Monster V8 Miata The History & Future of Monster Motorsports

History and Future of the V-8 Powered Monster Miata

Written by: Jason Udy [G+] on July 31

Martin Wilson built the first Monster Miata for a customer who wanted a Mustang 5.0-liter V-8 installed in his Miata. In this Feature Flick, Wilson shares how this project became his primary business and what he has in store for the future Monster Miatas.
Wilson became a fabricator at a young age, saying he was inspired by Carroll Shelby. The Monster Miata follows in Shelby’s footsteps by dropping a Ford small-block V-8 into a tiny roadster. Wilson says the stock Mustang 5.0-liter V-8 engine they use propels the Miata to 60 mph in just under 5.0 seconds and through the quarter-mile in the mid-12 second range. Modified engines can lower those times even more.

Many thought the heavier engine on the front end would ruin the car’s handling, but Wilson found the V-8’s torque allows the car to be steered with the throttle and notes the weight distribution is about 52/48 percent front/rear.

Check out the video below to see what Wilson has planned for future Monster Miatas.

I remember wanting that body kit for a LONG time, then when I could actually afford it they stopped making them. These guys were way ahead of their time (early 1990's), back then the V8 swap was only a dream, but now that the NA body is 20 years old you can pick up a Miata and a used V8 on the cheap and have a supercar for next to nothing!

That car does sound sick.....my car runs on the philosophy of: "If it's too loud, then you're too old!"
