use a 5lb Halotron mounted in front of the passenger seat.

It takes a little away from leg space, but my roll bar doesn't really have a good spot to use.

I made my own mount, but there's a few off the shelf options now.

I bought the Flyin Miata fire extinguisher bracket.
    Very nice.

I plan on making my own mounting system, located at the exact same spot, with a quick release system. I think the position is accessible enough without being too invasive for the passenger. What type of extinguishers would you use?

    How we view fire extinguishers:

We have a 5lb system in our race cars. It has 5 nozzles: 2 in the engine bay, 2 aimed at the driver, and one at the fuel tank. It has a sensor in the tank area with an alarm system.

Let's say your car is on fire. Without proper safety gear on, you may have 20 seconds to GFTO of your car before serious harm happens. You should be focused on stopping your car, unbelting, and otherwise preparing to get out. If you can activate a fire system by simply pulling a handle, it is worth it to buy you extra time. If your hands are full with a fire bottle then you are not in control of your car and getting ready to get out.

We also do fire drills. Bring the car to a stop, kill motor, unbelt, remove wheel, activate fire system (pretend) and then climb out. Sometimes without opening the door... and then do it on the passenger side. With your eyes closed. With all of your gear on. Since you may not be able to see through the smoke. Ultimately the fire system is there to buy you time and not to save the car.

We have a handheld bottle too. The thought on it is that we may be first to the scene and may need to put someone else's car out.

Thanks for that post! That's the best description of a proper fire suppression system, but it may be too much for a street car.

And fire drills are utterly useful. We had a standard test each of our drivers had to pass when I was running the university FSAE team. Driver had to hit the e-stop get out of the car (from fully strapped) within 5sec, with a blind ove the helmet visor.

I just ordered an Element E50 for my Miata. A little more expensive, but superior to a traditional bottle in every way. https://elementfire.com/collections/allproducts

I've been very happy with this quick release and location. It's easy to get in and out of the car, out of the way, and doesn't interfere with passenger foot room.

I've spent the last 12 minutes looking over that site. That thing looks fantastic! I may replace my halon bottle with one...

I've just done the order myself. UK stockist https://firesafetystick.com has a sweet deal on pairs of 50s :-)

Thanks for sharing this stuff @Warhammer.

    Hi.

I was about to order from on the uk site.

When I discovered the roll bar mount on the usa site.

Have someone found another reseller in Europe, that maybe got both the fire stick and the roll bar mount?
