I don't think any had a low fuel light before '02 or '03.

The fuel gauge is pessimistic. When it reads empty, you have around 2 gallons left. The tank holds about 12.5 gallons. Early NAs a little smaller.

I know of people swapping in the NB2 gauge cluster in the NB1 and the low fuel light working but other than that, I agree with what KFJ stated.

Yeah, I usually put about 10-11 gallons in mine when I fill up. Usually wait until it's been on E for a few miles. I may have risked it a time or two as I've gotten just over 12 gallons a few times. I've always wondered if there's room to expand the tank. Would be nice if the Miata had a larger tank.

Just tested the low fuel indicator on the e30 against the onboard computer. It triggers at around 5 litres remaining on the 62 litre tank. I am glad it works!

I always tell people the reason why NA's don't have a low fuel light, is that NA's were made before lights were invented. People normally give me a very strange look after they realize what I just said! lol

NA's can coast a good 3-5 miles when outta gas, usually just enough to slip into a station and fill'er back up.

On a somewhat related note, I have a '90 with the smaller tank. When did the NAs start getting the larger tank?

On a different note, I have a NB White Face gauge cluster installed in my 90 V8 conversion and the low fuel light works. I know because the tank had to be drained to install the new fuel pump. When the new cluster was being wired and diagnostics done on its functions the light came on when the ignition switch was turned on. After fuel was added to the tank the light went out. It never been low enough on fuel to find out it still functions.
