    Looking to join the club.

    I posted this in the new member thread with no reply, so I'm posting here as well.
    Hope that's ok.

    I am considering a ND soft top version (I like the new styling) for a early retirement roadster for the wife and I.

    I’ll need a automatic due to my bad knees and the wife’s inability to drive a stick.

    What if any issues should I be aware of in my search?

    Thanks in advance.

    Gary

    Welcome, Gary!

    I think the 2016 had a transmission issue. That’s the only real problem I kinda remember about the ND.

    Was the issue with the Auto or Manual?

    Manual, as far as I know. That's should not be an issue with you. Also I have heard rumors of early model soft tops where the canvas rubbed against the frame, but you will have a wear mark if this happened.

    The ND1s have have transmission issues, but the automatics have been rumored to be quite stout.

    Looking at pre-owned inventory of ND1s here in Atlanta, the upgrades of the ND2s have killed the resale on the ND1s.

    We are 3 years in, so you might expect to see some lease returns selling at very good pricing.

    The NDs are surprisingly quick amongst all the generations. There are few issues I have heard of or seen besides the aforementioned. If an ND2 is your target, these next few months are usually the best time to buy a ‘19 as convertibles lose sales velocity in the colder months.

    Thanks for the info.
    Being new to Miata, does ND1 & ND2 refer to the first & second (2016 & 2017) model year or something else?

    ND2 is a update that came in 2018.

    Thanks, so is the ND2 a 2018 or 2019 model year?

    2019

    The dramatic increase in HP was the main upgrade.

    My only other gripes about the NDs are the lack of room on the passenger side. I’m 6’, 185#, 32” inseam and my knees are jammed into the dashboard. I know there is a sizable foam insulator on the floor of that side that causes this. A lack of a removable hardtop option is another. I have also read the oil temps start to dial back the performance a lot as they rise when the car is pushed hard.

    I also have questions about the available color palette, or lack thereof. You should know the Soul Red has been difficult to match correctly when body work is needed.

    I realize these issues may not be pertinent to your usage, so take them as you will. It really is a lovely car, though. The handling characteristics and personality are more akin to the magic of the first and second generation. The interiors are well appointed for this segment.

    Just for clarification:

    ND1 = 2016-2018
    ND2 = 2019-
