From personal experience, it is a very easy to learn manual shifting with the Miata. Just start on level ground (big empty parking lot) and take her slow.

My general advice would be unless the kiddo already has a bit of solo time under their belt, learning to drive a manual transmission as their first car is going to be a bit of an overload. It can vary person to person, but the third pedal and gear shift is a lot to ask of an inexperienced driver. The Miata is one of the easiest car to teach someone, RWD anyway.

My youngest (16) can drive a manual already. His brother (22) can not. So we will be teaching the oldest. He's been driving for 7 years and should pick it up easily enough. I "might" let them use the car.

Just make sure you have a good clutch to start off with.
