Aluminium Radiator - What would you choose?

    ref. the Brown Death thread.

I want to go the aluminium way. Guess It's wise to upgrade the fans while I'm on it. And the hoses.....
My plans includes forced feeding some place down the road, so I will invest in cooling that can handle about 220 whp.

    All prices in usd

Alternative from ILMotorsport. Total => 578-

    42 or 50mm Core 223-
Radiator Fan Kit, High Pressure 355-

    Alternative GoodWin Total => 655-

    Koyo 55mm 469-
    Mishimoto Fan Kit 186-

Alternative from Flyin Miata Total => 894-

    CrossFlow 525,-
    Stage 2 Fan Kit 369-

    All fan kit are shrouded

In addition I have to pay 25% on these prices, that will increse the differences. And shipping on the IL products will be less since they are available in Europe.

Usually you get what you pays for...but I dont know here....

Either FM crossflow or SuperMiata crossflow.

    http://949racing.com/Crossflow-radiator-miata.aspx
(a link to the 949 since not included above).

Why? You don't want too small a radiator. I replaced my curved 37mm Koyo (curved in Sharka1's freeway accident) with another one. And FM came out with their crossflow not 3 months later. I've kicked myself ever since wishing I'd either bought a thicker one or a crossflow.

With ducting, re-route, good rad cap, and the FM badass fan kit, the little Koyo keeps my turbo engine quite cool. I can even use the A/C on the hottest of days without seeing coolant rise over 96*. But it's still a pretty marginal system due to the small rad.

I can't speak to the efficiency of the FM radiator since I don't own one. However, the fan kit, with my blog review linked above, is fantastic. I assume the rad is the same quality.

The 55mm units don't always play well with aftermarket front swaybars.

I use a 37mm Koyo with stock fans, Maruha cap, no issues at all.

if your in the EU Try Fast5 http://fast5.co.uk/ they sell a nice generic ally rad I belive its the same if not similar to the one MX5Parts sells.

If you want a brand name you can get a few different sized Mishimoto and PWR parts at Moss Europe http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/

Koyos can be found at http://www.srbpower.com/brands/KOYO-RADIATOR.htm but sadly you will be paying quite a bit for it.

I have a thicker Mishimoto for daily use its great. bit of a pig to fit but it works fine with OEM fans

I agree with revlimiter on the recommendation of the crossflow radiators from Flyin' Miata or 949racing. These companies know what they are doing when it comes to selling performance parts for your Miata. I hate spending more than I have to, but I really hate being disappointed. These companies do not disappoint.

I would go with the FM Crossflow and the FM Stage 1 Fan Kit. Unless you are racing your car, the Stage 1 kit should be more than enough and will save you a few $. Contact FM for their recommendation for piece of mind. They will not up-sell you.

Guess I would go for stage 2 fan kit. 35 usd is "urine in the ocean" when the total will be close to 1500 usd.

If I upgrade, which will be soon, I'll put the money down on the TSE radiator. If they can't make their 350+HP track car overheat, that is the one I want.

Mine holds the car stable between 190-200°, but severe hooliganism pushes me into the 200's even with dual fans, proper ducting, and a coolant reroute. Then again my AIT is around 100+ with the temps in the desert here.

Granted my car is around 300 HP so my needs are a little more excessive than most(not a bragging statement, crap just gets hot).

Wait for the 949 crossflow, if you can. I have a Koyo from Goodwin and the overflow tube is always breaking free from the neck; the RS Aizawa boys tell me Koyo (and Mishimoto) aren't held in high regard here in Japan. The FM crossflow unit is fine, and I thought about getting that one, but as usual, Emilio at 949 has taken the basic idea and added some very nice additions such as the taller neck, etc. I would recommend the FM fan kit, as well, with shroud, as it has been very good for my high-comp NA build.

You may be on to something there. I trust Emilio and Trackspeed without question. I am very intrigued by 949's price point. I'm very impressed they were able to keep it so low.

I'll have to see what the consensus of it is with those who have relatively similar builds to mine. If it cools 300hp track cars as well as he states...that is easily $200 less than similar radiators from competitors.

Now to see how long they stay in stock once they come to market!

Huh. I unknowingly linked to the WRONG 949 crossflow rad. They have two on their site. I meant to link to the SuperMiata one.
