Cage is progressing gradually, in some ways it would have been a lot simpler to just make a cage from scratch, but lack of funds means this is the route I have to follow. The cage is loosely in, I need to take them a spare soft top and hard top tomorrow so they can check the fit

I'll post some more pics when I get the car back, my garage currently looks like a disaster area but hopefully that's because I have all the parts I need to build it all back up.

On the "engine decisions" front I'm really tempted by a Rotrex setup I've been offered ... different enough to interest me, and track worthy?

Interesting developments as ever, went over to meet up with a few friends from the UK scene ... Steve and James Cribb, and Dave Burkinshaw (Painter Dave). The Cribbs are in the process of resurrecting (way more in depth than just a renovation!) a Hayashi Roadster ... they have been hoarding parts for years, and are now in the process of putting it together. Anyway, I was just meeting up to swap an exhaust I had for a steering wheel they had, and also hand my Nopro kit to Painter Dave for him to repair the cracks. We met up at Daves, while he was prepping his Pitcrew Roadster for a photo shoot the following day. It wasn't until I was on the way home that I thought what a cool moment it was ... Pitcrew, Hayashi and Nopro within a few feet ... might have to arrange another photoshoot when they are all together!

As usual when a bunch of guys get together, we swapped ideas about our builds, stories about finds (think Dave is winning that one at the moment!) etc. We talked over the Nopro quite a bit, and although I was moving away from the idea of fitting it all to my green car, I think it does make sense. The Nopro kit is very much a track based kit, and my green car is all about the track. So it looks like there will be a BRG Nopro on the road later this year ... still got to decide on the engine though, the guys weren't helping and think Quad Rotary is the way to go ... my wallet disagrees!

To mess with my head even more, I bought another MX5 today. It's a bit of an oddity, having had a Ford Zetec conversion done on it. Odd choice in some ways, but I guess they are a lot more tunable than the MX5 engines ... a set of throttle bodies takes you straight to 170bhp, cams get you to 220 and 250 isn't hard to get without resorting to FI.
My wife was unsure what to get me for Valentines Day, so she's now getting me a Zetec engine ... if I can find one, an ST170.

The same guy was clearing out his spares, so I picked up a set of GSXR1000 throttle bodies on a really nice Ally manifold, made by the Bogg Brothers. No idea what I'll do with it yet, but I couldn't say no!!

Got the car back on Friday, so was able to have a proper look around the cage. A few tweaks are needed but essentially I just need to bolt all the bits stacked at the side of the car on in the right places and I'll be done. Gutting that I'm so busy at the moment it's not likely to happen for some time!

Also got the tyres fitted to my new wheels ... bit too much stretch I think, so I may well have to go bigger.

10" 6ULs. They are ok, but I can't help thinking it's not quite there. Seeing as my arches are pretty big the last thing I need is stretch, so I'll think about it for a bit and go bigger if it makes sense

Nice work on the BRG Russell! That cage looks amazing! I can only imagine how tight she will be. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, there are a few bits that will get changed ... the A pillar gussets were apparently welded by the trainee as they are pretty messy and were meant to be a lot longer but generally I'm happy. It's a huge step forward for me and at last I'm feeling like I'm back in control of the build

No crossbrace from the top of the hoop to the floorpan?

No, the cage is exceptionally well made but relatively basic as it's been lifted out of another car that was not going to be raced. First thing was to get the basic cage in, second thing is to compare it to the current race cages (this was a street / race hybrid design) and maybe add a few bits. I have noticed the race cages used in the US are a lot more complex than the UK ones.
Door bars might get revisited as well, but I want to fit my seats and get the car driving a bit on the street to get a feel for how it works and what's needed next.

The cage looks incomplete, a few triangulated pieces missing for a w2w cage, but I understand the intention. Do the forward points go through the dashboard or down the face of it?

The forward points go through the dash. I'm interested in what you'd add to improve the cage, and why. Pics to show what you mean would be cool too.

Having looked round the cage really closely today it's going back for some more work. Turns out two different guys did bits of the work and I can tell who did which bits ... one set of welds are lovely and even, another are not

The car has gone back to the fabricators for a few bits to be tidied up ... so with an empty garage I obviously turn to the internet and start buying stuff! Managed to buy a few bits and pieces for the build, most importantly some suspension to replace my bust Performance 5 stuff. I managed to track down some Ohlins + K One shocks, which look to be custom valved by a race prep company in Japan. The spring rates are unknown but they are Swift springs so fingers crossed they will be ok.

I found two Bride TTM - C seats as well, to replace mine that went missing last year. They are on the way now, hopefully they arrive about the same time the car gets back.

I briefly flirted with some Corn's (Racing Gear) shocks with Swift springs. Ignored everyone's advice, thinking it was not possible for the springs to be so stiff. The car was rendered virtually undriveable

Did look nice though for the 3 hours they were on.

Do you know what the spring rates were?

The fronts remained a mystery, the rears were 18kg springs. Strange thing is the shocks were taken off a sedate looking and otherwise standard looking black 'n tan VSpec import, not from a gaffer taped track heap like some imports are before some of the specialists put them back to standard for sale.
