Russell, I'm sad to hear that you are leaving the MX5 world. You were one of a handful of Miata owners/builders that I looked to for inspiration and motivation. Good luck in your next automotive adventure, and please keep in touch.

    -Best regards,

    Jim

Thanks guys, it's been a long time coming but I just have too much money in the car and I don't feel like I'm getting enough out of it. At the moment it's about 2/3 stripped, sold quite a lot of the parts apart from some of the smaller items, and some of the rarer carbon bits that I guess there is only a small market for. Have tried to place a couple of ads on here but I can't seem to get them to show ... they show on Panjo in the Mazda Roadster section, but not on this forum which is weird!

Anyway, an interesting side effect I hadn't thought about was the response I'd get from my kids ... apart from the "if you've sold lots of stuff can I have a PS4" sort of comments, I started to get some comments about how much they missed going out in the 5 ... and when my wife agreed it was a shame not to have one, I did the decent thing I bought a cheap (ish) 5 ... purely for the sake of my children, you understand ... that didn't take long ...

Oh yes, wanted something to blow the cobwebs away so I bought this too ... it came up cheap and should sell for more than I paid in the Spring.

    Shiny isn't it!!

And the 5 ... I spotted it on Facebook and had to jump on a train quick to get it as a few traders were sniffing around, but as I sold the guy a spoiler last year he liked the idea of me buying it off him!

    Decent spec list ...

    1999 Mk2 1.8 with 120,000 miles
    12 months MOT
Project M spoiler (yay!!), wide arches and oem front spoiler
16 x 9 Keskin alloys ... T1R tyres which will have to be ceremonially burned at the stake at the first opportunity
Bilstein shocks w / Koni springs and an exceptional geo setup by Mike Gardiner racing
    Fully polybushed
Mazdaspeed Style / Roll Bar (to be sold I guess)
    Mk2.5 seats
    Replacement hood 3 months ago
Recent brake overhaul (recon calipers, new discs and pads all round)

It drives really nicely, doesn't overheat in horrendous traffic jams, has a working stereo, and I found some free sweets in the door pocket about half way home, bonus!!

Already had several drives out, including to Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb for the last breakfast meet of the year. Jen has threatened me with instant death if I start modifying it, but I'd already made a couple of subtle changes and a new steering wheel was already on order so I'm hoping they don't count ...

The only downside is some rust ... it needs both sills doing and the arches are pretty flakey under the wide ones ... so that'll get done at some point over the winter

That's a nice looking NB. I'm glad you're back. You and Madabout are 2 of the most epic British Miata owners out there.

Thanks guys, James had sent me a couple of messages about "leaving MX5s" as he's tried to escape a few times and kept coming back. I was all set on calling it quite for a bit, but fate stepped in!

In a strange twist of fate, the sale of my shell has fallen through so as at the moment I still own my green Mk1. Pretty well stripped back but the basics is still there. If I get a good offer, it'll still go but you never know ... I might build it back up again as a track car.

So continuing the theme of keeping this car cheap I've bought new wheels, made a new Roll Bar, bought a turbo manifold, Megasquirt, injectors, AFR gauge and wideband and a few other bits ... oh well ...

I guess one possibility is that if my green shell doesn't sell I can always transfer the running gear across and have the green one running with a turbo ...

This just gets weirder and weirder ... I've just been offered the first mx5 I ever owned. It was a cool enough car, a 1990 1.6 in silver. The guy I sold it to added a full cage and was prepping a fully forged engine to take it on track. The project stalled and the parts got sold off, but the shell made it's way to a friend who runs a local motorsport company. He specialises in Rally prep andcwas looking at fitting an evo engine, but he's decided he doesn't have the time so he's offered it to me.

Unsurprisingly I said yes, so fingers crossed I'll collect it next week. I'll most likely sell the Mk2 and put a car together slowly out of parts left over from previous projects.

Just been thinking about this ... and even though it's going completely against what I'd wanted to do I'm going to look into removing the cage from the silver car and putting it into the green car and keeping it.

The big thing about the green car is the dropped floor. It was done mainly because having a cage in an MX5 is not really that safe because of the upper side bar being so close to your head. Dropping the floor puts you about 4 inches lower, so a lot further away from the bar. Part of the reason I didn't mind selling the shell was because I'd never got the money together to put a decent cage in ... so as of Friday I'll have a really nice cage (£1600 when it was done) but in the wrong car. The car will be going straight to my fabricator for a check over, and as long as he's comfortable he can do it easily we'll take it out and put it into my Green car.

So it's at this point I start to regret selling some of the standard bits off my green car ... I need to make up a list, but off the top of my head I need to find ...

    Gearbox
    ECU
    Wheels
    Suspension
    Passenger side wing
    Brakes
    Roof
    Door cards
    Mirrors

    sigh ...

    Russell

I love how you "tried" to leave Russell, but "failed" miserably!

Whatever you end up doing, it sounds like it's going to be rather cool. Good luck, I will be following!

Cheers guys, I'm pretty happy with my failure ... had a look round the Mk1 today and it looks like it's been stored outside for a bit, so there is a bit of surface rust appearing. No big deal, there will be a lot of work going on so sorting that out will be a quick job. Got a few pics of it ...

I'll go round it with my fabricator and we'll make a plan on how to do it ... might look at some better door bars, although the way they have been done will mean I can retain the windows etc.

    Russell.
