    $12 retro shift boot...

Stopped at Advance Auto and purchased a Mr Gasket retro shift boot kit. This kit is almost the perfect square size for the NA. I had to trim the edges of the rubber slightly and I slightly ground the left bottom edge of the trim ring on a grinding wheel(near the emergency brake). I also trimmed the square nub on top flat and unscrewed the torn factory boot.

Is that rubber stiff or does it impede shifting in any way? If not, I will probably go get one tomorrow. My OEM one has been repaired and on it's last legs. I LIKE the look of it!

The rubber is flexible. I took it for a drive and the car shifted fine. You just have to be careful how you position your hand on the shift knob to make sure you don't grab the boot-it really isn't a big deal though.

I went to Advance today and got the Mr. Gasket boot. I installed it like you described and had to grind the stainless a little at the same spot you did. The rest was a piece of cake! I left the old tattered leather boot on there for extra insulation and just slipped this one over it. It does not interfere with the shifting. This mod is great! The little touch of stainless and the modern boot rubber make the console POP! Anyway, I want to thank you for posting this mod!

Nice pick up! Reminds me of my shift boot from my Pathfinder.
