[2000 NB, 5spd man] Speedometer acting up in the cold?

So I recently acquired an NB and have noticed that the speedometer does weird things in the sub-freezing temperatures we've had in DFW recently. The needle will be nonresponsive, until about 40mph where it becomes sporadically active (sometimes jumping all over like a seismograph). Once the car gets nice and toasty, it appears to go back to normal. What gives? I've never heard of this happening before.

If I remember correctly it has something to do with a speed sensor on the transmission.

Is there anyway to fix it or is that just gonna be how it is in the cold? (I'm mostly concerned because I pass through a school zone on the way to work and don't want to be pulled over because my speedo is showing zero.)

If you are pulled over, your speedo will be reading 0 regardless. Unless you pull over and keep moving. Use GPS with a spped sensor or download a speedometer app

It is a replaceable part or you can go this route as well http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/86-...or-repair.html. Mine does it when it is raining, I may get around to fixing it one day.

On a side note, did you ever finish the NB retro window switches? The NA ones are incredible. If not, would it be possible to get the faceplate with the hoops, without switches and I can figure out the wiring?
